Im being so honest she is probably the best teacher I have ever had in any subject. The course material is very easy to get and she makes it so easy with her enthusiasm and genuine love and passion for the subject she is teaching. I came into this class thinking history was the most boring subject and that I would take this class as an easy GenEd. Now I look forward to this class every day and I now have a passion for the subject that Professor Egan taught. The only difficult part about this class was memorizing specific dates for your lecture list works but if you make a good quizlet this issue is no longer as difficult. Could not recommend this class more. Its relatively easy, very interesting, and Professor Egan is a wonderful and caring teacher.

I had Cui for ARTH200 over the winter semester, and I highly recommend it if you find the topic interesting and are a strong writer. His lectures are a bit stale, but that's par for the topic. His first language isn't English, so he talks a bit slower but speaks very clearly. He is very understanding about assignments and will work with you if you need extra time. He wants you to do well and gives very constructive and encouraging feedback. If you are not a passionate writer or philosophical thinker, maybe avoid taking this class, as that is the bread and butter of the course. You can tell Cui is very passionate, well-read, and excited about the topic and is a thorough lecturer. I came out of this intensive course understanding the world through art and being able to identify origin countries and eras-- very cool skills to use, especially when walking around DC or even campus. Highly recommend Cui.

I was really worried about taking this class as I heard that you have to write a lot of notes and you have to listen carefully for things she says which could be used on the exams. But overall I enjoyed this class. I am not an artist by any means but I found this class so interesting and excited to go to the lectures each week. If you can't focus in lectures or don't go you shouldn't take this class but if you put in the work you can get an A. The TAs are very helpful (thank you Maggie) and I recommend going to office hours when the exams are close. The workload is not bad at all, you have 3 exams, a small 200-word writing assignment for each discussion that you complete before you go, and a Douglass Journal that helps to boost your grade. The exams consist of listing the title, place, and date of a work as well as its significance. Then you have a variety of terms to define, and finally, a work you haven't seen before where you will be asked questions about it. The exams are fast paced but if you are prepared you shouldn't worry.

This class IS NOT A GEN ED. Egan makes it incredibly difficult to memorize all the significances of each work you cover per exam. The subdivisions of information is vast and the TA's treat it like life or death. They expect you to take this class like its your whole major when its merely a 200 level gen ed. I've seen 400 levels with less work which is embarrassing. Only about 40% of the test information is actually on the slides so if you miss something its extremely awkward to ask them about what you missed. If you've taken orgo 1, it's like asking Dr. Koppel or Gen chem 2 Dixon about how to do something. Avoid at all costs unless you want to work your butt off...

Dr. Egan was a great professor! I took this course to fulfill a gen-ed requirement and ended up loving it! There is always one slide during her lecture that contains any upcoming exams or assignments, which helped me stay on track. The weekly assignments are fairly simple, and majority of the exams are based on memorization (however, you do need to know some context of the works). The class was very engaging and the course was very organized overall.

Very knowledgeable and passionate professor. Kind of self-important and annoying. Do not take ARTH200 if you want an easy A, it's a lot of work. She talks really fast and doesn't put essential information (things that you will be asked to present during an exam) in the text on her slides. Everything she says could be on the exam and if you miss class you're completely boned. She makes you recall in which lectures she mentioned a term or piece which is just dumb in my opinion. TLDR: she's a good professor but annoying and makes her unimportant gen-ed feel like an upper-level course

Good teacher. Very invested into her career. Doesn't record lectures so you'll have to attend them, however the workload isn't bad and there's 2 essays throughout the course. TAs are great, very knowledgeable, definitely use them for the essays and any other questions. Discussions are basically mandatory since their graded. As long as you put in the time to attend lecture and discussion the class is pretty easy.

Great professor. She goes fast, but provides students with all the content they need for class. As long as you show up to lectures and discussion, you will be good.

