Horrible professor. Doesn't teach anything, doesn't listen to feedback, doesn't even make FIRE a research-based experience at all. This review is kind of pointless now that Dr. Tu is leaving the university, but for the record, FIRE is a pretty fraudulent program; purely smoke and mirrors to make you think you'll be in an exclusive research program to learn cutting edge tech and AI when in reality it's just an 8 credit program with 2 free geneds aand practically zero opportunity for learning or growing.

DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!!! Each week you have to copy down his code on his slides, and while this may seem easy, there is ALWAYS MANY mistakes in his slides. It is so frustrating debugging his code when you have zero clue what is going on in his code. This class takes me more effort than both CMSC132 and CMSC250 combined. Do yourself a favor and take Autonomous Unmanned Systems.

I entered this FIRE stream extremely excited to learn about ML but after the semester finished, I decided not to finish the program because this class was so bad. I was under the impression that this was an introductory course for both Python and machine learning, but the pace was unrealistic for that. I BS'd everything and didn't understand even the most basic of concepts for ML, yet somehow I got an A+. I was blessed to have a god-like programmer on my team who actually understood machine learning concepts but I hardly contributed (not out of laziness but literally because I was that incompetent.) Lecture is also pointless and lab is only useful for finishing other homework.

The COML FIRE stream isn't intolerable, but was barely tolerable. Half of the time I didn't know what was going on and the other half was just BSing my way through team meetings. You learn a lot of the material through online courses, but going to lecture is pointless. Lab was just a place to do homework. I recommend choosing another stream (Autonomous Unmanned Systems Stream). Dr. Tu is barely involved in the entire process, simply steering our project directions and being involved with the weekly team meetings.
