This is a hard class. It's not going to be easy- but he makes it bearable. Just go to office hours and really pay attention in class- skipping isn't an option if you don't like teaching yourself. THE TEXTBOOK ISN'T REQUIRED IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ IT. He'll provide a digital copy if you ask anyway. He doesn't use WebAssign, but the homework he makes is incredibly difficult (though you can work in teams). He grades fairly, is very down to earth, and will explain ANYTHING you ask- he won't move on if you don't understand it.

Math141H is difficult, but Aris explains the material well. He is understanding and patient with questions and other concerns. The lectures are always very clear and relatively easy to follow if you are paying attention, and he goes back over material if the class is not understanding. The homework is sets of challenge problems that are due every three weeks, but they are worth a good percentage of the grade, which is nice because it means that the exams and quizzes are weighed less. The class itself definitely requires a significant time commitment per week to do well, but I would chalk that up to the material rather than the particular teacher. I would definitely recommend his class.

One of the BEST math teachers you can take at the University. He is kind and caring for all of his students. He provides homework extensions when you ask and answers your questions with no shame attached. There was a total of 3 exams comprising of 2 midterms and 1 final, each weighted the same. There are 1-2 weekly homework assignment(s). There are a handful of quizzes that he prepares ahead of time. I suggest not to sleep on the final, as the grading is split among TAs and teachers within the department, thus grading might be different compared to the 2 midterms. I highly suggest taking Dr. Gruber for ANY math class.

DR G IS AMAZING!!!!!! He is super kind and cares about his class. I was in the honors Calc 2 so it made it easier to ask questions (smaller class) which he always took time to answer. The quizzes were always straight forward and we even had a few group ones, plus he drops one. The WebAssigns were annoying but he doesn't choose them so whatever, but he dropped two!! Best part for sure is the exams: two midterms, weighted each 15% and the final was also 15% so it didn't destroy your grade if you failed (I got a 55 on the final and still got an A-). He also had bonus points for the midterms to bring your grade up and he curved the final by a bit too, bringing me from a B+ to an A-. Take him 100% he is such an incredible professor!!!

it's hard to find a professor as caring and reasonable as dr. G. a great teacher and human who looks to constantly listen to students and make the class as fair and understanding as possible. everyone in the class liked him a lot too. 10/10

Dr. G was overall a great teacher, very caring for his students, and willing to spend time during class and after explaining the harder concepts. He also tries to make the class as easy as possible, at least during my class he was trying to convince other professors to make the final fewer questions to make it easier. During exams, the reviews were very similar to the actual exams and he didn't try to give the hardest problems or trick questions. Also, he gave us an extra credit opportunity for both exams which you could get 4% back. He also recorded lecture which was nice. A couple of things I didn't like was that he did very few practice problems during the lecture only 2 or 3 after going through definitions, he often chose the hardest types of problems to work through instead of going through a lot of examples. ***Also please study the honors final practice paper (about 12 questions) there were a few on the final that were exactly the same and only the honors sections got it.*** On the topic of Math141H vs Math141 I would definitely go with honors. The tests were much easier, we had extra credit, a smaller class size, and only 3 classes a day. Also, I knew many people taking Math141H with Sana Jahedi and she was also really good, often honors professors are better because they care more. We did have a quiz (half of them were group quizzes) every Wednesday which were kind of hard if you didn't keep up well with the material. But if you make friends who are smart it is a lot easier. One more thing, the grade distribution for our class was awesome, an A was 90% and this was with the average in our class being around a B+.

dr. G is one of the best professors at UMD. he is truly the man. it's extremely rare to find a professor as caring, logical, and dedicated as Dr. Gruber. super approachable guy, makes all his content/resources helpful/accessible, and works with the class to make sure everything is fair and understandable. you will not regret taking a course with the goat himself!

Very good professor on the whole. Very willing to answer questions and made a point to provide intuitive proofs for any major theorems/formulas that came up in class. All lecture notes were uploaded to the class website, although the lectures themselves weren't recorded. For each exam there was practice material analogous to what would be on the exam, and quizzes and exams were graded fairly (arithmetic errors incurred minor deductions). I strongly recommend if you want a professor who concentrates more on student understanding than rote proficiency with the tools of calculus.

Dr. G is probably the best educator I have ever had in my life. He truly cares for his students and always is asking the class if they have any questions. Since I was in an honors class, the class size was very small which made it much easier to ask questions and work with people. He does multiple group quizzes which help boost your grade. He is a very understanding guy., so if there are any personal conflicts with assignments, he is very accommodating and open to figure something out. Regarding the classwork itself though, it is a HARD class. Calc 2 here is a very hard class in general since you're introduced into the topics very quickly and with advanced examples. If I didn't have Dr. G as a Professor I would definitely be failing the class. As long as you dedicate A LOT of time to studying, you should score decently on the exams and quizzes. Many other people in this class had high A's and some B's, but I struggle with math so the quizzes and exams were harder in my opinion. If you aren't the strongest math person, I would recommend a regular 141 class just because Dr. G doesn't curve tests. Overall, if Dr. G is an option for any of your classes, TAKE HIM 100%. Genuinely such a great person and would definetly take one of his classes again.

