Pretty easy class. Only assignments are really doing discussion posts once or twice a week. Readings are long but you can really just skim them. Lewis cancelled class or switched to online class often. Midterm grading was nitpicky and took a while to get that grade in. Our final exam still hasn't been graded and I don't expect that grade in for a while LOL. Not that bad of a gen ed, but be prepared for her to expect a discussion during class.

This class is pretty engaging. Dr. Lewis does a fantastic job of providing a wealth of information to make lectures enjoyable and thought-provoking throughout the semester. My section for Fall 2025 mostly took this for credits, so the taboo nature of some of the subjects combined with misaligned motives of taking the class would make discussion segments fall short. Be prepared to write. The content you'll write about can be pretty dense and even if you take shortcuts it'll still take you a bit of time. As of writing this there were weekly discussion posts which weren't too bad but it's challenging given that there's a lot of content to read through. This goes for exams too. You should be fine if you stay on top of the assignments. She does tend to cancel class last minute sometimes which can be a little frustrating if you commute far. Other than that she's super cool!

I also think this class should have been strictly online. She's a cool person but I can't recommend it in good faith despite it being incredibly interesting. I really enjoy learning about these topics but there are ~63 readings/films (in addition to the main textbook) required in the syllabus, and around three/four readings due before every class. The organization of the course online is high-key terrible (three or four different areas to look through for the day's readings/nothing in modules; her "assignments" are undated despite being due at specific times, she doesn't change the syllabus to reflect her cancellations/new schedule), and she hasn't graded things from September even though we're taking the (November) midterm). She expects students to only have 3 other classes. Again, she's really into the subject and knows a lot, but the way everything is formatted makes me want to tear my eyes out. Be prepared to rewrite assignments just because the reading had the exact same name as another one of her links. Respect to anybody who isn't bothered by this, but I wish I had taken chem instead. I have lost more sleep trying to play catch-up for this class than my major.

Class had interesting discussions but she was steady cancelling class last minute due to personal issues after people already arrived.. and one time she just didn't show up and didn't email us until hours later. The class should've completely been on zoom. Also I don't like how a big chunk of the class was US teaching it as "Discussion Leaders", having to prepare a whole presentation and teach the class. Dr. Lewis is nice though but as I said it should've been an online class. This is about Fat Studies (WGSS315) but I wasn't able to put it in.

Don't take her class if ur expecting it to be chill. First of all, she just takes points off assignments with no explanation at all. Also, she has zero consideration for students in her class. Multiple times throughout the semester she cancels class 10 minutes before it starts. Students already walked all the way to class. She doesn't care though. She cancels for some absurd reasons too like "its too hot"? If she is that physically unfit to walk in hot weather, that's concerning. At least send the cancellation email an hour before class. But no, i think she actually wants us to suffer and walk there first because why else would she consistently send out the email 10 minutes before class? Like damn, we're already sitting there. Not to mention she consistently shows up late to class. Multiple times she shows up 5-10 minutes late. Just goes to show how little consideration she has for her students. She is an incredibly nitpicky grader. Takes points off for the smallest details. She needs to understand that many people take this class for gen ed credit. Not everyone wants to go pages in depth about feminism and gender studies. I took this class prepared to put in the effort and work, but she expects too much and takes bunch of points off. Just like another review says, she takes points off because she doesn't "like the answer". Overall, this is one of the worst professors i ever had. please don't take the class if you need your gen ed requirement. take something else because this will just give you a headache. I promise you the good reviews are from those who are passionate about gender studies (which is fine). But if you are an average student who is just looking to fulfill your gen ed, don't take it. At least not with this inconsiderate professor

I love Dr. Lewis! Her course materials are carefully curated, assignments are reasonable, and the class discussions she moderates are always on point. I would definitely take a class taught by her in the future.

Unfair grading. She took off 50% on questions that were worth 50 points because the answer didn't fully answer her questions even though there is no right or wrong answer.

Took WMST400 (Theories of Feminism) in Spring 2019. Dr. Lewis does a great job with this class! It is heavily discussion based - there are readings before every class, and then either students or Dr. Lewis will give a presentation and lead a discussion on the material. We wrote summaries for about a third of the readings along with a final paper analyzing feminist theory behind a current tweet/meme. Strongly recommend this class for anyone looking to learn more about feminism and women's issues across a broad range of topics.
