Special Topics in Data Gathering and Analysis; Great Works of Investigative Journalism

In this course, we will read and analyze the great investigative journalism of our time. We will reverse engineer investigative articles in order to identify the author(s) research and reporting methods so that students will be able to use these in their own work. Students will also be required to put into practice several research methods we explore for the midterm and final assignments. The practices will include a wide range of reporting methodologies, including immersion, building and cultivating lists of people (sources) with useful information, creating an original database of unique information and crowdsourcing.
