Agonizing class. Tough and confusing grader with no rhyme or reason to his feedback. The reading itself isn't that hard, and the work is doable. As other reviews mention, he'll claim you're lacking something in your answers but most of the time it's already in there, just stated slightly differently. It almost seems like he genuinely doesn't know how to interpret a slightly differently worded answer than what he would give, which is pretty baffling. I'm a double history and Chinese major, so I'm used to tough classes and a ton of reading. This is easily the most frustrating class I've taken at UMD. Two stars because I really do like Dr. Zhou as a person, and outside of class he's easier to talk to. He's one of those professors who is an accomplished scholar but an exceedingly boring lecturer.

Like many of my classmates, I didn't have a great experience in Prof. Zhou's class. He's a friendly guy but a very tough grader. I wouldn't mind the grading being more challenging if it was actually consistent and his feedback was logical. His comments consist of telling you what points your discussion post lacks (even if it's already included in your answer!!!) You almost have to guess what he's looking for and try to write it word for word exactly as he would. It's very, very formulaic. The material should be interesting, but the lectures are dry as dust. Two stars because he's a nice guy, but if this class wasn't required I'd never take it again.

His class isn't the most life-changing but I really don't think he deserves 1 star. I know it's a required class for the minor, but if you are even mildly curious about the subject, the readings are actually very interesting. His lectures are restatements of the readings, so it's not particularly riveting, and participation points mean you have to be there, but there are worse things. He's a friendly guy, tough grader (as in you cannot get a perfect score) but I think it'll be fine if he curves?

I know for many this will be a required course because of the Chinese minor, but if you can avoid taking this class, please avoid it. Professor Zhou is a very nice guy, but he is a terrible grader and the class is unbearably boring. I have had multiple times where he will take off points for an assignment then leave a comment saying what should be included, but I added exactly the thing he is saying was missing. His grading is all over the place, there is truly no rhyme or reason for why he gives the score he does, but he will certainly take off points. His lectures will put you to sleep, even though the material should be pretty interesting. Don't take this class if you don't have to. Try to find another class to fulfill the linguistic requirement if you value your sanity.
