Participation and attendance are weighted VERY heavily and if you miss even one class it could bring you down a whole letter grade. As other reviews say, it's really awkward when no one answers a question because Foster will just stare at you for MINUTES if no one answers but it's honestly kind of funny. They have a way of being funny without trying so if you take him you'll definitely be entertained.

Tbh UNIV100 is a pretty inconsequential class so I don't think your choice of professor will make much of a difference but Lori Kader is a great choice! She shows that she cares about her students every time we have class. Some examples are always asking us about how our classes are going, listening to our concerns, and letting kids leave if they don't feel great. She's definitely knowledgable in the subjects covered in UNIV and is happy to answer questions. She works primarily in the PSYC department so she's a great connection to have if you plan to major in psyc. Some of my classmates mentioned that they were distracted by her lisp however you get used to it quickly and it does not affect her ability to lead and teach the class.

Gene (he likes us to call him by his name) is one of the best resources and people to know at UMD. UNIV100 was a pretty chill class, where we just sat in a circle and talked about stuff and the week. We also had short journals (they were fun for me, tbh) and small assignments every week to explore and try different activities on campus. Depending on our input, Gene would give us feedback on what we could do better if we were struggling with something and gave us tips for campus resources. Since he's one of the seniors at UMD (30+ years!), he practically knows everyone on campus, so if you ever need help with something, he can always refer you to someone if he might not be able to directly help. Gene is a great guy and genuinely wants you to do well moving forward in your academic journey. Would definitely recommend if you need to take UNIV100.

I dreaded the 2-hour chunk in my schedule, but I don't regret taking this class because Sarah was really nice! There are mandatory assignments, but they're all super easy, and sometimes she lets you leave class early. After the class ended she invited us to one last meetup in the Labyrinth and bought us Insomnia cookies.

They are a nice professor and I really enjoyed the class but attendance is mandatory. If it weren't for extra credit I would have a B+ they are strict on attendance and you can't make those points back so make sure you come to class. But overall nice person would take again but I would come to all the classes.

DONT TAKE HIM FOR UNIV!!! Each class was long and boring! Instead of moving on, he would stand in silence until someone raised their hand to give random examples - even if it meant waiting in awkward silence for MINUTES. A lot of univ professors let their class out early, but it seemed like Foster intentionally drawled out class to make it meet the 1 hour 15 min mark. He also scheduled the course to last the ENTIRE semester when a lot of univ courses end by early Nov (when he had no topics to teach he still scheduled class and let the class choose the topic - as if that's a better option than just not having class). He seems like a nice fun guy but definitely not when it comes to grading. He keeps track of attendance and takes off 5 points for each class missed and he is harsh on grading assignments for no reason considering this is univ.

Course: Really easy course, the material is pretty boring but actually helpful if you ever wonder how something works or need to find something within UMD. Attendance is mandatory. Really easy A as long as you have common sense. Breakdown: - Assignments (18), 100%, all very easy, some quizzes, some activities for exploration, just complete them and do well and you’re good. Professor: Talks pretty loud, so the first class takes most people by surprise. Really nice guy, loves when people participate and contribute to the conversation at hand. My class was from 3:30-5:20, but the latest we ever stayed in class was until 4:30 PM, most times it was only 45 minutes. Really prioritizes mental health and the well-being of his students. Would recommend him to anyone!

Yeah, I had her for my UNIV100 class, which I know, is not even a real class and has little say over what actual work we have to do. What others have said is pretty much accurate in my experience, she does have a bit of an attitude at times, isn't always the clearest about assignment expectations, and does treat her students like children at times (I believe she normally teaches elementary students so I don't think it is on purpose). Overall, she has some flaws but she is an acceptable instructor for such a basic (and required) course.

Foster was a personable, funny, and understanding professor. I wasn't a fan of how heavily participation was rated in this class. It is only 1 credit, a class about umd, but I ended with a low A partly because I didn't show up to one class without emailing to get excused. Unfortunately, this class was painfully boring, and I dreaded going. Loved Foster's as a Professor, but hated the class.

UNIV100 is a great course to be able to meet other people and learn about the traditions and resources given at UMD honestly. I honestly thought it would be boring at first, but then I thought differently because it actually made me feel more comfortable and confident with what is going on around campus. Professor Cadet is a friendly teacher and has a sense of humor that can bright up the room. She is open to answering questions and the information she gives is interesting, including the guest presenters she brings in to class. Don't stress about this course, it'll be an easy A. Have fun with it, but I'd say I enjoy having this professor teaching my class.

Clay was a great teacher for UNIV. He is very understanding, fun, kind, and personable. He is very approachable and will always listen to any problems. He cares about your overall academic success as a student and is just a good guy. He goes above and beyond for his classes to ensure we have guest speakers from campus resources to help educate us on what UMD offers. He's open to all students, even if they are not his students. He is also a G and threw us a pizza party for the last day of class. If you are a CMNS major. I would take Clay for UNIV100.

Catherine and her TA Lily are both very sweet, caring, and genuine people but compared to other UNIV100 classes my class had significantly more work than others. They were also very harsh graders to the point where my lowest class was this one for a short while which is insane for a 1 credit class. They are very picky with their rubrics, even when I was at home sick and missed class they took off so many points on one of my assignments (which I wasn't given instructions for). Catherine was very forceful too and made the class very awkward to be in. I understand that we need to talk and interact with each other but some of the conversations felt so weird. She also would make us start 10 minutes before class actually started, so don't show up early. On the last day, she made us do a stupid skit which was so uncomfortable for everyone. I did genuinely learn a lot of resources and stuff from this class but specifically, her section was so much more work and so picky compared to my friend's sections.

