Honestly, I do not understand why Dr. Sahinoglu has such bad reviews. She is very kind and genuinely wants her students to succeed in the class. I found her lectures to be very thorough and informative. She usually explained the concept at the beginning of the class and then walked through several examples to make sure we knew how to approach the HW. This class required the knowledge of calculus, but Dr. Sahinoglu reviewed all the concepts we needed and added a “calc box” to her notes. Toward the end of the class, she covered some topics from STAT401 (the next course in the series). This proved very helpful for me when I took 401 the next semester. The homework assignments were short and taken directly from the textbook (good textbook btw), which I liked as it gave students a lot of flexibility. Her exams were fair, and she had a review session before each exam. Unfortunately, the class administration was not great. There was a system in place where you had to hand in the HW during your discussion IN PERSON every week, which forced you to attend every single discussion. The discussions were proof-based and not at all helpful in understanding the concepts. The HWs were also given out in the middle of the week, and you basically had 2-3 days to complete them. The Professor was also vague in terms of what would be included in the exams, leaving everyone second-guessing what they should study for. There were also not a lot of practice exams available with answer keys, which were usually convoluted, and some did not have answers at all. Despite the administrative shortcomings, I would recommend taking STAT400 with Dr. Sahinoglu.

It's honestly astounding how terrible she is at teaching. Each lecture is devastatingly worse than the last. Not sure how she manages it. She is also very disorganized, canvas files are really disorganized and poorly named so you don't know what anything is without clicking on it. Luckily, my TA was amazing and went over a whole week's worth of material in under an hour and cranked through enough examples for me to have a good understanding.

I personally really enjoyed the class and thought her accent was completely understandable. Very down to earth and willing to sit down with you during office hours to help walk you through the material. Class does require investing time on your own to make sure you actually understand what’s going on, but it’s a math class after all. I would say if you need or want to take this class be prepared to actually commit to learning the material, go to her office hours, and understand its a four credit class for a reason (even if the homework isn’t as bad).

TL;DR : If you can self study well, take this class. Pros: - Her homeworks, quizzes, and exams are fairly easy and close to what gets covered in lecture and in the textbook. If you can do the practice problems in the textbook and do the practice exams she gives you, you'll be set for the exams. - Most of the TA's are really kind and will help you with whatever questions you have - She's genuinely a kinda person and likes to joke around in class, she's a pretty chill person too. - Her MATLAB projects are reasonable, and you can work with a partner for all of the projects. Cons: - Her handwriting isn't the best, and her lectures can feel scattered a lot of the time, so you're better off going to another MATH240 lecture or just reading the textbook. - She does have a slight accent, so if you're used to listening to accents, then you'll be fine. ----------------------------- Pro tip: 3Blue1Brown's youtube playlist on Linear Algebra helped SO MUCH. I can't put into words how much those videos helped visualize things for me. Definitely watch his videos while your taking this course

She was a solid teacher and a very nice person. At times, she went very fast and would just show us her prewritten notes, but she only did this for a few lectures. Tests are annoying because you only have 50 mins to do them, but she was nice to help us review for them. My TA, Shin Song, did a great job preparing us for exams with practice. However, professor needs to maintain better communication with her TAs because my TA was often unaware about changes made by the professor. All in all, I was worried coming in to this class because of her reviews but she's actually a pretty good professor.

Sweet and funny person, and her accent isn’t an issue, but her lectures are very disorganized. After the first lecture, I literally decided to self-study for the rest of the semester on top of going to lecture because I knew that was the only way I could learn. Not much of a workload, but my self-studying made up for it. There are weekly quizzes that are online and you have two attempts. They were pretty fair. There were 3 exams and 4 MATLABS. The exams were definitely harder than examples we did in class and the quizzes but they made me feel prepared for the final. The MATLABS were easy, though I would appreciate having more than one week to do them.

First off the workload wasn’t too bad. There is weekly homework and canvas quizzes, and three big tests. The grading is fair, not as generous with partial credit as I would have liked but nothing insane. One annoying thing is that homework is due on paper in discussion, so discussion attendance is basically mandatory. As far as the professor goes, she is really nice and most of the reviews here are wayyyy too low. Dr. Sahinoglu is a pretty good teacher and definitely cares about her students. For example she will hold extra office hours before tests and is always happy to answer questions. Her lectures are a bit boring but are understandable if you pay attention. The best part is that the curve is VERY generous. You only need around a 50% to pass with a C- which saved me. As long as you don’t get behind and keep up with homework/quizzes you’ll be fine. Dr. Sahinoglu is really nice, don’t be scared off by these reviews.

