HIST429Z

Special Topics in History; American Money: Rethinking Finance and its History

Conventional treatments of money and finance do not match the historical record. While most economics textbooks say otherwise, money has its origins in credit relationships and has always performed a credit function. In this seminar, we'll briefly revisit that long history and debates among scholars about money' origins and nature. Then we'll sample key moments in the American experience-from the colonial period to the present-to examine money's role in shaping the nation s history.
