Probably the most boring professor I've had in the business school. The dude assigns like 20 homework assignments throughout the semester, and over 30 classwork assignments over the semester. Most students do not attend his lecture after the first few weeks because it turns into a snooze fest. Most of his teachings are time fillers and are not in the same format as the midterms or finals. He is pretty disorganized and randomly adds or removes assignments throughout. Only reason he gets 2 stars is because you basically get to choose your own grade in the course if you complete all of the 50 assignments.

Great guy, very generous and understanding. His teaching style can border on boring at times, but it's much better to pay attention so you have an idea of how to do the in class practice problems. Definitely does not have a typical accounting teaching style, but if you apply yourself, you will learn, if you're just looking to coast by for a grade, you can but thats at your educational cost. Im looking forward to having him again for 422!!

He is very kind and really wants to make his class as stress free as possible. He also focuses on us actually learning how to apply skills. His class has no number grades and instead grades everything based on completion. He allows you to retry assignments that did not meet his expectations and is always open to questions. He tries to keep class lighthearted and funny. On the last day of class he bought the whole class scratch offs. His class structure is always being improved and takes student feedback very seriously.

Do you get to pick your grade? Yes Will you learn anything? Probably not Just because the class is an easy A doesn't make him a good professor. He does not do a good job of teaching. The structure of the class changes every week and the work he assigns is not helpful at all. The lectures are even worse. He is all over the place and teaches whatever comes to his mind. There were so many times he would have us do practice problems and he wouldn't be able to get the correct answer. His classes are disorganized and I would not recommend if you actually care about learning.

He's a very nice guy and his lectures can be informative. He also has some good experiences from the business world and good stories to tell. But he can often be a bit scattered when it comes to lecturing. It seemed like he wouldn't really know the material prior to coming to class and often had answers that didn't match the answers provided by McGraw-Hill. I'm sure he knows his stuff but it would look better if he knew how to work through the problems to get the correct answer for each lecture. Additionally, he seemed to change his methods many times throughout the semester. We started with a weekly self reflection and then that wasn't working so we tried a Google sheets plan, which he stopped asking for after a month or so. I think Professor McNamee would benefit from a structured course planned ahead of time and to stick with it. Finally, he used a new approach to the class this semester called "ungrading" where all of the assignments are not graded and there are no exams and whatnot. The only thing is you get a final grade at the end of the semester based on the amount of effort he believes you've put into the course. This is evidenced by your effort on the midterm and final "self-assessment", how many assignments you completed, how often you came to class, etc. This creates a low stakes environment that is focused on learning, which I enjoyed. Each of us submitted the grade we believe we deserved (I assume most of us said we deserved A's), and he kept 65% of them, increased 13% and decreased 18% (4% was TBD at the time of writing). I would take a course with Professor McNamee again because he's a nice guy and I think as he teaches more and more he will become less scattered and develop a solid framework for his classes.

He's new to UMD in the fall of 2021, so I don't think he understands the cadence of teaching here yet. Really smart guy but not a good professor. tries to teach accounting without the use of journal entries/t accounts?? basically taught the whole course to myself

Despite claiming to have lived in America the past 11 years, he has an elementary grasp on the English language. He speaks in endless, incoherent sentences. The whole class revolves around memorizing the two problem types he provides each month. If you have a photographic memory this class is a breeze. If you're used to working out problems logically, good luck learning from him. I have learned a lot this semester simply because I have had to teach myself *absolutely* everything. I have not missed a class. I'd say avoid but he's the only choice for intermediate II. Don't buy the textbook, it's online for free and he had not used it for the first 3 exams.

Not my favorite teacher ever, but I would take him again. The only grades in the class are his 4 exams, all worth 25% and none of them are cumulative. This means absolutely no homework or outside work which I loved, but could be a pain when it came to studying. You really only had 2 examples to learn the concepts from because there are no answers provided for the textbook. He goes through all of the information that you need to know by going over packets in class, just make sure you understand the logic of it instead of memorizing the steps. Sometimes he will switch things up on you for the exams but if you actually understand what's going on in class they shouldn't derail you too bad. I didn't realize the importance of going to class, I probably went to 3 the entire first half of the semester so I had a 50 something percent at midterm. He has a good method of weighing your highest and lowest exam grades, though, so after studying like crazy for the last 2 exams I ended up with an A-. He means very well and is a really sweet man, my main complaint is that he should provide more practice. Overall you can expect to get a decent grade in a class that is known to be difficult.

