GVPT201 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 05/19/2025 |
intro pretty chill overall, i didn't like the class as it was more of interfering with my main classes; this class was not one of my required major courses, so take it with a grain of salt also i never attended lecture so that too the class focuses on using R, a programming language, and pushing students to create graph and analyze statistics that would come from survey-work or similar hypotheticals pros: - no required attendance (he even records lectures which was really useful, i watched like 10/24 lectures before I gave up) - two exams, both of which are online and can be taken throughout the day instead of in-class - his lecturing is pretty decent given what content it is; not very interesting content but I think someone said it below, he does his best to make it engaging and understandable - lots of resources posted, including his slides which are not hard to follow - (this semester specifically) there was an extra credit opportunity, i ended up with a 100+ in the class because ofi t - professor seems pretty chill as far as i know/saw him neutral: - i didn't like writing the paper as the final, but definitely better than an exam (for me, it was just time-consuming and got in the way of my studying for my major's classes' exams, so it was more of an interference issue than it was a work issue -- however, there is a clear example to follow with good instructions - if you aren't very good with R/understanding programming language, it can be really tough for you - class itself reminded me of AP stats and I just didn't remember any of it cons: - you do these homeworks in which you complete a set or multiple sets of questions from the textbook ("workbook"), and the textbook itself was not very helpful at all, only in very specific circumstances; overall the homeworks could be really confusing and you might not know what is exactly being asked - unsure if this sounds right but sometimes the grading on the homework is just "this is wrong" even if your code output seemed right and there isn't really a way to check and you'll just have to accept the lost points tbh conclusion/tldr: very annoying class but it was very lenient and online and i give props to the professor for that and his effort for the course/being helpful, basically asynchronous |

This isn't necessarily for the professor but more so the class. Prof Lund is a nice guy but if I could give GVPT201 negative stars I would. First day of class he said to us that he is aware how utterly confusing and difficult this class is and the reputation that it has, and that he was going to make it a little more bearable for us. He then proceeded to not change a thing and use lectures as a time to discuss the textbook preparing us for exams (which were open note btw) and not discuss a lick of the impossible coding homeworks. The T.A.'s in discussion section literally were my saving grace for this class because they actually explained to you what codes you were supposed to use and how to do the homework. Also you are allowed to use ChatGPT for the homeworks so please USE IT IT HELPS SO MUCH, you just have to cite that you used it in your code. Also join the class GroupMe because people ask questions and help each other out so much which was so nice. I have no idea why this class is a GVPT requirement ESPECIALLY if you are on the B.A. track and not the B.S. and I am not sure how the crazy amount of negative reviews saying how awful this class is has not changed anything in how and why they teach it. If you have to take it buckle up but if you don't have to take it do yourself a favor and save yourself the pain by not taking it because this class was awful. |

I can't speak to STAT100, but this class felt like a direct review of AP Stats. The RStudio workbook that contains all homework also provides direct guidance and instruction on answering nearly every question asked. Two take-home exams and one write-up, along with (basically) weekly RStudio coding assignments. Professor Lund did his best to make a boring class engaging by relating to current events and using the room, but you can't get around the fact that this is a standard research methods/stat course. This class is honestly fine, just lean into your TAs. |

GVPT201 will remain as one of the most unnecessary benchmarks for GVPT majors. You are basically forced to teach yourself to code or beg your TA's to explain the content to you, and even then they become confused with the material at time. Professor Lund is a nice person but in the course he was little to no help at all. It is unfair to people who major in something that isn't based around coding and mathematics to be forced to take this course and have to struggle on their on top of everything else. If you can somehow avoid taking this course then find a way to do so or just take it with another professor. University of Maryland seriously needs to explain why GVPT majors who have no passion or interest for empirical research HAVE to take a coding class on top of statistics already being required of us. WOST CLASS IN THE ENTIRE GVPT DEPARTMENT. |

I had Instr. Lund in Spring 2024, during my sophomore year. I took this class as an elective for my gov & politics major. Super interesting class if you like EU & European politics. Super interactive and easy class. I had the class early in the morning and did not attend the class often but still received an A. Easy class & good professor = Amazing class. |
