I honestly have no idea how I am doing in this class and its already November. Scott's grading system is very unusual as he doesn't use canvas/ELMs to update grades, he instead uses a "point" system but it seems like he gives a lot of opportunities to improve prior scores, so I do appreciate that. There are no exams in this class and he does not require attendance in his lectures, which are pretty boring btw. He does record helpful tutorials on almost every coding assignment which I find help me more than attending his lectures. Overall, hes a really nice guy and replies to emails/questions really quickly its just the class is structured kind of odd so I have no clue where I stand...

Scott is a genuinely good person who cares about his students and is passionate about teaching this subject. The issues i do have though is the lack of grading... we are already in November and i believe we have one grade in so far, with the lack of grading comes the lack of feedback, i have zero clue how i am doing. He is helpful though and is there if you need help with during his office hours. For lectures i tend to zone out and not learn, i feel the class isnt engaging enough to be motivated to want to learn the skill.

Much of the material learned was complicated, and a lot of the people in the class had a lot of advanced prior coding knowledge and were able to complete assignments without much worry. Professor is nice and willing to work with students, but grades haven't been updated as of after November.

Very nice professor, willing to work with students and help them. Assignments can be a little bit unclear, but he leaves them very open to what you want to do. He never really published grades, which made it hard to know how you were doing in the class. I think overall an easy grader

I'll be honest, I took him in the spring and it was only his second semester teaching. He was a nice guy but would always delay grading. The whole class had no grades until the day final grades were do. But his grading system is fair, lets say you miss one or multiple coding assignment, you have the opportunity to get a grade for them still if you show that you can implement the code in the next assignment. He grades off a fundamentals list, so technically you can submit the final project and make sure to include everything in the list and get an A (that's lowkey what I did) but I don't recommend it, since you literally have no other assignments to back you up if you do that.

Professor Jackson is a very supportive and patient instructor. He goes out of his way to reassure students and provide clear guidance in programming, which I found incredibly helpful. His explanations are always thorough, and he takes the time to ensure everyone understands the material. However, there is a significant downside: he never returns graded assignments, no matter how many times we ask. Despite his frequent apologies, none of us received any feedback on our assignments throughout the entire semester. This lack of feedback started from the very first week and persisted until the end of the term, which was quite frustrating. If he could improve on this aspect, he would be an outstanding professor. Overall, if you can manage without timely feedback on your work, you'll benefit a lot from his teaching.

Goated professor!! Scott is really chill and super supportive, it’s easy to tell he cares about his students’ understanding of the material. The workload wasn’t crazy, we had about 12 assignments throughout the whole semester (including the projects) and coding projects build off of each other. He had a system where your grades were based on how many points you score based on the course concepts, so if you didn’t score a lot of points for one project it didn’t matter because you could gain those points back with following projects. The only issue I had is that we would get literally no feedback on your projects unless you asked, which was fine in the end because Scott would tell you exactly what you need to work on when you go to him. I agree with the other comment saying to use his office hours when you need to!! He’s very happy to help!

I DO NOT recommend taking this professor. This was his first year teaching this course which is understandable but he provided zero feedback throughout the entire semester. We did not get anything graded and had no grades put in as of the last day of classes. He kept on promising that he would grade things but never ended up doing so. So it was very difficult to know how you're doing in the class. If you do take him, I recommend going to his office hours because they were helpful. He's very nice when you talk to him one on one but the whole course was very disorganized. It consisted of 3 word count projects and consolidation projects. The lectures are recorded.

Do not take this professor. He is overall a nice guy but if you have anxiety about your grade do not take him at all. He does not release your grades until the final week (exam week) and gives you little wiggle room to raise your grade. Again, he is a very nice guy but just the overall structure of this class was too much to handle on top of other classes because you don't know if your failing or passing the class until it's too late.

Doesn't update grades during semester its the last week of school and I haven't had one assignment graded. If you want to learn python he does a pretty decent job in class and there are GSS oppurtunties to get better understanding outside of class(though I have never attended a session). He seems like one of the teachers that will give you a good grade based on effort. Other than the lack of knowledge where i stand on this class, the professor is understanding and workload isn't crazy.