Dr. G is one of the best math teachers I have ever had! He genuinely cares that his students do well in class and is willing to spend time in and out of class to ensure this. His teaching style is very active and involves a lot of discussion with other students to understand the intuition behind concepts, a strategy that significantly improves a student's understanding of a topic. He is also incredible at explaining things and will gladly spend time diving deep into a topic. I absolutely recommend taking Dr. G's class!

I think Wiseley Wong is a decent professor. I failed the class, but it was definitely my fault and not his. He's good at lecturing and isn't too boring, I'd say he's your standard math professor.

I'm not sure why there are negative reviews here for Prof. Berhanu. I had the pleasure of taking him for MATH140H and MATH141H. He is an excellent professor whose exams are very reasonable. Like any other class, if you put the time into practice and understanding the concepts, it should not be difficult to do well. Professor Berhanu himself is kind, willing to answer questions and explain things, and is very accommodating. Both of his calculus courses were very short of being "impossible to pass".

Professor Conway's class, despite being an honors level course, was one of the best classes I've ever taken. Professor Conway is very kind and totally willing to explain things again if students don't understand something. He is also very helpful in office hours if you go. He does go kind of fast in class so you might end up writing stuff down without having time to understand it so I recommend reading over your notes after class and making sure there isn't anything you need him to explain in office hours. Aside from that, he is a great professor and I would totally recommend him.

I had Professor Berhanu for MATH140H and for 141H and he was excellent for both. His grading is strict but fair. His expectations of his students are very high, but not unreasonably so. The class moves quickly, but that is to be expected of an honors class. Professor Berhanu is always available during office hours and does his best to get to know his students and make sure they succeed. If you're not willing to work hard on the material outside of class time, don't waste your time or his. If you take one of his courses expect a challenge, but expect to learn a lot.

Dr. Ibdah is a great guy and a decent professor. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He made himself extremely available to students, essentially offering anytime office hours as long as the student emailed in advance. Dr. Ibdah gave much harder exams than other professors, but is a lot more lenient with his grading, giving a good amount of partial credit, which was fair in my opinion. Dr. Ibdah's lectures are fast-paced and sometimes hard to follow if you get lost. He is happy to answer your questions but sometimes the answer will get you lost as well. I would recommend reading the textbook section he is about to cover before the lectures. I found this to be very helpful, I wish I hadn't just started doing this in the last two weeks of the course. However, I still enjoyed this class and I'm glad to have had Dr. Ibdah as a professor, and I found his class to be beneficial and feel like I learned a lot, despite getting a C in the class.

Wow. This was the worst teacher I’ve ever had. He really tries to teach the material but wastes 90% of class time proving theorems that you really don’t need to know. He often gave us homework’s on things we hadn’t learn yet and only changed the due date after o pointed this out ti him and the assignment was due. In other words, If you left the question blank and dIdnt use all your cengage attempts. He also loved to give us pop quizzes the second after learning new material, so If your the kind of person who only fully grasp the material that night after reviewing your notes, you cannot do well in this class. You would expect the honors section to do better than the regular section, but any section of 141 with Rosenberg is doomed from the start.

I took this course in Fall 2019 Pros: + Okay at explaining concepts. + He teaches based on the textbook, so it's a good resource to learn from. + Quizzes are open note and you can ask him for help, so they're not too bad. + Tests are fair. Cons: - Could be better at lecturing - Homeworks can often feel very and unnecessarily hard compared to assessments, which can be frustrating. They can take a long time to finish.

She explains the course material very well and is really understanding and helpful. For example, if you're having issues with hw problems, you can email her and she will respond quickly. She does go over some topics pretty fast but not in a way that makes it incomprehensible.

I would not recommend taking the honors version of math141 if you can avoid it. Dr. Bao was a brand new professor when I took him for math141H, and so I give him credit for trying to adjust to his new teaching role. However, he was not very good at explaining and his exams were really tough. Half way through the semester he stopped giving students partial credit on their work and that was my downfall. He curved really generously though because I should've failed his class and instead ended with a C. He's a really nice guy and I could tell he was trying, but overall would not want to have him again.

Justin is by far the best teacher in the math department. He covers everything you need to know in depth and focuses on things that each class is having trouble with. He takes it personally if his class does poorly on his exams and really puts in the effort to make sure they don't. That being said, his exams aren't easy but aren't impossible either. If you do the work and go to class you will do fine.

This teacher is really awesome. His notes are really great and organized so I have a sweet notebook for review. If you have to take Calc 2, Justin is the best teacher to objectively help you understand the material and prepare for the tests. I'm taking my final on monday and I'm nervous about it but I feel like Justin made me more prepared than any other teacher could have.
