RUN!! Take this class any other semester when he isnt teaching. He reads directly from the book and gives fair quizzes and hw, but when it comes to his exams, it is hell. Even though the exams are open notes, the questions are very complicated and sometimes covers topics that were not taught. He doesnt curve which causes the class average to be really low. Our midterms had an average of 50% which was too low. 17 people were in this class at the beginning of the semester and by the 2nd midterm, only 10. He gives the worst exams and his lectures are useful only for what he writes on the blackboard. He often covers materials which are not mentioned anywhere in the textbook. Writing his exams was the most difficult thing I have ever face, compared to his exams, MATH 410 is a joke. Take any other professor but him.

One of the worst professor you can take, particularly for MATH462. You will have difficulty studying with his answer sheets, since either, most have typos or the wrong way to approach a problem. No need to go to his lectures, he just iterates what is said in the book, and explains it in a much difficult way then the book would. Just as reading the book, is like going to his lectures, you barely learn much about PDE. I suggest you watch videos on youtube, and get a different book that has more examples and better explanations if you have to take this course.

Professor Nochetto is not really the most exciting professor. He basically reads out of the book and assigns hw from the end of the chapter. Still, You will probably need help frequently and depending on his mood he can either be a complete jackass or very patient. For grading there were 3 tests, hw every week, and a final. Overall I would recommend this class if you are an engineer and have learned some of the concepts that are covered. Waves, Heat transfer, and other concepts from physics or transport process classes are covered. So if you already know the concepts its actually pretty interesting to see the math behind it. If you are just a math major, the math theory is pretty simple but picturing the concepts might be a little challenging. The only reason I got a B was because I didn't study and bombed the final to drop my grade. So as long as you make good decisions you should get a good grade.
