Honestly these bad reviews are just from students that do not want to be students. His class is very easy and counts for so many gen eds which makes it so worth it. It is also a genuinely interesting class that I learned a lot from. There are weekly discussion assignments (the discussions NEVER went the whole time), 2 papers, 3 exams, and a final project. He would give a quiz if attendance fell under 80% which was annoying but they were never too hard and I only ever had 2. The hardest part of this class were the exams because they were on paper, closed note essay questions but I would say if you go to class and take notes on his lectures, look at the study guide, and have a decent understanding of content you will do very well on them. The TAs also know what will be on the exams so in the discussion before they give you hints on what to study. Ngl I also only ever skimmed over the readings. I ended with 98 in the class and did not work very hard for it, I simply went to class, did the work, and studied a bit for exams. For how many gen eds this gets you, it is a very easy class that you just have to show up for and be a student. Professor Woehlke is also a very nice guy who is willing to work with you and answer any questions you may have. He is also very passionate about what he is teaching making his lectures engaging.

I mean the class itself is not that bad so far (only 1 exam in) but the quizzes are wierdly difficult (before they used to be whenever attendance dropped, now its EVERY SINGLE LECTURE), they will be super specific from the reading (like what does this line mean from like the chapters upon chapters of readings he gives per week). Another thing is that he RAISED THE CURVE, its usually a 92-93 for an A however this class is a 94, honestly not worth it for the 3 gen eds this class gives. Ngl I feel as if this class would actually be kind of interesting, however he is one of the worst lecturers that I have had, super boring and spends the whole lecture on terminology. The exams are 5 ESSAY QUESTIONS and for someone like me that has essentially stopped writing by hand, it was actually painful. My hand started cramping and from my sheer grip on that pen, I felt as if this was the last written exam I was ever goiong to take. And they are pretty long exam questions, at least for like 3 of the 5 questions they are going to be like 2ish pages in the booklet. He says that there are no wrong anwswers or whatever but half of those questions were literally super specific, and I feel like there are WRONG ANSWERS at least for some of the questions I put. I might update this review after I get my exam back (2 WEEKS AFTER WE TOOK THE EXAM) and if I actually did well then I might not drop this class. I might actually add a star for how easy the class might be. The discussion portion of the class is not bad, but genuinely itll depend on what TA you get, they do all the grading the exams, worksheets, and papers, my TA takes points off for some of the stupidest things and it genuinely irks me. My gpa is slowly decreasing by the second because thinking this was an easy class, I am also taking Orgo 2 and bsci 330 with this, I genuinely cant spend any more time on this class than I already am! Maybe if you are taking 12 credits and like 1 is stem then sure take this class because there will be actual studying you need to put in but pls if you actually kind of care about getitng good grades and such dont take this class.

This teacher is so BORING. I was supposed to have John Sprinkle and it got changed last minute which SUCKS because the cutoff for an A is a 94 for a GEN ED. Some TAs are harsh graders. I would not recommend if you're looking for an easy gen ed.

Great professor. Very organized lectures and course, so you know what to expect the whole semester right from the start. Amazing GenEd, I would highly recommend this course for any major.

Got a lot of hate because people initially signed up to take this with a super chill professor and last minute got switched to him. Honestly, at first I also was nervous and didn't want him but he's honestly great. Very engaging lecturer in my opinion and the first exam was very easy with little review. You do have to go to class because if less than 80% shows up he assigns a quiz. That has only happened once and the quiz was very easy. I've never once done the readings and gotten by in exams and quizzes because he does a good enough job of lecturing the material. And honestly, it's kinda interesting. Best bang for your buck for 3 gen eds. Honestly really minimal work. A couple of papers and exams and just show up to discussion to get the one assignment of the week done. Not like a given free gen ed which is why I think everyone is hating but still super minimal and manageable.

Lectures are mandatory and he assigns a quiz if 80% don't show up. Yes it's true that there are little to no slides and yes sometimes he goes on a yapathon but if you come to lecture with an open mind it's not that bad. He assigns readings each week for the content which are pretty long and wordy but pro tip: you don't have to read them. He does a good job of going over the topics and the main ideas in lecture to the point where the readings are like optional supplement material. Discussions are usually just the TA's explaining the project that's due this/next week. The exams are open-ended essay questions but he gives out a study guide a week before the exam that basically lists the exam questions in verbatim. I don't know why the reviews are so negative. No it's not a free gen ed class but if you put minimal effort whenever the projects/exams come around it's a decently easy class and worth it for how many gen ed credits it fulfills.

Are you interested in Phenomenology? Sensecapes? Historiography? If so, take this course. I must have completely misunderstood what this class was supposed to teach, because I am beyond confused as to how this class matches the Testudo description. Lecture is a mess. 2nd week the prof pulled up a slide deck with -I kid you not, 3 slides, 5 bullet points each- and yapped for an hour. Wouldn't be as terrible if the content was interesting, but it leaves you feeling like you heard a lot, understood a little, and learned nothing. Attend lecture, but miss a discussion? You're screwed. Went to discussion? You're a *tiny bit* less screwed. Prof assigns weekly 'discussion assignments'. Each assignment lacks detailed instructions, and the grading criteria is borderline incomprehensible. Completed the assignment, but misunderstood the instructions? C. The readings are dull, tedious, and long. Average of 50 pages a week. I spend more time reading / trying to understand these assignments, than I spend on my UPPER LEVEL STEM CLASSES. Maybe this class is better with someone else, but I doubt it... Just don't take this class.

Signed up for this class under John Sprinkle. He probably dropped the course and was replaced by Prof Woehlke. In the first lecture, he pulled up a blank slideshow with three one-word bullet points. The content is all over the place and makes no sense. The major grades in the class include a pop quiz (10%), three exams(30%), and a final project during finals week (25%). The pop quiz is the most absurd thing ever. If class attendance drops below 80% you get one, meaning that 10% of your grade is based on chance. Better hope that you understood all of the random readings that he assigned for that week. The readings are just complete word salad, and super dense. If you were looking for easy gen ed look away, please.

Lecture attendance is mandatory, a dip in attendance usually means a quiz but we have avoided one so far. The lecture material itself is pretty interesting but can get boring at times. Towards the middle of the semester, the use of Powerpoint slides went away and it was pure lecturing (no slides posted). However, most of the information isn't complex and is more conceptual or historical examples of urban development and analysis. Discussion assignments aren't bad and are usually just reflections and analysis of a local community. Exams are 5 full essays in 75 minutes, which is a lot but doable.
