Special Topics in Data Gathering and Analysis; Investigative Skills: Finding and Cultivating Sources

Research methods appropriate for journalists take many forms, including knowing how to find, obtain and analyze public documents and government data and records. This course concentrates on researching, finding and developing the people who can tell you things about their intimate lives or the workings of businesses, institutions and government that can't always be found through documents. You will learn methods to approach and interview people you have never spoken to before, how to create trusting relationships with people of different work cultures and how to convince sensitive sources to open up and tell you things that will lead to the best stories.
