The class is not hard, but there is a bit of busy work, and Professor Marr is quite a character. He plays his EDM music at the beginning of class and makes sure to tell the class about the song and artist. He also often brags about how he gets paid the "big bucks." Uses curse words as he sees fit. Can sometimes be condescending to students and might mansplain to you what you just said. The exams are not hard per say, he creates a prezi deck that "has everything" that would be on the exam, I wrote everything from that onto my note sheet, yet there were various questions that were just no where to be found! He does have his good moments though and puts in an effort to make the class engaging and relatable for students. He is a nice guy just has some quirks.

This course is so. much. money. For everything. I have never had a professor require us to use so many different systems and pay for them all, almost $200 worth of extra content is just simply unsustainable for students and it isn't fair. All of my other professors use Canvas to submit assignments, but Marr just has to be different and require students to pay out of pocket for another system. Exams are also incredibly inefficient and unnecessarily difficult in regards to the subject, as he provides study guides for both the midterm and the final that are OVER 270 PAGES LONG. Students cannot retain focus for that long, and it is unfair how he does not allow note sheets or any type of assistance during these exams. I understand that the content should be memorized, but memorizing 300 pages worth of notes and key concepts is not okay and should not be normalized. Professor Marr also does not input grades for any of our assignments at all throughout the semester, as we are in the month of December and I still do not know what grades I got on some of my assignments from September. He's a nice guy when you talk to him, but I wouldn't take his class, or any of his classes. Save yourself the time, stress, and honestly, money, if you can.

Prof. Marr should speak more professionally and respectfully while students present. when completing our final presentations he chose to rudely interrupt multiple students while they were mid-sentence within a presentation. this threw them off guard, disrupted their speech, and publicly embarrassed them in front of their peers. the most upsetting part of this entire semester was that Professor Marr harped on the importance of psychological safety in the classroom many times. meaning he emphasized the importance of taking risks and trying new things, often stating it was okay to make educated guesses and that he would "catch us" if a mistake was said. However, when it came time for us to speak in front of the class, he did not continue this precedent. furthermore, the grading he uses does not match up with what is written on the rubrics for the assignment. His exam was not focused on what we had covered in the class, instead it was just questions created by mcgraw hill. thus, many of them were hard to understand and did not focus on what we learned in class. this was incredibly disappointing as I have taken a course with him in the past and truly loved his teaching style. I enjoyed his previous class so much I recommended him to many of my peers, however after this semester I will no longer be doing so.

These reviews don't do him justice. He is engaging and if you pay attention and take notes in class you will do just fine.

This guy is the most repulsing person I have ever had the displeasure of coming across in my life. Has this odd superiority complex, yet is a total weirdo. Puts on awful music at full blast at 9AM that pisses everyone off. Made the class watch a twilight make-out scene in class today and said "oh yeah were watching the whole thing" and tried to twist it as part of the lesson. As if it wasn't already a bit weird and uncomfortable, he had to make it worse. It's so bad I think I am going to just sacrifice my participation grade. I am not alone though I notice more empty seats every day. Apparently he's an ass with grading too, though its too early for me to say personally. Avoid this guy at all costs if you do not want to hate your life for a few hours a week.

Marr was the worst professor I had throughout the entirety of my undergrad at UMD. He was condescending whenever a student answered a question different from how he would’ve answered it, whenever a new student decided to speak up and answer a question, and especially when he was asked a question he should’ve known the answer to but did not. The majority of the class didn’t talk because they were afraid of how Marr would respond. He gave no clarification on the final project and was very sour after each group presented except for one (thankfully, the TA graded everything very fairly for every project/assignment in class). I think the main issue is that he comes off trying to be hip to connect with his students by showing clips during class and playing music at the beginning, but in reality he only cares if you think he’s cool as opposed to actually teaching content and treating students as real people.

Professor Marr is passionate about the material but lacks structure in his class. While he makes the class conversational and engaging, he can get mad or passive-aggressive if you do not answer or give a "dumb" answer. He is very unclear about what he expects from you on the exams, so I would try to meet with the TA beforehand to get more information. The case write-ups aren't too bad, and the TA grades mostly based on completion. Make sure to run your presentation ideas through him because he rejected four of our group's ideas. When we finally had one he loved, researched thoroughly, and had a solid presentation on, he still gave us a 21/25. The group that did a horrible job got a 19/25, so he will just find reasons to take off points. When you ask him for feedback, he gives vague and rude responses. I would highly recommend trying to take a different professor, but if you can only take his class, it isn't the end of the world.