Look, she isn't perfect. I do agree that she can have a hard time explaining topics. I actually think that the way she explains things is great, but it feels like she only knows that one way of explaining any given topic, which is a problem if you do not understand the first time. A lot of people slammed her for being really bad and having terrible English but at least for MATH240 she was actually pretty good. She's nice, has a good sense of humor, and her grading is very generous. MATLABs were extremely easy, they held you hand through the whole thing so don't worry if you "don't know how to code". Weekly quizzes (but they're online at home) and weekly homework, but neither are super terrible as long as you took notes/get help from TAs. Lecture material is somewhat similar to what will be on your exams, and discussion is pretty helpful too, but I'd say try not to get caught up in the weird vocabulary, just learn as much of the theory as you can because half the exam is True/False or short justification based on the theory. The actual computation is so much easier than any calc class you will/have already taken. She also curves like 20% or something. I got super lazy and stopped trying and ended with a 65% and still got a B- for my final grade. Basically, if you don't get super lazy and try to put in a little effort outside of lecture, you're chillin.

Hatice is a very kind lecturer and really cares about her students. She also gives a very generous curve and distribution when it comes to exams and finals. However, I feel that she explains material at a very high level and for most of the semester I was teaching myself and not getting much from the lectures. Hatice makes herself very available for office hours. I recommend attending as much as you can and get a very solid understanding on theorems and definitions, as she will expect that you know them when explaining things to you. Her exams can be pretty rough as well but most if not all the questions are from the textbook and the curve makes up for it. TLDR: Class had a low workload, with some improvements to be made in her explanations, but pretty good for her first time teaching math 240. She also gave us baklava on the last day of lecture. The class was very by the book, but in that respect she still did well. I had no problems understanding her even with her accent. She sometimes had to clarify her handwriting or had to reexplain variables because she used no vector notation, but it was pretty minor. She acknowledged that people had complained of her going too fast so she really slowed it down when doing examples. She could improve on her explanations; Some topics were taught better than others, although my TA covered many blindspots (shout out to Ryan Chen). Although in fairness, the ones she didn't do as well on were less important in the exams. Maybe prepare to go to discussion or ready the textbook to supplement the lecture if you're not confident in the class, but it was not bad. Homework was very low, and the weekly quizzes were not bad and you had 2 tries.

I don't think she's terrible, but there are definitely some improvements that she can make. I'll start off with the positives. she's a very nice person and wants the students in her class to get an A. She will do homework problems in class and her grading is not so harsh. In terms of negatives, I think she can be disorganized and does not always post solutions to homework or the written notes. Her explanations for concepts are nothing crazy, but they get the job done i guess. However, I do think her homeworks are great review for tests, since the tests are just like the hw. Overall, if u put some effort into the class, you will be fine.

She's a sweet, caring professor with a bit of an accent, and she posts all her notes from previous semesters if you want to review. Not the best, but also not the worst. I agree with the other reviews here saying that it's difficult to understand much if you aren't in the front few rows, but she gives people time to copy her notes down (she projects a piece of paper onto the board, occasionally using the chalkboard to add important notes/annotate). That being said, I honestly found the textbook more helpful than lectures for MATH240: oftentimes it felt like she couldn't explain stuff people were having trouble understanding in different ways. That being said, in terms of grading I have few complaints. Weekly quizzes which are pretty easy, weekly homework assignments that pertain to 3-5 textbook problems, and tests which, as others have mentioned, are easier than the practices provided on ELMS. I did not find this class very difficult.

While not the worst teacher in the world, I can definitely get why people were frustrated with her in the past. Lectures can be disorganized, she sometimes spends entire lectures on topics she'll say will only take half, and makes content directly taken from the textbook feel more confusing than it should be. TAs were very lenient on grading homework though and matlabs though, however for exams they seemed to have an "all or nothing" approach when it came to partial credit, which became very frustrating at times. If you do have to take Hatice or in general are struggling with linear algebra, I highly recommend watching Kimberly Brehm's and 3Blue1Brown's youtube series on the subject. Not the best teacher I've had, but probably doesn't deserve as low a rating as she has on here. For Math240, she gave three exams and a final, each worth 20% of the grade. Exams were almost always easier than the practice sets she posted beforehand, and were generally straightforward. 8% of the grade was quizzes, but they were online and she allowed two attempts on each. MATLAB projects weren't particularly difficult and also made up 8% of the grade. Homework was worth 4% of the grade and she only assigned a few problems a week, usually no more than an hour of work. Since this was her first time teaching 240 I'm cutting her some slack, but she wasn't very good at explaining the content and didn't provide much better explanation than the textbook did. It's possible she's just not very good at teaching, but I'd expect she improves as she gets more experience teaching this class. She is very kind and accommodating, and it was nice that she didn't assign a crazy amount of work outside of class. This class in general isn't the most difficult when it comes to math, so even if she is the worst professor for the class, getting the grade you want is still very doable.