Great gen ed to take to knock out credits. Prof Gensheimer is a good teacher and knows her stuff, and the class is so organized, it's great not having to put in more effort than needed. Sometimes lectures would be boring depending on my mood and if I wanted to be there, but I went to most of them and never had problems with quizzes or the writing assignments. If you like learning about art this is definitely the class for you, and even if you don't, you'll at least take a few facts you didn't know before away from it. This class drops off towards the end of the semester because both writing assignments we did were on Egyptian, Greek, and Roman periods, so take from that what you will. This class was super manageable and I really enjoyed the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman periods. Good prof

Really passionate professor and a GREAT lecturer. Lectures are very interesting and I honestly really enjoyed what I learned and apply it to my daily life all the time. The discussions are fine, but kind of unnecessary. The TA's are very nice and knowledgable but a little harsh on grading. There are easy and quick weekly quizzes, two main papers, and one reflection paper. Overall great class and I would take it again.

Really good lecturer and knows a lot about the topics. Her course and specifically her ELMS page is really well laid out, super easy to follow and what is expected of you. She also really takes the time to show you each week where to find assignments on Canvas and remind you of each assignment due. There are also a lot of different types of assignments going into your grade that keeps it more balanced. Outside of a couple of papers due throughout the semester, the class is fairly easy if you go to lecture and at least skim the textbook.

Dr.Gensheimer is an extremely engaging and knowledgeable professor. The lectures are decently fast-paced, but are very entertaining and the time passes quickly. The quizzes and assignments are all very fair and easy to do if you go to lecture and do the readings. Outside of class, I only did like an hour of work for the class weekly. I really enjoyed the course and think it was an easy A if you attend lectures.

Prof Egan was awesome, she made the class enjoyable and always gave us fun facts about the pieces we were learning about. If you make quizlets and memorize meanings for the artwork, you will ace the midterm and final. She gives a lot of leeway for points on the exam as well, and also gives the opportunity for extra credit on both to earn points back. The majority of the grades are in the weekly discussion assignments. Her TA's were wonderful and incredibly helpful and understanding. Attendance is not mandatory but the notes are what you need to do well on exams so I would attend as often as you can.

She is one of my favorite professors so far, her lectures are interesting and engaging, and genuinely enjoyable. She has great TAs and is always open to questions, and also always willing to help if needed. As long as you attend class or at least look at the slides and attend discussions this is an easy pass. Her exams are simple and aren't too difficult to prepare for, especially with the help you receive from the TA in discussion before the exam date. The slow-looking sessions are relaxed and not too high stakes, they genuinely help with identifying certain traits and help out during the unknown works. Though my memorization sucks, I was able to pass both exams by studying with flashcards and looking over the material recommended by the TAs. I hope I am able to take another history class with Professor Egan, a great professor, even if you aren't an art student I recommend taking her class to fulfill your requirement.

Dr. Egan was awesome. I took her class as a gened and loved it. The class is heavy on memorization but it's not bad unless you really hate the material. The final and midterm were really straightforward, exactly what Dr. Egan said it would be. Section was fun and my TA was awesome (shoutout Mekayla!), homework was light and overall the workload was only a lot when studying for the midterm or final. If you get the chance to take a class with Dr. Egan and are even remotely interested in art history, take it! Dr. Egan always excited to teach and it makes her class very engaging.

LOVED THIS CLASS! I took this class to fulfill some gen ed requirements and was so surprised by how much I ended up loving the material. There is a bunch of memorization but I really didn't think it was so bad. For the midterm and final you'll need to memorize the name, location, and date created of around 35 different artworks. Professor Egan does her best to help you memorize the terms and gives hints as to what will be on the exams. The exams aren't designed to be impossible. The discussions felt useful and my TA was great. If you were a percy jackson kid you'll like this class.

Amazing teacher, the lectures are always fun and easy to follow and the TA discussions are really helpful as well. The class structure is all found in modules and everything can be accessed. The only thing I will note is that you will have to memorize lots of things (some definitions, dates, art work, etc). But if you don't mind or like art, this is the class to take. Not much workload, basically an assignment due every week in discussion (easy work) and 2 tests (midterm and final). Really easy to study for, just make a quizlet and you will be fine. Ended up getting an 102 and 104 on the tests. Love the class and teacher!