He is pretentious. Very, very pretentious. I can appreciate his attempts to be engaging (and as the other reviews show, it was engaging for many), and very much enjoyed his ability to clap back at times. That being said, he is not a good instructor IMO. Any time someone in our class tried to give him feedback or asked a question about a course, particularly if there was conflicting information on the syllabus versus Canvas, he would not handle it appropriately; he would raise his voice at the entire class and begin yelling how we need to be more responsible and need to refer to the syllabus. I agree that college students should be referring to the syllabus, but if almost half of the class did not do the assignment because of incorrect information that was posted on the announcement he sent out, then he needs to refrain from throwing a temper tantrum and blaming the class (especially when our course content hadn't been following the syllabus because of how behind he was in teaching!). I was also really bothered by the way he does not return essentially any grades until the end of the semester. The little piece of feedback or two you get during the semester isn't helpful either; there were papers where I did not get a 100% but the only feedback I was given from the TA was how great I did on the assignments. If I did not fulfill the expectations, tell me how to improve; just telling me I did good when I didn't isn't helpful whatsoever. Also, when it came to the final presentation, he did not grade according to the expectations on the syllabus (my group still got a good grade, but it was low key very irritating... like a "rules for thee but not for me" situation; if we were confused it was our fault and we should refer to the syllabus but he could completely disregard the syllabus as he saw fit). Ultimately, everything came to a point where most of us assumed he was just averaging one's received peer reviews for assignments and inserting that as a student's score. The biggest thing that bothered me, however, was the structure of this course and his attendance policy. I want to stress that he registered this course with the registrar as HYBRID. Meaning, some classes should be in-person, but there should be some sessions that are completely asynchronous or at least over Zoom. And yet, in-person attendance was required, FOR EVERY SINGLE CLASS. I had an excused absence from the University for one class and at a different point in the semester missed 1-2 classes due to visiting a friend in the hospital following a decision they made in a mental health crisis. I got points off for missing these classes. I know someone who missed a singular class due to a religious holiday and he told that person that they would miss points but it's fine because it wouldn't really affect their grade anyway. There are more stories, but you get the gist. Incredibly discourteous and disingenuous to register a class as hybrid when in-person attendance is required for every class-- even more so in the light of concerning situations. If he had registered this course as an in-person course, that would have been fine-- but he didn't. I gave him two stars because his class is easy enough. Do not buy the course pack (you will never use it; goodbye $40), and I'm not sure if you'll need to buy the iDecision games (goodbye $10, you were glitchy and the professor didn't even bother to verify the validity or usability of this product before requiring all students to buy it). You'll unfortunately have to buy the textbook (goodbye I don't even remember how much $); you don't need to read it but you'll need to do the online assignments on the related software. For exams, just study the slides associated with the concepts on the study guide. I always scored well above average on the exams and was the first or second person to finish (would take me ~20-30 min) and they'd feel like a piece of cake. I recommend this course (it's great intel that *everyone* should know). I do not recommend this instructor. Don't get me wrong-- he has potential. If he improved on just even respecting the individuals taking his course, I think he would receive much higher reviews.

- spends 10 minutes at the beginning discussing irrelevant music - speed runs the lecture slides - gets pissed if you ask questions - way too many tiny assignments to keep track of - around $200 in pay walls (we all don't got it like that Greg) - acts nice but is lowkey a narcissistic A-Hole - vague instructions on writing assignments

Most annoying professor in the business school. He plays terrible music for the first 10-15 minutes of class, lowkey rude, and makes a simple class wayyy more complicated than it needs to be. He takes forever to get his point across, and takes about 3 weeks minimum to respond to any sort of email. He would talk all of class about nothing, get into the actual lecture with 5-10 minutes left, and then yells at us for being behind in the course material. Weird guy, easy A (I did the bare minimum).

Ok so i agree with some of these bad reviews but also with the good ones. to start with the good: - Marr's lectures are VERY entertaining, He is young, energetic, funny, and super knowlegable about the content - He does truly care about the subjects in class, which are actually useful and interesting - I feel that the class has actually helped me and I am learning useful things - I find myself getting envoloped in the class content, and time flies in the class if you actually enjoy the content - thr group project is actually super cool, picking a company and usuing what youve learned to find an innovative fix is super fun and creative! then, the bad: - the grading in this class is soooo unecessarly hard. I LOVE this class and the content, but somehow do bad on wirtten exams even though I lock in for every single lecture and study hard. - marr can get mean sometimes. Multiple times marr has been genuinely pissed off at one thing or another, and taken it out on students. I don't understand why he gets like this. my guess is that he is passionate about the content, and when students arent, it makes him mad. He will also low key make fun of you for giving a "dumb" answer - the weekly discussion posts and case write ups become monotinous, they are meant to invoke learning and creativity, but as soon as you realize no one actually reads the packback discussion posts, and the case write ups are SOOOO long, you just end up chat GPTing them and calling it a day take both of these into consideration, if you dont like the class content, BEWARE, beacuse marr just may not be for you!