Would not recommend taking him because his workload is quite higher than almost all other UNIV100 courses and the assignments and his grading can be unclear. He works at STAMP and does give you a lot of useful information about the university. Pros: - Decently easy course overall - Most of the work is at the beginning of the semester - He works at STAMP and can give you a lot of useful information about the university - Leaves insightful comments on your papers Cons: - Tries his best to keep everyone involved in class but the tension in the room is so thick you could cut it with a knife - His workload is quite higher than almost all other UNIV100 courses - The assignments and his grading can be unclear - Difficult to approach - There are a lot of papers

Barker would sometimes get overwhelmingly obnoxious over topics in this course about how to get through college during your freshman year. Very strict about phones or being on your laptop while he's rambling, and will press you about attendance or if your late.. he'll also encourage you to wear a mask but do not take offense to that. If you just complete all your assignments and pay him no mind then you'll be fine. He does have a participation grade he adds at the end of the semester so you should be good if you say something here and there. He probably would want you to say something every single class to receive a 100% but it is not worth it..

DO NOT TAKE HER. UNIV 100 is supposed to be an easy class, given that it is one credit. However she makes this class a bigger deal than it is. I was had situations where I could not do assignments and she only gave me 50% on them knowing my situation. I am taking a comp sci class and an econ class and those teachers were more lenient than she was. Like it is an orientation class yet she makes big deal over it. The class is useless and the she thinks that her is legit. Get another teacher for UNIV 100. Literally every other teacher that I heard teach UNIV takes late assignments.

As an advisor, she knows her stuff and is always happy to give feedback. As a professor, she can come off as aggressive when talking to people sometimes (especially if she has to repeat something). Specifically, I remember a student was confused about a university policy regarding registration. She spoke condescendingly towards the student and was borderline berating him on why he didn't understand it. Thankfully, we had a really nice TA who made the class bearable and occasionally fun.

She's a super sweet lady. She paid for my class to take us bowling on the last day of class and often brought candy for us in class. If you had any questions about UMD or your schedule she was happy to help. Super easy class, just show up and turn in your assignments (completion grade) and you will get a 100. Highly recommend taking any class of hers, though if she doesn't fit your schedule any UNIV100 teacher is fine.

Great teacher, very straightforward with his work. The only reason I have an A- and not an A or A+ is bc I missed a few assignments, but that was my fault. He is an easy professor and you won't regret taking him. As I said, just do the work on time and participate in class and you will be fine.

Very nice instructor. She did a great job in an online semester and gave tons of great information. However, I don't recommend the class if you're well prepared about the requirements of your major and how to get by in UMD. It was a lot of redundant information.

I had her for UNIV 100 and ended up with a 95. Some of the assignments were busy work but that's just the nature of the course nothing in particular that she did. The assignments do require effort and you can't bs them. Take her for a semi-easy A. She's nice and responds to emails quickly.

DO NOT take UNIV100 from Mrs. Low! She is awful with explaining things and very vague in her directions. In addition, she said I would receive full participation points and still took off points with no explanation. Under my impression, she is very dishonest and unfair.

Although this class was super easy, Mrs. Payne-Gassaway was bad at showing up at the correct time, bad at responding to emails, and difficult to get in contact with overall. The class Elms paged was not update from the previous semester, so dates of assignments became confusing (nor did she explain what the upcoming assignments were until they were due). Classes were long and boring, but she gives credit to anything, even if turned in late.

UNIV100 doesn't really matter but take it with her if you can because she seems to be one of the easier UNIV100 professors. For example, there was a scavenger hunt activity that all UNIV100 sections do and some people told me they had to run all over campus and find people but for our class, we just had to go around stamp and find locations. Also, she buys chick fil a for the class a couple of times in the semester. It doesn't really matter who you take UNIV100 with but if you can, take it with Perrigan.

To be fair, I'm really only giving a low rating because of the class. She brings food most classes and she's really nice and seems caring, but her "lectures" are pretty much her telling the class life story. As long as you do all the assignments on time and show up to most classes, you'll do fine. But good luck trying not to die of boredom in class. In terms of UNIV100's course difficulty, I would give it a 1/5, because it is a really easy course, where all you need to do is show up and do a few short, simple assignments for an A.

She was very unprofessional and didn't understand that some students needed time to adjust to the new website assigned to the course. She graded incredibly hard for a course that is designed as a transition to college. She's a Resident Director so technically she isn't a professor and it shows in the way she runs and directs class.

Extremely nice lady, she's there to help. She's also my BSOS advisor and she's very helpful there too. However, for a 1 credit class, there is wayyyyy to much work. Also it's kind of ironic because we had to do these time management projects that completely wasted like 5 hours of my time. Anyways, you'll have no problem with her, and class can be fun. I made a lot of friends in class.

Kim is funny and doesn't want to grade all the bs work as much as you don't want to do it. Basically in every class you sit down, listen to a guest speaker's presentation, and sometimes reflect. The final project? Anything you want on something we did in the class. The last class? A pizza party. 'Nuff said.