There were many things that went wrong in this class. Many of the assignments were not graded until the seventh week of school. Several of the assignments were not working properly due to broken links. He randomly assigned a final exam out of nowhere even though it was not in the syllabus. He never made an announcement about it and only told a small portion of the class. He was upset about students not attending class even though attendance was optional, and many felt as though they were not getting any value from attending. Slow to respond to emails as well. The class is very dull and there is no class interaction. He rushes over topics quickly. TA's go over practice problems on Friday's which was a great thing about the class. However, this professor was not attentive towards his students and would often get frustrated and annoyed whenever we asked questions. I would highly suggest getting a different professor.

Dr. Chan is absolutely amazing when he teaches you Python. He makes sure that everyone understands the concept by frequently giving us exercises in lecture to practice what we'd learn. I'm glad I'm the first person to write a review. Professor Dempwolf is a really awesome professor, just good all around. He's very kind, he listens to his students and their concerns and makes sure everyone is heard. His lectures are lengthy and he does talk a lot but if you care enough to attend you will learn much. There were supposed to be three projects total this semester, but they were cut down to 2 because of time constraints and I was fine with that. However, I don't know how other students feel about it. The first project was worth 75 points, unfortunately, the second was worth 175 points and is 20% of your grades. If you keep up with the class, even if you don't do too well on the last project your grade will still hold, you can still finish the class off with a low A or high B, With that being said, the projects are far from easy, but Prof. Dempwolf will definitely help you in any way he can. He gives you most of the code for the projects and even eliminates some parts if students ever get too stuck. On top of that, he always give extensions and just cares for what he does. Out of all the INST126 classes I can say his is the easiest and the best. So, please take him. It won't be easy but it will be easy enough to allow you to pass!

Took this course online with this professor and I recommend her. She is an easy grader but sometimes takes a while to respond to emails. The class structure is really nicely set up where you learn something in lecture, then actually have an assignment where you practice it by coding so it allows you to understand it and it's easy. The online quizzes are pretty easy and you can use your notes. The final was a group coding project but you get lots of time to work on it and it's not too far out of reach.

Professor and TA's are really nice. However the class is pretty boring. Lectures are long and not super helpful. Assignments are due at such weird times and can be pretty annoying. Also, not many examples of how to code are given as a resource so the projects and PCE's can get kind of hard. It is easy to lose points. Overall, the class isn't the greatest and since it's required for the major I would suggest trying to get a different professor.

Usually the first day of class was used for learning and the next class we would apply this learning to in class projects. He is very knowledgable about programming. Because of the asynchronous nature of the course, the video lectures become very important for projects and homework assignments. However, sometimes there are gaps between lecture and assignments, leading to googling different coding aspects and topics to fully understand how to do the assignments. I will say, i didn’t find the projects very difficult because of the help you can get from the TAs and the actual coding not being difficult.

This professor is great at what she does, she is very knowledgeable and will help you whenever you need it! Earlier in the semester, the assignments were a lot easier to follow and the short videos she made helped a lot when doing the assignments. I will say that you have to take initiative in googling things as it IS an async course, you literally signed up to be online and basically pace your own learning. She is very lenient about due dates which can be some students' downfalls if they don't keep up with the assignments due each week. There are no exams, there are coding assignments each week, and 3 projects which you should ace if you come to office hours. I must emphasize GO TO THE PROFESSORS OFFICE HOURS!!!!! The projects can be challenging and intimidating when you first read them. THERE IS NO REASON TO LOSE POINTS ON PROJECTS SHE WILL LITERALLY TELL YOU WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR CODE AND HELP YOU FIX IT. I didn't go to TA office hours that much because it seemed like one of the TAs wasn't really clear about what he was doing. But the other TA, Rony, will actually tell you what's wrong with the code and fix it, however, he does have some inconvenient times so it might be hard to make it there. Overall an easy class if you utilize the resources given, actually watch the short lecture videos, and GO TO OFFICE HOURS FOR PROJECTS!!! Take her if you have the chance.

Idk what the person below is bashing the professor for. I barely interacted with her, however, I believe Professor Carrie is genuinely is the type of instructor we need. Her class is asynchronous, so the lessons are video lectures (they are from 2020 so not recent, which would probably be my only thing I wish she'd change so it's more recent). However, I think they cover what is needed to be known and I am having a good amount of fun. Something that I admire a lot is her late policy which is the most lenient one I've seen. As there are assignments due each Sunday, there's a good amount of stuff to do considering I have other classes, so I haven't turned in things on time. That being said, the way the class is set up is that there are two main deadlines with one being in the first half of the semester and one being in the last week of the semester, and we can turn in assignments before that main deadline without getting points docked. In addition, we get to redo assignments for full credit until that main deadline comes. You are set up to get an A in this class.

