Professor Suarez is the most incredible professor the Smith School has to offer. He cares about his students, he is very passionate, very experienced, well spoken, and knowledgeable. I rave about him and his courses to all those that will listen. He is by far the most inspirational and transformational professor you will ever take. If you participate, contribute, and try hard you will undoubtedly succeed. But the best thing about his courses is that you learn material with substance, value, and real world application. DO not take this man for granted, he is incredible.

Here's some advice from an alum pulling six figures: open your fucking mind. I had Suarez years ago - and I am reading some shit advice from the current students: "your grade was just random chance" "doesn't teach you anything really valuable" "make sure to laugh at his jokes and tell him how great his speeches are" People who talk about assignments, exams, grades -- you didn't learn SHIT from him. You might as well have stayed home, because your brain was checked the fuck out in class. What were you doing, checking your Facebook feed? Here's the real deal: when you get out in industry, no one gives a SHIT what your GPA was -- they care about what you can deliver when things go bad. That's why you get hired: to solve problems; not because you got an A, passed a test or sucked up to your professor. If you expect your professor to spoon feed you what you need to know, then you're a tool and you'll get played until you learn to think for yourself. So how do you succeed in a Suarez class? FIRST. Go to class and approach what he presents like theory. It's abstract and that's the point: you need to figure out how to apply it to solve different kinds of problems. He's not going to give you a step-by-step, he's going to give you a compass heading. SECOND. If you think something is valuable, say so. If you think something is irrelevant, say so. Discuss your ideas and challenge your professor. You get what you put in. He told me some of the realest shit that is relevant YEARS later because I actually thought about where it came from. THIRD. Who gives a shit about your grade? You'll get an A. This is one class where you can actually focus on learning something rather than spinning your hamster wheel and churning out a grade that doesn't really matter. School is a game and no one cares about your score after you graduate. Don't like Steps 1-3? Quit and start a dead-end job because you lack the critical thinking to be in college.

Dr. Suarez was the most inspirational teacher I have had thus far at UMD. His lectures are all influenced by his past (amazing) experiences, working at top companies and serving in the White House. All of his speeches leave the students with a lesson learned and piece of wisdom; it makes you forget that you are simply in a college class. He has accomplished so much and has been connected with so many influential people; he has the incredible ability of touching you, broadening your perspectives, and changing the way you think about life. He is an absolutely amazing professor and if you have the chance to have him in a class, I would not let that go for granted!! He cares about the students, is extremely flexible, and will do whatever he can to support you and any of your endeavors.

This is all not true about Professor Suarez. I took BMGT 363 and I loved it and am taking another class with him because he is an amazing teacher. He knows his stuff, and the class is very interesting too. He is a great speaker and if someone is saying that he does not know his English..., then he is off his head!! Class syllabus changed only a bit, and I have seen this happening in any other class. All the life stories were tied with the topic, and it made us easy to remember the key terms with those stories. I fully recommend this class because you will learn a lot. A very easy class and he makes things easy for us. Very nice professor who cares for students and flexible too! Take this class and you will not regret at all!

Dr. Saurez was one of the most transformational professors I had at Maryland. His lessons are based on his years of experience working with Fortune 500 companies and in the White House with 2 past Presidents of the United States. Ie. he doesn't just regurgitate a textbook, he brings real insight from things he has uncovered in the real world. Dr. Suarez has the ability to change the way you think about both your life, and your academic projects - but you have to put in the dedication to learn. It's clear from the reviews below that students were not interested in opening their mind and being a part of their own education. They lost out on a great opportunity to learn from a brilliant professor. If you are driven, ambitious and want to become more innovative in the way you about think and tackle problems, take his classes.