Professor Gensheimer was a great lecturer. Her lectures are kind of fast-paced but her lectures and the content she taught were relevant and interesting. She tells the class her expectations at the beginning of the semester and is consistent all throughout. She posts an announcement each week explaining what we will be learning during the week and what needs to be completed. I highly recommend taking this course with her! There is a quiz every other week in this class and they are not too hard but she does not allow retakes.

I took this class Spring 2021 when we were online. Her lectures were a bit boring and hard to get through. Though I like art history, I found this class dull. I did like the discussion sections though. I don't recommend doing the textbook reading. I went without it, and I got an A. Just review the power points and your notes.

I personally loved Professor Egan, she does a really good job with her power points and hinting at what is important on the exams. There are three exams none are cumulative. If you like art history definitely take her class, she keeps lectures very interesting. If art history and memorizing dates are not your thing this class will be somewhat difficult for you. But she is by far one of my favorite professors!!

This class is a pretty solid choice for an elective (as it can get both your DVUP and DSHU done). The class consisted of 2 lectures along with 1 discussion per week, where the lectures were basically her just reading her own powerpoints and maybe sometimes adding a few minor details. She is pretty kind and occasionally makes some interesting real-world connections and takes questions during lectures if you have any. She is also honest enough to say "I don't know" when she is not sure about something and will usually do some research to make sure the information she gives is correct. The discussion section days consisted of doing a free-write exercise for completion and an attendance grade and usually just talked about the same thing as a lecture or a fun activity. Half the entire course consisted of a Fredrick Douglass statue where we had a major project consisting of 45% of our final grade. Essentially 30% of our grade was just going to the statue and writing about it and how it looked and doing this weekly throughout the entire course. Assuming you did this was an easy completion grade. At the end of the semester, however, we need to write a 3-4 page paper on it which can be time-consuming, but assuming you know how to write a decent paper and follow the page requirement, then that too should be a free grade. The other 55% of the grade came from 10% attendance from discussions, and 45% from the tests. Tests were usually 50ish multiple-choice problems followed by 3 paragraph response style questions that had to do with important sculptures or artworks from the time period. The 50-minute time limit and these 3 questions were significantly hard but she specifically tells us which things they would be. She makes a list of all the vocabulary words on the multiple-choice and the list of possible artworks for the written responses, so the tests were really fair and consistent with what she teaches and posts or discusses in lecture (give or take a few multiple-choice questions and the fast time limit.) Make a GroupMe and exchange/create quizlets for every single test and study them consistently and every test should be an A or B and if you did all the other assignments your final grade would end up as an A. To sum up, she's a pretty good teacher, you could get away with skipping lectures occasionally if you view the PowerPoint at home, as long as you take lots of notes and use some sort of studying tool to memorize the terms. This class is definitly possible to get a good grade in.

Professor Gensheimer's lectures are information-heavy and fast-paced but contain all the information you need to know to do well in the course, The quizzes are straightforward, and the grading is fairly lenient. I began with no interest in art but the class was inspiring in the importance of Art in human history and to society, as well as immensely relatable to engineering.

ARTH200 is certainly not an easy A class if you're looking for one. If your life doesn't depend on this class, meaning it doesn't have anything to do with your major, do not take it as an elective. Go for something more fun. The class can be super boring. You have to memorize a ton of useless information like the height of a particular statue made 2000 years ago. Egan gave us two response papers on two articles that were tough to read and very unengaging, and the second one was 20 pages! You will also have weekly quizzes that aren't easy to take. One final thing, she had recorded her voice over Powerpoint slides, which was a nice thing to do and I appreciate her time for that, but you CANNOT listen to a prerecorded voice on X2 speed on Powerpoint. (Super boring sometimes) I personally had no fun in this class and took an L by taking it.

Dr. Gensheimer is a well-informed, organized, consistent professor. However, lectures tend to be pretty dry, and the dim lights in her room are pretty annoying when you're trying to stay awake. Do not take ARTH200 as an easy 'A' class, because it requires a good modicum of effort to even hover at a B+.