Professor Sahinoglu knows the material well and has a friendly personality. She does have a thick accent but it is still straightforward to understand what she is saying. That will hardly be the greatest challenge if you take STAT400 with her. The problem is that she is a good mathematician but an awful teacher. Lectures are very confusing and easily over half of her notes seem to have little to nothing to do with the material you'll need to know for quizzes and exams. She wastes time rambling about things that don't matter and get easily distracted. You will mostly be learning the material from the textbook and any useful outside sources you find. Her study recommendations for exams are often misleading and some of it never even gets tested on - or worse, you get tested on something that was never thoroughly explained in lecture or wasn't recommended for study. All of this results in rock bottom means scores for exams, forcing people who aren't wizards to pray for the grade curve to be in their favor. I do not recommend you take STAT400 with Professor Sahinoglu, unless you're already well versed at probability/statistics or want to gamble on surfing the curve. She's not great but I think she gets an overly harsh rep. In the first three units she is decent, but in the last it kind of feels like she drops the ball and doesn't explain the taylor series stuff well at all (mostly relies on textbook ie proof based explanations, which in theory is helpful but in reality is exceptionally difficult to understand, and she doesn't really contextualize it for what a normal college student could grasp). This becomes really bad due to her tendency to mismanage class time and do all the complicated stuff in the last 10-15 minutes. HOWEVER, she is very very nice AND her mismanagement of class time is because she answers questions VERY thoroughly (this is nice but can be problematic because some kids in the class clearly havent taken calc in 3 years and are behind, and i wish her answer would have just been "go to my office hours" and then continue with her lecture, but instead she really tries to help them by re-explaining calc 1 concepts; again, kind of her, but problematic bc we run out of time for the actual class content) ALSO, her class is literally graded on a curve, which is pretty redeeming. Not a great teacher, but like, if everyone is confused then everyone is on an equal playing field, and its not like everyone will just get a B. ALSO, she gives way more time for homework than all other professors, like, instead of making it due the night of the lecture she gives you the entire next day as well, which is nice because of the flexibility. IN SUMMARY, you can coast through the first two units, third she teaches well enough but you need to practice, and for the fourth i would look to khan academy or something similar. She's a really nice professor, with pretty easy exams (not technically relevant bc graded on a curve) BUT it means students who are struggling a bit can still do well, and I think she gets a disproportionately bad rep because when she gets really bad is RIGHT AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER, which means that people remember that when writing their reviews and nothing else.

She is nice but is not the best professor in terms of teaching. Her lectures are boring. You will probably have to learn the material on your own. Her exams are sometimes on SAS and sometimes completely on paper. She releases homework on Friday morning and makes it due Saturday night. She does not give hw extension. The class itself is easy but due to the disorganized lectures, you might find yourself confused. Make friends and work on the projects together. Technically, the hw should not take more than 2 hours. But if you don't put some effort into learning on your own you might find yourself struggling a bit in the beginning. She only helps with hw during the class or in office hours. She does not respond to hw questions via email. There is also a group project at the end where you have to prepare a powerpoint and present to the class. I'll say this flat, she isn't a good professor but has fairly simple exams when compared to other professors. Her grading is based off of class rank (the top 30% get As, 30%-70% get Bs, and below 70% get C or lower). Also, the TA's will carry you throughout the semester and I would recommend skipping the lectures since she just rambles on about useless information and only covers things in the last couple of minutes of class. Personally, I think she is the best professor for calc 2 only because she drops some of the lowest hws and quizzes (they are given weakly) and the exams aren't too difficult (averages were around 75% for first 2 and 65% for last 2).

Hands down the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Lectures are 50 minutes of nonsensical rambling and incomprehensible scribbles on the chalkboard. Wish my TA taught the class ngl. Nice lady but man I did not learn a single thing from her.

Please avoid her if you can. I'm only getting an A- because I have previous experience with some of the material. Hatice is often incomprehensible and awful at doing practice problems on the whiteboard. My TA does a much better job at teaching, and even my TA acknowledges that Hatice is an incredibly incompetent professor.

