Are you interested in Phenomenology? Sensecapes? Historiography? If so, take this course. I must have completely misunderstood what this class was supposed to teach, because I am beyond confused as to how this class matches the Testudo description. Lecture is a mess. 2nd week the prof pulled up a slide deck with -I kid you not, 3 slides, 5 bullet points each- and yapped for an hour. Wouldn't be as terrible if the content was interesting, but it leaves you feeling like you heard a lot, understood a little, and learned nothing. Attend lecture, but miss a discussion? You're screwed. Went to discussion? You're a *tiny bit* less screwed. Prof assigns weekly 'discussion assignments'. Each assignment lacks detailed instructions, and the grading criteria is borderline incomprehensible. Completed the assignment, but misunderstood the instructions? C. The readings are dull, tedious, and long. Average of 50 pages a week. I spend more time reading / trying to understand these assignments, than I spend on my UPPER LEVEL STEM CLASSES. Maybe this class is better with someone else, but I doubt it... Just don't take this class. |

Signed up for this class under John Sprinkle. He probably dropped the course and was replaced by Prof Woehlke. In the first lecture, he pulled up a blank slideshow with three one-word bullet points. The content is all over the place and makes no sense. The major grades in the class include a pop quiz (10%), three exams(30%), and a final project during finals week (25%). The pop quiz is the most absurd thing ever. If class attendance drops below 80% you get one, meaning that 10% of your grade is based on chance. Better hope that you understood all of the random readings that he assigned for that week. The readings are just complete word salad, and super dense. If you were looking for easy gen ed look away, please. |

Lecture attendance is mandatory, a dip in attendance usually means a quiz but we have avoided one so far. The lecture material itself is pretty interesting but can get boring at times. Towards the middle of the semester, the use of Powerpoint slides went away and it was pure lecturing (no slides posted). However, most of the information isn't complex and is more conceptual or historical examples of urban development and analysis. Discussion assignments aren't bad and are usually just reflections and analysis of a local community. Exams are 5 full essays in 75 minutes, which is a lot but doable. |