Dr. Suarez is by far the best professor that UMD RH SMITH School of business put before us. Not only is he very knowledgeable, but he is also very professional, organized, well mannered, approachable, patient, determined, caring, and very easy to talk too. He doesn't bore you with death by power point like most other teachers, instead he provides real life insight that one can use post graduation. He teaches based on actual knowledge and also incorporates theories, which is good, because lets be honest, how many people actually use useless theories in the real world (Pythagorean theorem)? would much rather learn things that can be applicable to every day life. Thank you for not killing us with useless information, and actually preparing for our future. In regards to his expectations, he outlines them day one of class, and then its up to the students to be adults and know when things are due. Just like in the real world, no one will come up to you 2 times a week and remind you that you have something due. I honestly think that Dr. Suarez is the best instructor, professor, leader, advisor, and role model that UMD has. I am thankful that I was able to learn so much from him, in the short time that i had him as a teacher, and hope that now that I am in the MBA program I will be able to have him once again, as I know that there are a lot of things that I can learn from a guy of his Caliber

He was a great professor very passionate about his class but I don't think he was as engaging as he should be. This is not a hand-out class where all you'll have to do is show up and turn in your assignments and it will be an easy "A". You get what you put in with this class. Dr. Suarez doesn't teach; he more so guides/shares his honest experiences and situations he has encountered in the past. DON'T bash him because he actually treats student like adults. Grow up and learn to realize that not every Professor will use the same teaching style. If you're real business students you will learn to adapt and still excel in any given environment.

He is one of the most disorganized professors ever. His expectations for assignments were not clear, he would forget when they were due, and then expect you to have them. His exams were completely random and pretty impossible to study for. There was a huge spread on all of the exams because your grade was just random chance. The only positive thing I can say about the class is that it wasn't too much work. The exams were multiple choice, there were a few short written assignments, and one group project throughout the semester.

What can I say about Suarez, to start nothing good. He is disorganized, unprofessional, and often times rude. When students had questions he would say sharply "Did I open the floor for questions?" I am surprised with his head being so big he can actually walk into the classroom. He is about as disorganized as a 5 year old and that's a compliment. What I find so comical is the fact that he calls himself a leader yet he has no idea what's going on. He doesn't even know when assignments are due and he created another syallbus to add to the already established confusion. His life stories back when he was a Democrat with Bill "The Cheater" Clinton and George Busch got old, grow up and stop living in the past. Shouldn't a leader plan for the future and not live in the past? His exams are off the wall. Every answer choice could be the answer, he tries to trick you. He constantly says "Don't worry about grades" but still decides to be a hard grader and fail everyone. He assigns the same grades to the whole class so I guess he is lazy and doesn't take the time to read our assignments. His GA was MIA (I guess the idiot took an extended spring break) so that was Suarez's excuse. I had to day dream in this worthless class to stay sane. Listening to his bad English and dealing with his unprofessionalism was mind blowing, which is not in a good way. Trust me when I say this that he is just another bad professor at the Smith School. Like most professor here, they think they know everything and they don't. Just a fool in a suit.

You have to really feel bad for this guy. He's truly an amazing person, who comes into class every day and gives us these inspiring messages and stories from his life experience. It's really a very enjoyable experience -- until you get to the graded assignments. The Management Department is the actual professor of the class. They decide what assignments to give, what questions should go on the test, how the syllabus and grading works... They basically tell the professors what to do, and the professors have no choice but to follow. Because of this, the class: 1) Is out of 563 points. Yeah, you heard me. Try calculating your grades in this *****. Hint: you can't. 2) Is based entirely on the slides, which are usually not based on the book. Which is fine, but Suarez knows as well as we all do that the slides don't impart actual valuable information, so he doesn't bother teaching them. 3) Has an exam written to include questions based on class discussions that each class was supposed to have, whether or not the classes had the discussions. 4) Includes ridiculous assignments with no clear guidance, no clear grading scheme, and no method to question grades received. 5) Takes attendance in every lecture. 6) Doesn't teach you anything really valuable. Everyone has to take 364, which sucks. But don't take it with Suarez; he's a nice guy, but isn't actually a professor.

jose is a nice guy, tries hard and means well for his students. that being said his slideshows are useless and lectures cover his life story, nothing related to the book. his exams are challenging and vague he expects you to magically know all the material. he is also terribly disorganized. avoid him