Professor Marr is very well equipped to prepare an engaging lecture and keeps the class interested, but his need to be "in" with the students is incredibly odd. He is condescending to specific groups of people and always has an excuse for when he makes a clerical error. He is one of the only 364 teachers that grades so harshly and uses the entire 75 minutes for lecture. The TA sat in the back of the class, but is supposed to mark participation every single time you speak per class, and this ends up being a good chunk of your overall grade. If he does not learn your name in the first few weeks, he will not address you by name and the TA will not count your participation. Also 9 days before our final exam when asked about the exam structure he said he had not written the exam yet and does not know how he plans to. He attributed this to "being incredibly swamped with grading." The TA graded every assignment from group project deliverables, weekly assignments, and exams..... A walking excuse for all of the short comings he has no care to improve. Lastly, during the course he brought up how much money he makes multiple times.

He takes forever to respond to emails and he takes forever to release grades. He is very disorganized and bad with time management. He grades the big assignments harshly and makes it difficult for no reason to get a good grade in his class. He is very condescending and annoying. He tries too hard to seem cool and young but it does make it easier to pay attention to his lecture.

Best professor I've ever had. He was so nice, caring, and funny and really explained the material well. The lectures were engaging and easy to understand and the exams were directly related to them. He was super easy to talk to and the assignments were graded fairly. I highly recommend having him as a professor.

Pros: Very funny and witty. Knows how to keep a class engaged. Cons: Inability to update grades throughout the semester, when asked for help his go to repsonse is something along the lines of "look at the syllabus" or "its probably somewhere on the rubric" i.e he is not very helpful is grasping abetter understanding of the assignments. To me, it seemed like Smith School needed someone to teach this class, so they told him to. He loves to discuss his 120K annual salary.

Do not take this class. He's a nice guy but his structure made this class intolerable. Exams are based off a textbook completely different from the one in the syllabus. Took forever to grade assignments, and provided almost no feedback on the major group project. Doesn't matter if there are cool examples in class/music, the way this course was organized sucked.

THE WORST PROFESSOR I'VE HAD IN SMITH. Marr's class makes a relatively easy course much more difficult than it needs to be, filling it with statistical data that we talk about for 2 seconds and then referring to it on an exam, talking about music, and watching long movie clips and trying to relate it to the class. Marr is also not very responsive at the end of the semester and seems to pull grades out of his ass. Avoid him at all costs if you want to keep your GPA from taking a hit from a BS smith course.

This course consumed most of my weekly schedule. It involves tedious and irrelevant busy work tasks. Attendance and participation carry substantial weight, and the workload comprises numerous assignments and projects. We were tasked with writing papers, extensive group projects, exams, and daily hours of assignments, even on Thanksgiving. I wouldn't suggest it to anyone aiming for an effortless 'A'. Disregard reviews rating it above 2 stars, as they are not truthful. While the instructor might come off as kind and understanding, he talks down to his students and acts as if we are in elementary school.

I would not advise taking his class. His lectures are all over the place and really don't teach you anything. He has exams on a bunch of random things that he has "taught" and gives you a study guide that's not helpful at all. He also teaches based off of his opinion, which I thought was extremely unprofessional. Attendance is also important even though you don't do anything of value in his classes.

This class took up the majority of my time during the week. He has you do unnecessary busy work assignments that are boring and no one cares about. Will take attendance, exams are not open note/are not easy, class is mandatory and participation is weighted heavily, and will give you a ton of assignments/projects. We had to write papers, large group projects, exams, and hours worth of assignments every day (including thanksgiving). Wouldnt recommend to anyone looking for an easy A. Dont listen to any review above a 2 star because its not accurate. Sure hes a nice guy and outgoing, but the class just sucks.

Saw that this review was super off so I had to write one. Specifically took another one of his classes after my first experience, above everything else he cares for his students. Makes sure everyone can share, plays music and videos, learns every student's name by the end of the semester, and just actually has energy in class. You can tell he loves to teach and that makes it a lot easier to learn.

I liked Professor Marr. He's very open minded and different from other Professor's. He plays music for the first 5ish min of class and breaks down his new favorite songs, its pretty cool. He also integrates many Youtube videos and relatable examples into the course content, he is also pretty engaging. I liked him as a Professor more than the class itself.

He is an awful professor. The quizzes are nothing like the exams, the quizzes you can read the entire chapter and think you understand and still fail the quizzes. The exams are all application when he does not speak about application at all during the course. He is an awful professor and is very unapproachable. If you can avoid taking this class, do so.