Professor Rose is a good professor and a nice lady. She cares for her students and if you show her your willing to work, she will do her best to help you. However, i think the prior reviews about her class being extremely easy and the exams being the same as the homeworks is very outdated. This class is not an easy A class and you have to study hard to get a good grade. The class has 6 hws (one dropped), 6 quizzes (one dropped), 3 exams, and a cash flows exam. The best way to study for exams is to study the homework problems because some of them are mirrored in the exams but they are definitely not exactly the same. However, she is pretty clear on what you need to know before each exam. I would recommend to attend the class as much as possible because she reviews practice problems during class and that's probably the best way to learn the material. She can be quite monotonous but its not exactly the most exciting subject so I dont blame her. Overall, she is on the best accounting professors at Maryland so I recommend you take this class with her.

Let me preface by saying that I took this class a couple semesters back and decided to just get around to reviewing him. Kim is a nice guy, and he knows his stuff. It is hard to pay attention to him because he is hard to understand, but if you do pay attention then you are going to do fine. He also has some funny stories and anecdotes to add. The tests are practically based off the notes, and his homework assignments are literally past exams so if you go over those you will do decently on the exam. The reason I say decently and not that you'll ace it is because he throws a curve ball at you in each exam. So you have to study the homework assignment, and then prepare for an unexpected trick question that he puts in that distinguishes the A students from the B students. If you aren't prepared for that question and you mess up another portion, you are doing poorly on the exam. BMGT311 is a tough course regardless of who you take it with, so I don't think Kim is any worse than any other professor for this course, but you may want to consider whether you are prepared for those kinds of tests.

This was definitely the hardest class I've taken at the business school. The course material was pretty dry and Professor Finch's teaching style wasn't really effective for me personally. But I think he was a good teacher and he was very willing to give help outside of class and spend a lot of time explaining things I didn't understand. It's not the most fun class, so be prepared to put in a lot of work, but in the end it's worth it and Finch can give a lot of help if you ask for it.

This is a complicated review. I took Finch in Spring 2013. He was the hardest professor I've ever had at UMD, and I've never worked harder for a single class, nor been happier with the B I earned. It was not easy. But the thing is, I've never learned more in any class at UMD. Finch forces you to learn the material, because you cannot do well in the class unless you do. And it's not just out-of-class learning (though you do have to read the textbook on your own); Finch spends a lot of time in class going through problems similar to those you'll see on the tests (and, more importantly, on the CPA). He makes sure you really know what he's doing, and takes questions better than anyone else I've ever seen. The trick with him is to actually do the readings in advance, and actually participate in lectures. If you do, you'll learn more than in any other class at UMD. If this doesn't sound like something you want, you should probably take a different professor.

Okay, seriously the people who are posting below are basically admitting that they are lazy students. Kim is an adorable professor who really knows the material. He distills the information to digestible bits, even if he is sometimes a little hard to understand. The lecture style is old-school, but as long as you pay attention, his course is the best-kept secret in 311. Very manageable as long as you dedicate the time. THE EXAMS COME RIGHT FROM THE NOTES. You hardly have to read the book, no required homework, and the exams are just like the practice problems. If you expect to take 311 without having to put in the work, then you're in college for the wrong reason.

I took Finch in the Spring of 2011. Professor Finch is a GREAT professor. Don't let these other reviews fool you. Of course he has high expectations for students and his exams are challenging. And I think that is how it ought to be. You are paying a tuition to learn not to just get an A. Finch forces you to learn the material. Your responsibility as a student is to DO THE READING. Your Intermediate book is NOT a decorative element. It is meant to be read. When I mean read, I mean read EVERY page not skim through it. And do the homework problems he assigns even though he doesn't grade them or check it. Hold yourself accountable to getting an education you paid for. He can't possibly cover EVERYTHING in the book during lecture so it helps if you've read the material beforehand and done some of the problems. That way, you can have questions as he is explaining the material... not just sit there gazing into space. People complain about his exams being too hard and undoable. I don't think they were. They were challenging but the exams are doable. It is possible to do well on them. I did well on them. When the average was a 50. I was getting an 88. If I could do it, you can to. Just work hard, believe and hope in God! If you take Finch and you are prepared to buckle down, discipline yourself and read that book, you will be very glad you did. You will discover Accounting to be much more interesting than you could have possibly ever imagined and you will leave that class learning so much. And you will get an A. That A will be the best A you've ever gotten and you will be proud of your accomplishment. It is a great feeling!

Professor Rose is one of the best accounting professors that I have had in the Smith school. She is extremely straightforward and fair with her exams. Although she can go a bit quickly through the lectures, keeping up and reviewing her practice problems gives you everything you need to get a solid A in the course. At the end, you will be surprised with how much you actually learned throughout the semester after taking her class.

Would be a 5/5 but her cash flow exam for BMGT311 was very much unfair. Miss one line and you lose 20% of your grade. Still got an A though because the rest of her exams were fair. Her quizzes are usually very difficult, but she drops the lowest one and they're only worth 50 points so it's not too big of a deal. Good professor overall though, much better than Mostow for 310, and definitely worth taking for 311.

