Not as bad as the reviews make him out to be. He's kinda intimidating and makes sort of passive aggressive comments if you miss class or say something wrong, but he's honestly chill if you go to class and participate at least once per class. He gave a pop quiz which was bad once, but again that was only once. If you do what he wants, essays are easy to get a good grade on. Also the readings are long but if you just skim them you'll be fine. |

Mahalel is a pretty good teacher when it comes to yiddish, though this class was definitely intimidating at first. From day one, he spoke entirely in yiddish and rarely spoke in english, only using english to provide clarification when absolutely needed. The immersive atmosphere of the class definitely helped with learning the language though, and I felt far more confident in speaking and understanding it after only 4 months. He’s also really funny and is a nice guy, and understood we’re all students who also have a lot going on in our schedules. Homework was typically very light and mostly consisted of a few pages of reading and fill in the blanks in the supplemental book, with a very short essay every few weeks also being required. Would highly recommend you take this class if you have any interest in learning yiddish or just interest in yiddish in general, though don’t expect it to be easy to pick up on at first. |

Incredible professor! He has an excellent teaching style, and he's very adaptive in class to ensure his students fully understand what he's teaching. Barely any homework other than reading a couple to a few pages was ever assigned. He's also hilarious! |

I don't know why his reviews are so bad. Class was interesting and not too hard, yes there were lots of long readings but as long as you skimmed the material and chimed into conversation at least once a class it was fine. There are 2 short reflection essays and 2 papers with no exams or homework outside of the reading. Overall an interesting course and a pretty understanding guy. Definitely give it shot if the course material interests you and don't let these reviews make you turn away. |

If you are looking for a teacher who treats their class as if it is life-saving material and you are a Ph.D. student, this is your guy. |
