Before I start, I think it's important to clarify that SLLC499D had 6 professors teaching it. My assignments weren't graded by Dr. Frisch (they were graded by another professor) so my feedback is limited to her lecturing and the persona she portrayed in class. For what it's worth, I heard that she reported lower grades to the registrar than what some students earned on Canvas simply because, holistically, she just didn't feel that they deserved [insert higher grade earned here]. So, as an example, if you had a B+ in the class according to the syllabus, Dr. Frisch would take the liberty to report your grade as a B to the registrar simply because in hindsight she overall didn't feel like your work was at a B+ level. If this was mentioned in the syllabus, fine. But it wasn't. I would consider this an abuse of authority that is sensitive to bias on if she likes a student or not. Now, Dr. Frisch is very knowledgeable, but incredibly condescending. She has no issues interrupting your presentation to give you direct feedback and laughing while she does it. She'll also turn to the rest of the class in sharing this feedback with you, making it feel or look like she's gossiping with the gals (ie your classmates) as she does so. Luckily she never did this to me, but I felt secondhand shame watching it happen to others. In sum- Very, very smart. I can't rate her any higher than 2 stars because of her attitude/negative treatment of students. |

Professor Frisch is a great professor if you get on her good side. Since our class was online, she only made us meet once a week. No midterm or final exam, and only one assignment every two weeks. She made the class very reasonable and enjoyable as long as you paid attention and tried your best. A bit of a tough grader, but nothing crazy unreasonable. |

Professor Frisch was really nice, but the class was pretty challenging. Our class was not good at participating (either because it was 9:30 AM or because the readings were in Old-ish French and hard), so she really tried to encourage more discussion. She seemed to care a lot about the students and changed the grading scheme to emphasize homework more after the first midterm, which had a low average grade. She also made the midterms slightly easier when we expressed our worries about our grades and gave us the essay prompt ahead of time. Overall she was a good teacher and I feel that I learned a lot from the class. |

she's evil. she showed up late to class if at all, gave worthless assignments that encouraged plagiarism, totaled points incorrectly at the end of the year... if you have another choice, take it. |

Good class overall. Madame Frisch really knows her French literature (she's the director of graduate studies) and can really bring out some ideas that aren't so easy to grasp at first. Her 1 point online quizzes consist of 25% of the final grade. All you have to do is get 25 points even if that takes 30 or 35 quizzes. The midterm is definitely doable especially if you understand the review sheet. There are two essays (one worth 20% and the other worth 25% of your final grade) that are graded extremely hard. However, you get a chance to redo them for a higher grade. I assume the final is the same format as the midterm. Both are worth 15% of the final grade. Overall it's a good introduction to French literature from a teacher that really knows what she's talking about. However, since she really knows the course material so well, and can present it so well in French, not a lot of students feel comfortable participating with their broken French when trying to answer deep questions about Montaigne or Voltaire. |