THIS TEACHER IS THE WORST FOR MATH141 DO NOT TAKE HER. Ok so let me start out by saying that the lectures did not help me understand any of the material AT ALL. My TA, who held discussions on two of the days did a superb job of explaining topics to me, however it was not enough. The lectures were just a waste of time and I would write notes that would not make sense to me at all. If you are trying to take this course, I highly advise not taking this teacher.

Absolutely horrendous professor. STAT430 is supposed to be an easy A and straightforward, but her lectures are convoluted, homework assignments are poorly written and vague. If you try to clarify questions, she will simply say just read the question. Had her because the original professor got replaced by her. Avoid her at all costs.

If you have ADHD/ADD like myself please for the love of god do anything you can to not take this class. the notes she writes on the board during lectures are so disorganized, they just look like the kind of work youd do for a homework problem where work isnt required to be turned in. because of this if you daze out or get distracted for even a moment you cant figure out whats happening at all by looking at the board. i tried so hard to pay attention in her class, and im even medicated, but its so frustrating when i daze out for 30 seconds and look back and i cant even tell what order she did her math work in. be prepared to completely self-teach any concepts if youre not good at following things. shes very nice and cares about her students but her lectures are not friendly to anyone, let alone people who have trouble keeping consistent *unwavering* attention on the board.

Make sure you have taken Calc 2 in high school prior to taking this class, unless you have a ton of time on your hands. I took this class in Fall 2021, and her teaching was not helpful. She is pretty disorganized and her lectures have little to no structure. The textbook for this class is pretty confusing, so having to rely on it was a pain since I did not gain much from lecture. I had taken this class in high school but college Calc 2 is drastically different- there was a lot more application to physics, especially in the first portion of the class, and the integrals were a lot harder. I got two Bs, a D, and an A on her midterms- they were not that hard, although it was difficult to know what to expect and her wording for questions is extremely poor. Her practice exams were also not that helpful, which we did not even receive until the last two exams. The worst part about Dr. Sahinoglu's teaching style is she did not prepare us at all for the final. The average was somewhere in the 40s, and I scraped by with a 50, which gave me a B- uncurved. I ended with a B+, so the curve was generous but did not make up for the fact that the class was taught so poorly. I am not a math genius by any means, but I do feel I could have done better if I had a better professor and I would avoid her if you can. The only thing that saved me in this class was having a good GSS leader, which you'll have to attend if you have Hatice.

Take Hatice if you are good at teaching yourself math. Lectures are practically a waste due to the fact that she often spends more time explaining arithmetic than the content that you are actually learning. Her tests are definitely on the easier side, being that we often get cheat sheets for important trig values and most of the questions are straightforward. My TA this semester has been my saving grace, teaching me exponentially more than Hatice.

I am not going to lie, I thought Hatice was a terrible professor. I will agree with the other reviews that state she is nice, but kindness does not cut it when the professor simply cannot teach. I did not feel like she did a good job with how she answered questions in class. She also frequently just started doing work without explaining what she was doing. Another thing is she would just do proofs that do not help the class at all and if anything make what she is doing more confusing and overall would just waste time in class. I often walked out of lectures confused as to what was going on. Her midterms are not too hard so studying would result in a fine grade on them, but the final was brutal. Thankfully I took this class in high school and doing that mixed with having a tutor and going to GSS sessions before tests made me be able to get an A in her class but I would not say that she is a professor that I would ever want to have again.

For some reference: I took AB and BC in high school I got a 5 on the BC exam but there were complications where I didn't get my score until the middle of the semester so I had to sit through the awful class of 141 even though I could have exempted it all along if the College Board was somewhat competent. I will say that I forgot a lot of the content, so I basically had to relearn it all with Hatice. Hatice is a very interesting professor. For starters, she really is not the best teacher. On one hand, her accent makes it a bit tougher to actually pay attention in class, but on the other hand she really just doesn't teach a lot of important concepts that are integral to the class. She generally goes overtime in lecture which makes it super annoying when you already have a walking conflict and on top of that says to read the rest of the chapter in the book. She is a pretty nice professor when it comes to making up exams and answering questions in class- I was very sick the night before/day of the exam and just had to email her and she let me take a makeup exam which didn't go the best for reasons I'll explain in the next section about exams. Hatice's exams are really medium-difficult but super easy compared to other professors' exams. Basically do the WebAssign homework (which take hours, to be honest), a couple of the suggested practice problems, and the practice exam (BEFORE the lecture preceding the exam because she generally does it as a "review" in class), and you should be good to go for her exams. I realized that her exams were significantly easier than the other professors' when I took that makeup exam and she gave us another professor's exam which literally looked like Chinese to me. I had no idea what was going on, and it was by far my worst grade. Although you might assume that easier exams are great.. they are NOT when it comes to the final, which other posts have mentioned. The mean was a 47 and the high was a 90 which is terrible for 20% of your grade. Overall, don't take Hatice if you can help it, but if you like to self-study most of the content or have taken BC before, and are ready to work extra hard for the final then she's not a terrible professor.