Professor Lindeman is a great person that wants to make beginner programming an ease. The online format of her class does require personal initiative to go and watch the videos she posts or attend the online class. Her extensions on assignments (not big projects) are generous. Professor Lindeman's office hours are very helpful in understanding the code and what the assignment is asking. Something problematic about the class is the availability of her office hours being only twice a week and the TA's office hours sometimes having an unreliable schedule. But if you come to the class and ask questions/learn there, then this shouldn't be an issue. Another negative part of this class is the inclusion of "stack traces" in each coding assignment. These stack traces were maps of all the data points in a program. the rules surrounding these stack traces took a while to pick up on and the the stack traces could be very tedious to complete. A guide on how to do them in various instances would have been helpful. Overall a great professor that i benefited a lot from and would recommend.

Professor Linderman did a great job on explaining python to people that are new to programming. If you have no prior experience to programming, this is the teacher for you, being someone that already knew a great amount of python before taking the class I found the lectures to be quite useless but they are packed with good content for those that are new to the language. She brings in ways that would allow for the students to learn better, it would be a 4.5/5 if I could solely due to having late responses when emailing her, and her grading was quite harsh.

So I had 335 with him as well, and after reading a lot of the reviews here I can definitely understand why people feel negative about him. Personally, I never had any issues with elms assignments or him being responsive to me even though I am a pretty lazy student. I would definitely agree that 335 was questionable at times as it's own class, also the bronze falls simulation didn't really seem to be worth the time we put into it, the scoring system and limited moves made very little sense. A lot of people struggled with 126, and he seemed totally willing to work one-on-one with students. I personally worked on coding with him at least 3-4 times and he was only harsh once (but he was right). He tried his best to make sure I actually understood why things worked and I appreciate that.

Professor Lindeman was really fantastic! She explains Python and coding in an approachable way, so if you don't have coding experience it's still easy to understand and learn. Her office hours are really helpful, and we often review material in class and do classwork to practice. The class is structured this way: introducing a new concept through recorded lecture and a quiz, then the next lecture will review that material and we will do problems/exercises with small groups to practice it, then she'll go over the problems and the answers. Then we'll have an assignment that's usually writing a program involving what we learned in class. The class was online, and lectures were recorded. Additionally, Professor Lindeman allows us to submit/re-submit assignments and quizzes multiple times to be re-graded, which was really helpful and motivated me to practice the material more or wait to submit when I better understood the concept. As a result, this class was not stressful for me since I knew that I could always improve upon my previous work. The only things we can't resubmit/submit late are the 3 projects. The project details are given ahead of time, and Professor Lindeman will help look over our projects and debug things so it's not too bad either. Overall, I enjoy Professor Lindeman's approach to teaching and enjoy her class a lot!

Dr. Chan has a real passion for teaching. He explains things in such a way that makes Python a walk in the park. I have previous programming experience so I can't speak for everyone, but Dr. Chan models the class in a way that focuses less on achieving a good grade, and more on how a person can think and work like a programmer. His lecture examples really helped with both assignments and projects. I will say that the last two projects will seem a bit harder at first, but I really believe that if one really dives deep into the material that Dr. Chan provides, one really can succeed.

She has a great personality and really cares for her students. Her teaching is mainly centered around creating labs so students can get hands-on python experience. No final, just a group project.

If you had previous coding experience then you will probably do fine in this class regardless. Professor Kartchner is personable and often extends deadlines, but she is a very poor professor. The class is definitely an after thought for her. Her lectures are lazy and she does a very poor job explaining concepts and often forgets to explain basic stuff( often citing she forgot we are first time programmers/ or that she is a JavaScript programmer not Python). Her lectures started out “just okay” and went downhill as the semester progressed. Additionally, for 2 weeks prior to the exam she told us pandas and matplotlib ( a whole 2 units)were going to be on the exam. Only for her to tell us a day or two before the exam that those units were not going to be on the exam. So she can be pretty disorganized. Lastly, deadlines for assignments were often extended because most of the class had no idea how to do the assignments. If you are a first time programmer, I would recommend taking someone else.

Joel has a passion for helping students understand the material. Is more than helpful to try and figure out issues you may be having, but also emphasizes the importance of being able to figure out a solution on your own, even if you have to "google it"