As a CMSC major with no interest in the arts whatsoever, this class was actually pretty interesting. Great lecturer, always kept me engaged in class. She dimmers the lights so that you can read the slides easier (which I personally like) but a few of my friends said that it made it hard for them to take notes so keep that in mind. Tests were extremely fair. If you pay attention in class, you should be able do well on exams without much extra work. You can also do well on the exams without being extremely intuitive / knowledgeable about art and symbolism. My only complaints for this class were that the textbook was required (I managed to go through the entire semester and get an A without reading one of the "required" reading assignments) and the discussions are kind of boring, but also required as they check attendance.

This was a fun class to take. It does take time to memorize all the facts, dates and names of the art structures (use flashcards). However, it is a fun class. Ms. Martinez presents the notes in an orderly fashion. Discussion is mandatory so good, it's 20% of your grade. One paper which is not bad, however if you are like me who never toke an art history class, visit the person provided to help you with the paper. The exams are fair. Overall, the class was great, your grade depends on your time and dedication.

Prof Martinez is a nice teacher. You learn a lot about different cultures in this class. Be prepared to memorize in this class. Be prepared to participate in discussion classes. This class was sooo crazy. You have to do an insane amount of memorizing and writing but it is probably easier than what other professors require. She's a nice person but her lectures can be kinda dull. There is a paper, two midterms, and a final. There are also quizzes for discussion. Discussion will be contingent upon ur TA. The class overall isn't hard; it's not really necessary to buy the book. It will be helpful to study for ur exams but it isn't needed otherwise. If u go to all the lectures u won't need the book. grades come back in a somewhat timely manner and as long as you pay attention and go to most of the lectures u are pretty much guaranteed a B. Getting an A requires a lot more effort; you basically need to get an A on most of the assignments. Overall the class isn't bad but it got kinda annoying to do all the writing and memorizing near the end but it's not a hard class and attendance isn't taken.

She is a really good professor and a nice lady. The class is really easy with her. If you need to get your HA CORE out of the way, take her. Its an easy A. Take notes, read the book and you should do fine on the exam. The slides from lectures are pretty much the same on the exam. The unknown slides (1 or 2) during the exam that she wants us to guess is really obvious and very similar to the one seen in class. She only makes you memorize the date range of each piece of art rather than specific dates. You also have to do one three page paper, which is easy. The essays on the exam are posted online so we have ample time to prepare for it. The final exam is not cumulative, only the final exam essay is. She gives you the whole semester to prepare for the final exam essay. As long as you go to lectures, take notes, read the book you will do well in class. Let me put it this way, a friend took the same course in a community college and he said he was failing the course. Thats how crazy the course can be with other professors. So if you need a chill class and grade booster, take Dr. Martinez. With all that being said, I think your grade in class also depends partly on who you have as your TA. My TA was much better than some of the other ones who gave really difficult quizzes with weird formats. But overall you should still should not have problem getting a good grade.

Martinez is a very nice teacher. She explains thoroughly about each artwork, so if you pay attention and take notes, you will do well as long as you take the time to memorize a lot of slides. The exams are pretty easy, since she posts the slides you need to know and the possible exam questions online. The TA is very engaging but the quizzes are harder than the test in my opinion. Overall, as long as you take the time to memorize the slides and since the material is not difficult you will do well in the class.

Dr. Martinez is the best! She does a brilliant job of explaining the artistic and historical context of each object. However, she does not make you learn the exact date something was made, just the period. So you spend less time staring at a sheet of dates and more time contemplating form and meaning. Also, she gives you a list of images that might be on the exam (roughly half of the images covered in class, I think) and she lets you know the essay questions in advance. So as far as Art History goes, there is not a lot of memorization. The introductions/summaries she does at the beginning and end of each chapter are fascinating and helpful to those who appreciate her insights. This is not the easiest class at Maryland, but it's not the hardest either. If you really care about Art History then you will love it!

Dr. Martinez is really cool. She knows her art very well. She is also very fair. Only one of two midterms count (the higher one). Not much work except for the paper. But there is A LOT of memorizing! So if you're bad at that, I do not recommend this class. I thought I would hate this class because I'm not an artsy person at all. I was just taking it for Core. But I absolutely loved it! I found it very interesting and actually considered majoring in art history after this.
