This guy does not help at all. HE DOES NOT WRITE ANY MATH EVER, HE SIMPLY SHOWS SLIDES. HE IS BAD BAD BAD |

Beware it may seem like he cares about the students but he doesn't. Exams are unfairly difficult and are grade harshly. |

Lectures are confusing and he barely goes through problems. The only time I learned anything was in studio where the professor was more helpful answering questions. Top 3 of worst professors I've ever had. Exams are resonable if you put in enough time studying. The entire class is a struggle so I wish you luck if you have this professor. Labs are very laided back and can be completed in the lab time if you want to do that. |

He presents the slides in a nice format to give you an overview of the concept and posts annotated notes after class usually within the week. He sometimes gives ungraded quizzes at the end of lecture which reinforce the concepts presented. The lectures he gives are a good introduction to the studios and homeworks, where those are the real opportunities to learn the content for the exams. He could give more examples and plan less tedious labs. |

Took ENME332 in spring of 2023 with Bao Yang and Siddhartha Das. Had a completely different experience than the previous reviews here. Exams were very straightforward and extremely fair, and the practice exams they released were spot on as far as problem relevancy and difficulty, so pay attention to them! Exam grading was weird, but overall very lenient. Some small conceptual mistakes and mathematical errors were graded oddly harsh, though. Lecture is where most of the material is introduced and studio is where you apply the theory and go through much more advanced problems. Dr. Yang does read off lecture slides, and sometimes it's hard to understand him or the point he is trying to make, but he tries his best and always had a great attitude. Homeworks had a few gimmies, but we're generally about on par with the studios in terms of problem difficulty. Labs were simple enough, easier than 331 labs. I found Bao Yang to be easily accessible, respectful, and kind outside of the classroom, and he didn't make this course harder than it needed to be. |

Dr. Riaz is probably my least favorite professor at this university. I don't think he cares about his students or about how well they understand the material. The lectures feel robotic and hardly worth going, but sometimes he doesn't post lecture notes until up to a week after the lecture (after homework is due), so you have to go and scribble down the equations that he wrotes. Most of the time is spent deriving an equation that you'll never use and then doing an example that's either way too hard or way too easy and you don't get anything out of it. Working/ listening through the studios and doing the homework are the only way that I learned any material for this class. |

Riaz is personally nice, but I wasn't a big fan of his teaching methods. Endless derivations in heat transfer are less useful than lots of examples so we can understand what kind of approach to apply to a given situation. I also didn't appreciate that we were told three different grading schemes by each professor and the TAs. Please communicate with each other! I don't have anything personal against Riaz but I'd avoid any of his classes in the future if I had a choice. |

Riaz is a good professor. His lectures aren't super exciting, but he is clear in his explanations. The final, both midterms, homework, and labs are all worth %20 of the grade, which made the final much less stressful. Homework can be a bit difficult, but the TAs are helpful. There were two labs and both were quite easy. Exam questions are much easier than the homework. |
Siddhartha Das
ENME332 Expecting a B+ Anonymous 08/04/2022 |
Dr. Das is an old fashion type of professor where he uses very little lecture slides and does example problems. For the first half of the semester, he led just the studio section then took over the lectures as well in the second half of the semester. In studios, Das did a quick lecture recap then went over a few example problems which were helpful. Das is unorganized when working problems but he hands out and post the solutions. If he runs out of space, he will write wherever there is space available, so if you look away, he may be in another place. The board looks unorganized, but if you follow along with him, it will make sense. Aside from being unorganized and old fashioned, he does care about teaching the content and gets frustrated when students do not attend studios and lectures. He does answer questions, just have to be clear with what you are trying to ask. Das does have an accent which can be difficult to understand at first, but after a week or so, you can understand him and what he is saying. Das comes off as bad, but if you stick with it, he will be manageable. |

Dr. Yang did not do much to help students learn material. His lecturing style consisted of him reading off strictly from lecture slides with lots of information. These slides are posted ahead of time, but there is a lot of content to cover. At the end of the slides, he added a practice quiz question, but since there was a lot to cover in the lectures, most people did not know the answer. Most of the learning came from studio section and not lecture. |

ENME332 Expecting an A- Anonymous 05/27/2022 |
Das definitely cares a lot about the students succeeding in the course. For this semester he taught studio and the second half of the course. He was definitely a very good teacher and he explained the thought process behind everything he did during studio. He wants everyone to do well and will more or less tell you what is on the exam. He is pretty loud as well and does not like it when people talk. The studios are very helpful, but his lectures are pretty useless because he covers everything in studio in a more efficient way. Lectures are just derivations and boredom while studios are example problems with full explanations and derivations. He will explain anything and everything, just ask! |

I wrote a review for my fluids professor because I thought he was going to be the worst professor I've ever experienced. Unfortunately I was very wrong after taking Bao Yang for heat transfer. only reads off slides (spends little time on a slide with lots of info), gives 2 homework the night before exams (material isn't on the exam... and normal weeks only have one homework due), and his TA's are even worse (act like their teaching at gunpoint and they would get shot in the first 5 minutes). this man is horrible |