She really is a very nice person but she is not a very good teacher. Her lectures were useless (thank god I had a good TA, good luck if you don't) and keep in mind that the HW may take you a very long time (I did find it useful though). The major issue I have with how she taught the class is that while her tests were incredibly easy, this is a double edged sword because easy tests combined with little to no resources with which to study for the final made the final exam a massacre. The class is half the difficulty found on the final and for reference, the mean grade was a 47 and the high was a 90. Combined with the fact that it is 20% of your grade and she doesn't curve at all (no mercy here) this means that the final will probably drop your grade 5 points easily. She clearly is not teaching to the standards set by the department.

Very nice lady, but cannot teach to save her life. Everything I learned in this class came from my TA. Best advice I can give is don't go to lectures, never skip a discussion, and take the notes directly from the textbook/khan academy/some other source. Also her grading policies are terrible. Most other 141 professors drop the lowest exam grade, Hatice doesn't. Most other 141 professors also curve all 4 exams, Hatice doesn't curve any of them. Her lack of teaching abilities also left all her students extremely unprepared for the final, especially in the last 2 units.

Not a good professor for this class IMO. She is clearly very knowledgeable about statistics, and proves everything, so if that style resonates with you then she is probably worth taking. However, for everyone else, she rambles a lot and struggles explaining concepts in english. She is also easily distracted by students asking random questions in Zoom chat that may or may not have anything to do with the material. You can do well in her class by copying down everything she says and writes in lectures, and by reading the textbook, but you will not get a very high quality education in this class overall.

I thought her lectures were clear, and she went over a lot of examples to show us how to use the formulas. Most of the time she went over each concept/formula multiple times, so I felt pretty laid back/not stressed during lectures. She also gave a set of practice problems every week with solutions. I did notice that only 1/5 of the class showed up to lecture and almost no one came to my discussion section (it was usually me and 2 other people). So that might be why people aren't doing well in her class/coming here to give her a bad review. If you take her class my advice is to copy down everything she writes down in lecture and show up to discussion every week to copy down the problems/solutions there. Do that and you should be fine.

She is the worst professor I have ever had. I took her online this past semester because of corona (I didn't choose to as her ratings are awful. I was placed in her class instead of the professor I chose because UMD's protocol for this pandemic is to make life as difficult for students as possible). She has a thick accent and has no clue how to go over material. She's incredibly disorganized, makes the material way harder then it needs to be, and does not respond to emails. The TA's were all international students who barely spoke English and were clearly operating on different time zones as they too never responded to email. First W I had to take in my college career and my GPA is a 3.8 and I work my ass off. In short, stay away AT ALL COSTS, and if this is your only option, TAKE IT ANOTHER SEMESTER.

Took her during the corona semester so we didn't have a second midterm which made our final worth 50% of our grade. She barely went over the last few topics and then expected us to explain our answers on the final in gory detail. Average for the final was a 63, again worth 50% of our grade, and she barely curved it (+3 points I believe). She does not answer questions very well and is bad at communicating with her students when it comes to due dates for homeworks, etc. After taking this class, I feel as though I know very little about biostatistics and how to apply the math we learned to real life situations.

So the class itself was pretty easy up until the last two topics. The averages for both the midterms were good(90 and a 76), and the exams were exactly like the practice exams she gave beforehand. However, after the 2nd exam things started going downhill. I felt that we barely went over the material needed. The final exam focused only on topics after the 2nd midterm and she gave 0 practice on the final exam(she is a new teacher so we had nothing to go off of). Obviously this explains the insanely low average for the final, 65, and she refused to create a fair curve. For some reason she believes a 95% or higher is an A but a 60 is a C-, very unfairly weighted. Avoid this teacher unlesse you think you can get a 95+ on all assignments/quizzes. In addition, I also felt that the TAs had no idea what the professor was trying to do so discussions were helpful but often didn't relate at all to what we learned.

When it comes to doing examples in class she does not really cover them too much, but assigns homework on webassign every week that usually covers the topics in class.
