Hands down, Mr. Wilson is a very nice person! But just like how I’m not graded on being a nice student, this review isn’t based on personality. It’s based on performance. I think that Mr. Wilson fell short at times in being able to explain things in ways that made it easier for the different learning styles to understand. Sometimes, I needed the TLDR version, but he gave me the unabridged version complete with proof. Or, I just needed a different approach to solving a problem but he could only offer the explanation a certain way. Even he would be apologetic about that at times. I think that he connected well to certain learning styles, but not mine. Some of the earning back points thing that people reference below wasn’t offered until after the third exam (of four exams before the final). This occurred AFTER the last withdrawal period, so ironically, the people who probably most needed to earn back points weren’t given that opportunity. Throughout the semester, the web assign homework was laborious, and I thought that the recitation worksheets were often too long and overly complex. Sometimes they required a level of application that seemed premature given that we had just been introduced to the concepts, and sometimes they covered things we hadn’t learned. The time during recitation/discussion wasn’t really spent going over the content enough (unless you’re a fast learner). We had just a few mins in the beginning where students would rush to try to get their questions from the homework or lecture answered before spending the majority of time in groups attempting to complete the worksheets, even though we didn’t always know what we were doing. (The homework and worksheets were graded on accuracy.) Going into the quizzes was a similar thing: a scramble for questions after which sometimes left me feeling more confused than when I went in. I don’t know how well the TAs and instructor communicated. There were occasions when Mr. Wilson would tell us that he’d have the TAs go over something, but they wouldn’t. I was also in a recitation section that was a combination of different sections all in the same room—like, 90 people and 3 TAs. Couldn’t even see the whiteboard half the time because we were at round tables and they wouldn’t always use the projector so that everyone could see. Other sections had only 30 students max. The exams were also unreasonably long, particularly exams 2 and 3 (and especially 3). A lot of us didn’t finish, so I guess that’s why the opportunity to earn back points was offered. Generally, I found the class pretty confusing and stressful. I didn’t usually feel well prepared for the exams but that’s not solely because of Mr. Wilson. There were things that I needed to work on better too. Still, some of the class policies & procedures didn’t help. But I will say that given the feedback, Mr. Wilson was more responsive in the end, and I think that he will continue to improve and become a great instructor for a wider audience. He definitely cares about the subject and about you as a student. But for the time that I was in the class, I didn’t enjoy it and would have benefitted from a different learning environment. So just try to find the right environment for you. |

Dr. Wilson is an amazing prof. He is dedicated to his students and really wants all of his students to not only understand the material but to enjoy it and try to look at math from a different angel. I personally struggle with math and have really bad math anxiety but I can truly say after this course I feel like I have gained a new found confidence in my math skills. If you are taking any math class and see that Dr. Wilson has an opening TAKE IT!!! For the course load, he is very flexible as long as you communicate. Also use the office hours because they will help clear up any lingering questions you may have and he is willing to work with you. He is very passionate about math and teaching and you can really see that in the classroom. I would definitely recommend. |

Prof. Wilson is a very passionate and understanding instructor. Although it is sometimes difficult to follow his lectures because he talks a lot about how specific equations are derived or the theoretical concept at the core of the lesson, he does lots of practice problems and posts extra if we run out of time during the class. You can clearly feel his passion for teaching and the class; he makes the lectures engaging and he always stays after class to answer questions from students. In terms of grading, the partial credit was very generous for most of the midterms, and there was even an opportunity for point recovery on one. The midterms were reflective of the practice tests he posted beforehand. The only criticism I would have are that the online H.W. questions were often not representative of what we covered in class and were unnecessarily hard. For studying for tests, the worksheets handed out during discussions were a much better resource than the H.W. But overall, I recommend Prof. Wilson if you're taking MATH140 as he clearly cares about his students and has reasonable expectations and exams. |

TAKE MATTHEW WILSON!!!!!!!!!!!! He is really good at teaching the content for this class. Most of the time I understood everything he says and is always available after class if you're confused with something. He does assign a LOT of homework but is always open to giving you extentions if you email him. He's also just a very nice guy, I've talked with him after class before just on random topics and he is just very chill. His tests were pretty hard I will say however he offers points back on in class quizzes in discussion sections, and is very leaning with partial credit. If calc scares you and you can get into a section with him I highly recommend you do. The TA's too were so helpful at covering some topics that were hard. I will also say that his discussion worksheets are pretty challenging, I'd make friends with people in your discussion and ask for help if you need it. TAKE MATTHEW WILSON!!!!! |

Professor Wilson is awesome! He is very patient, and loves to answer any and all questions you have. He is SOOO passionate about math and it is so evident he wants everyone to succeed. I went to office hours and they were very helpful and I definitely recommend going. In terms of content - he made it clear what was going to be on the tests. They were pretty similar to the practice exams he provided us. Homework could be annoying I am not a fan of web assign, but we expressed this to him and he's thinking of changing it for next semester. Overall, great professor and take him if you can! |

Professor Wilson is really passionate about math and it comes across in his teaching. His lectures are really interesting and relatively easy to understand. He is good at answering questions. The only critique is that the online homeworks he assigns are bad but I think he was teaching this course for the first time and he said he was considering changing it in the future due to feedback he got. Overall I definitely recommend him for MATH140. |

Mr. Wilson is so nice, but he isn't the best at explaining topics. You can tell he really likes math and obviously knows a lot, but the way he explains the content is how his brain works (which is a math wiz) so if your not so quick to pick things up like me you might not like him. He tends to overcomplicate things in lecture, and he focuses a lot on the proof for each problem rather than teach you how to actually solve it. His exams were also always harder than the practice done in class or in the practice exams. Overall great guy, but not the BEST teacher. |

A more recent review* Professor Wilson is really easygoing and friendly teacher. He explains things thoroughly, uses a lot of examples, answers any questions. He's also fairly available and answers emails pretty quick. In terms of coursework, midterms are not too challenging; As long as you keep up with HW, worksheets, yada yada, you will most likely do well in the class. All in all, definitely recommend taking Matthew for math. |

Matt is amazing. He is one of the best teachers for MATH213 that I've heard about. He explains things to students understanding and makes the class easy. He is such a nice teacher and is very flexible with his students. 3 midterms and a final, somewhat weekly homework and a few quizzes. He offers test corrections and extra credit. He is willing to work with and help students. |

Mr. Wilson was one of the best professors I had my freshman year and was super helpful. He gave weekly homework, only checked them occasionally, would offer to go over hw questions we had trouble with, and had weekly Friday quizzes on 2-3 sections. He explained confusing wording in a simple way and helped the class visualize models when certain questions were difficult wording wise. He was always available outside class during office hours, and would go out of his way to meet with you through zoom if you couldn't make his in-person office hours. Super friendly and welcoming professor, 10/10 would recommend if you need your FSMA credit and want to actually learn in a safe/open environment!! |