I got a B- or B in ENME331 (fluids) when it was virtual. I really struggled in that class, I tried office hours and doing textbook problems, but everytime I saw a new problem I had no idea what to do. I think my error was a) taking it online (people cheated and I struggled to pay attention) and b) just trying to understand/memorize the problems rather than the actual concepts (like definitions of terms and what assumptions actually mean for the problem). I applied this in heat transfer and it really helped. He reads off slides and sometimes answers questions, its a fifty fifty sometimes he acts like stuff is obvious because he doesn't feel like explaining. I got a 65 on two of the three exams and was fine. If you are going to take either of these classes, my advice is to actually just go to the studios. And then redo the problems afterwards sometimes. I only did this sometimes and still got an A. 90% of people skip them (because they are usually at inconvenient times and maybe because Professor Das talks so loud its basically yelling lol) but they are much more helpful than Riaz's lectures, and the problem sheets from studio aren't posted until right before an exam but it's helpful to have them as practice before you do the homework. Also actually do the homework even though they give you the solutions- the solutions are sometimes wrong and you will fail the tests. That being said, I felt somewhat let down by Riaz. Nearly everyone was good about masks, but he didn't remind people to pull up their masks above their nose or not to eat or drink during class. During office hours if I was stuck even when I did everything right he just said oh you'll figure it out. His lectures were sort of dry, but more interesting in heat transfer (which was likely due to pandemic). I also heard about an issue with an ADS exam where there was a misprint and the professors didn't respond right away, but my friend said they got it sorted out it was just annoying. In fluids the grade point averages were "higher than normal" and he was pleased, but didn't seem to realize this was due to people cheating on the zoom exam. Overall an okay professor, you'll pass if you try your best even if it doesn't click for you. The heat transfer labs were much easier (and more helpful for understanding concepts) than the fluids labs. He wore a mask while lecturing btw, used a mic so you can hear him, and did some other things right like let us use zoom rather than HonorLock and even moved exam dates around when people had conflicts. So pretty accommodating in that sense. The exams were easier than I expected based on the other work we did in class. |

He only teaches studios (not lectures), and can be very loud and abrasive, but is a good teacher! He can explain things very well if you have the ability to ask the right questions amid his seemingly angry demeanor. Honestly I wouldn't have passed 331 or 332 without this man. |

Lectures are pretty useless as they're all derivations of equations. literally 100% of my learning in his class came from homework and studios. But I'll give him 2 stars because he's kind and patient and encourages questions. |

Prof. Nomeli was very organized during the course, and was able to answer a variety of different questions that showed his deep and broad knowledge of the subject. His explanations were adopted to the level of students, and he always made sure everyone understand them. |

I liked the way Prof. Nomeli taught ENME332 with enthusiasm every day and kept the students engaged in the class. I can say without a doubt that Prof. Nomeli is one of the best instructors I have ever had throughout my entire educational career. |

I actually found DiMarzo's lectures very useful unlike the other reviews here. He really wants students to succeed in the class and is very receptive to student concerns. The midterms and final were very fair. If you did the review problems supplied by the professor before the midterms and finals you were very prepared for it. My TA Daniel Bae was also extremely helpful in the studio periods, which basically involved solving example problems for the class. So many peopl skipped the studios but they were the most helpful part of the class. |

Lectures are not always the most useful material, but most can be learned from the homework. Exams are generally easy with high averages, also graded very leniently. |

Lecture can be difficult to follow because his voice is pretty flat and the course itself has a fair share of derivations, but once he's done slogging through that he gets straight to what you actually need to know. He definitely knows what he is talking about and is very willing to help students. Homework can be pretty brutal, but the exams and labs are laughably easy. |

Great professor. He can make the material a lot easier to understand, and goes through solid examples to make the class more intuitive and applicable beyond the class. I only wish he taught the lecture as well as the discussion sections. |

Was unable to learn from his slides, ended up just skipping lectures and reading the book in order to learn the class. The important focus was being able to find the example in the book that the problem is similar to and find out which table you need to look at. |

Probably my favorite professor at UMD. Can make heat transfer a fun class, yes some days are filled with boring derivations, but he keeps the class interesting. In studio is really where he really shines. He has more time to explain the topics and he really breaks down all of the concepts so they can be understood. On quizzes and exams if you have the right thought process but not the right numerical answer you will usually only lose one point if any as DiMarzo harps on knowing the principals behind your decision. Also, he never chose an overly complicated problem for the exams, quizzes or final. I really enjoyed having Dr. DiMarzo for this class he can be a pretty funny guy as well. |
Jungho Kim
ENME332 Expecting an A ricki_ravioli 05/22/2010 |
Kim is a pretty oldschool teacher. He used his tablet pc to write out his lecture notes which can sometimes be messy. Maybe he's gotten the hang of it by now. His grading was pretty fair. Tests were hard but whatever the raw grades were he made the average a B and one standard deviation up/down a A/C. As usual we had a pretty tedious group project, but we didn't have to learn some awful program like fluent. |

To be fair, my grade would probably be closer to a 1.5 than a 1. The class is brutal, plain and simple. His expectations of the class as far as the exams and (to an extent) the homework is extremely high. The class will feel relatively mellow until the first exam (the fact that nobody scored a perfect and the average was a 33/80 should tell you something) and will really come heavily down in the last two weeks. The design project was given to us the week of Thanksgiving (that week being the only time given in class to work on it... my discussion fell on a Thursday so I wasn't able to do it) and the rest of the discussions spent in a monotonous 2 hours of straight problem solving, none of which will help you on the homeworks or reviews for exams. Grades were... harsh for the project, to say the least. If you're good at iterating, you should be fine in the class, frankly. He expects a lot of it on the first exam. Just don't expect his help in anything. |

ENME332 Expecting a C- Anonymous 12/13/2009 |
Dr. Kim shows no interest in having his students succeed. I visited his office hours on multiple occasions and felt as if he was unwilling to help me learn the material. He dedicates most of his time to his research and often had guest lecturers as a result of his frequent "out of town trips." He spent a lot of time bragging about his research for NASA. He put down University of Maryland saying that their undergraduate engineering program is just as good as any other. Averages on examinations were very low 50% which reflect upon the quality and structure of his curriculum and teaching style. He has very poor handwriting students often have to ask him to read his notes off the board. Additionally in the last week of school before finals, we had a lab/ lab report, a long hw assignment and a project due. |