Please do not take BMGT364 with this man. While he is a nice guy, he is not very good at teaching and often gets off topic, trying to give motivational speeches about why we were accepted into the business school and how we should want to learn. If you think that this will be easy because he give 93% A's, that is for his engineering seminars and very high level business courses, not 364. This is the kind of class where the disorganization and ambiguity of the teacher works against the students. He often does not notify us when certain"in-class assignments" are do, as well as different case write-ups. He calls them in-class assignments, but he says to finish them before class and turn them in at the beginning class. And if you don't turn one of these in, you're SOL, because he accepts nothing late for a portion of the grade. If it is late, it doesn't get graded and you get a zero. His tests are also pretty difficult. The short answer/essay portion is rather straightforward and predictable, but the multiple choice answers can sometimes come from nowhere and often have more than one answer. I think I am going to get a C in this class, and I can honestly say that it is not my fault. I studied for the first exam for about two hours, thinking that the material was basically common sense (it is), but he found a way to make it difficult. I studied for the second exam for six hours, and walked out of it feeling negligibly better than after the first one. All in all, Jose is a great guy and his heart is in the right place, but his disorganization and poorly written tests ultimately hurt the students.

Suarez 's ability to keep you engaged with his glorious stories and above-average sense of humor makes him a decent lecturer, in the sense that you at least won't be asleep for 75 minutes. However, he has this hint of superiority around him at all times and that really annoyyed the shit out of me. Like the reviews below me, make sure to laugh at his jokes and tell him how great his speeches are.

Hey, the guy below me. Your review is a bit extreme and we can think of only one person who would write like that. Yeah, that's right. Neighbors know your name. If I may add my few cents, it's absurd for us to judge him based on our conventional way of thinking. Dr. Suarez comes from a new school of thought called systems thinking. If you hadn't noticed, he has been teaching us systems thinking since day 1. Some of us found it a tad difficult to comprehend it at first. However, once you think outside the box and actually try to understand, you will realize that it makes sense and acquire a new way to approach problems, thereby opening yourself up to a whole new world of opportunities. On a different note, it is very obscene and incongruent to compare Dr. Suarez with Mr. Hitler. Whereas Mr. Hitler was a fine political orator but a terrible military commander who had no idea what he was talking about, Dr. Suarez is not only an eloquent speaker but also fully understands his knowledge and comes to his lectures prepared. (And why are you suddenly mentioning about President Obama? I think it was very inappropriate for you to bring politics here.) However, as many others pointed out, he does have a huge ego, perhaps "one too big for the classroom." In addition, he picks favors in the class and gets upset when he disagrees with (or dislikes) the answer or presentation. This trait probably comes from the 12 years of his tenure at the White House and/or his reputation in his field; this is common for people who are well-established in their careers. Nevertheless, it could come as very annoying and would certainly make students feel like the class is about nothing but his career. It's like listening to a war veteran's stories. Overall, I would give him a 4 out of 5. Although some of his stories were discordant with the overall course and his pride certainly came as a bit disturbing to some of us, his class was an invaluable experience for me. Systems thinking really taught me how to approach problems holistically. This new way of thinking has allowed me to understand issues more comprehensively and more clearly. Some of his lectures were also very inspirational. Protip #1: He cares about his students. Try to visit him during his office hours or stay after class. Protip #2: Write down his quotes. They come in quite handy.

Totally agree with the review below me. Hitler gave great speeches (and does Obama), but I wouldn't ever pay tuition dollars to either one of those two to teach me one of the more educational classes in the QUEST program. I really hate the way he teaches, and although there's no way around taking BMGT390H with him, be sure to kiss his ass like everyone else does in order to get a good grade.

Dr. Suarez is great presenter and speaker but that's about it. He spent a majority of the semester giving motivational speeches and left only less than a month for the "semester long" project. He also picks favors in the class and left a few teams hanging with no help whatsoever. He does have a HUGE ego and perhaps one too big for the classroom. Get ready for HIS stories and HIS experiences and tell him how great and important HE is if you want to be on his good side.

Dr. Suarez is a really good speaker. He knows his stuff, and he presents it well. He has a HUGE ego and he talks about himself and how important he is, and everything he's done (he does know how to cover it by saying he's given up all that fame to teach... but yeah...). Anyway he does have some inspirational lectures and he does get you to think differently.

Dr. Suarez is one of the wisest teachers on this campus. I definitely recommend this class, not because of the grade I will get, but because of the invaluable insight I gained from his wisdom.