Oh Mike Finch. He truly didn't care about making sure his students were comfortable with material. He got mad when we didn't read chapter beforehand, so he punished us by only half teaching the subject. His exams were hardest ones I've ever taken. The averages were horrible, and insisted that he was not going to curve course (even though in end he did). This was a complete nightmare of a class, and a whole ton more stressful than 310. For sure take with different Professor.

Honestly, you have to read and attempt to understand the material before you arrive to class. If you do, you will find his lecture actually helpful. Being the second semester taking Mostow, i do see going to class useful. He is very knowledgeable, maybe not the best professor but he does know what he's talking about. If you have a question, the best option is to approach him personally. His test are parallel to the material, they are hard but if you're going for the CPA then you'd be prepared. The homework takes a long time to do but if you do them before he finishes lecturing a chapter then its easier to get the hang of it. Overall, accounting is a hard subject don't blame the professor for it!!

Professor Rose was the best accounting teacher I've had at UMD so far, with the possible exception of Bulmash. Pros: Class is structured where if you do not read the book at least a little before, you're going to be a little lost. She goes over some basic concepts but does ALOT of examples which is really helpful, but if you cant follow it can be quite confusing. She does not lecture with powerpoints (NO Accounting teacher should) so its very helpful to come to class, pay attention, and write down every example you can because her exam questions are verbatim from the homework and textbook and class examples. She is EXTREMELY straightforward- will literally post a list on BB of what content is on the exam and the exam is EXACTLY that no curve balls and nothing unexpected. She is approachable for questions and explains things very well, also what you need to know on CPA exam which is helpful. She gives ALOT of partial credit - I got step one of a 25 point question wrong and therefore got every step wrong, but she went through my work and recalculated with my wrong answers and only took off one point when most accounting teachers take off 25 for a wrong bottom line. She also does not give multiple choice exams which is so helpful - its all open ended and some matching of terms thats usually very easy. Cons: She can be a little dry and monotone, but leases and pensions and error corrections isnt exactly the most interesting topic to teach.. understandable. Class consists of: 2 midterms, 100 points each. 1 Cash Flows Exam (reproduce cash flow statement) 50 points, Quizzes 50 points (take 6, drop 1), Homework 50 points (do 6, drop 1) and a noncumulative final worth 100 points. I felt like I learned A LOT from Professor Rose and will probably take her fraud class just because she teaches it and I really enjoyed her teaching style. Recommend 10000% for both 310 and 311.

do not take any class with Oliver Kim. He is a smiling korean guy and will teach you NOTHING. I took his BMGT311 class in spring 2010, paid attention in class, and felt like i still didnt know what he was talking about. If you... 1. have lots of money, dont mind to waste some 2. dont want to learn anything about accounting and dont care about the grade (even a "C" or "D") please take BMGT311 with Oliver Kim. not a good professor. does a lot of theory, no examples. moreover, he likes to see students do poorly so he gives only 2 examples thus giving you nothing to work with. come the exam he'll add a twist of some sort and you'll have no idea how to do it because you never practiced. the book doesn't help. going to his office hours doesn't help. going to class doesn't help. you have to print out your class notes and he often makes typos on them. there are 2 midterms and a final each worth 32% then 4% is homework. you don't learn a thing and i knew a lot of people who literally got less than 20/32 on the exams. little to no curve. take it with someone else if you can

Please if you care to learn anything...DO NOT take a class with this man. He is about the worse prof on campus. He walks in cracks jokes for 30mins that no one even gets, and then he enjoys to see people fail. The Dean and Chair have to review his crdentials or capability. His teaching startegy is RIDICULOUS. You would regret every bit of his class....I promise you...Many of my colleagues are retaking it, just cos he's so bad....I hope he leaves soon. His class was kinda frustrating. You practically know what's gonna be on the exam because it's so similar to the homework. He gives you notes with 1 or 2 examples, so with the homework you have 3 practice problems for each chapter to focus on. However, on the exam he'll have something extra that wasn't in the examples but it was a small memo in the notes. I just didn't like the guy, he always seemed to be happy about us getting stuff wrong. Also, he never taught any theory, just technical stuff, many of us didn't know why we're doing what we're doing. I wouldn't take him again.

Strengths Professor Rose is a great teacher of accounting. She explains the material clearly and lets you know what will be on the exams/quizzes as well as what's important for the CPA exam. At first she seems really intimidating, however she is a really nice lady and most students like her. The class isn't too much work, some homework assignments, quizzes, and exams. Don't skip class because it's a lot of material and just reading the book would make it harder to learn. I do recommend reading the book though to study for exams and do the problems in the book to really learn the material. It's a hard course but she makes it easier by being a good teacher. Drawbacks The only real drawback is sometimes her voice could be monotonous which made the class boring, taking it at 5PM didn't help.
