RUN!! Take this class any other semester when he isnt teaching. He reads directly from the book and gives fair quizzes and hw, but when it comes to his exams, it is hell. Even though the exams are open notes, the questions are very complicated and sometimes covers topics that were not taught. He doesnt curve which causes the class average to be really low. Our midterms had an average of 50% which was too low. 17 people were in this class at the beginning of the semester and by the 2nd midterm, only 10. He gives the worst exams and his lectures are useful only for what he writes on the blackboard. He often covers materials which are not mentioned anywhere in the textbook. Writing his exams was the most difficult thing I have ever face, compared to his exams, MATH 410 is a joke. Take any other professor but him. |

Very smart guy and good at what he does. But sometimes he would skip "basic" steps that would leave the whole class confused and when asked about it he would say it was some 241 or 246 thing that we should be able to immediately decipher. HW answer keys also omitted a lot of work making it pretty miserable to study for the exams from them since you were relying on your work being right. Despite this, enjoyable class and I can say I learned a lot. Would 100% take another class with Stefan in a heartbeat, but he's no Justin :) |

Stefan lived up to the hype. His lectures were always useful, the homeworks were manageable and offered great practice, he would run through old exams before each midterm for review, and his exams were fair. For PDEs, you can't go wrong with Stefan. |

The professor was not organized at all, she was not prepared for class at all. And it felt like along with us, she was looking at the martial for the first time. Her lectures were boring as a result and the attendance showed it. She didn't have a clear syllabus or a schedule of what and when she plans to cover something. She relied a lot on the bright students in class to answer her questions, to move on to other topics. She does not even wait after class to see if someone has questions, she just exits the class quickly. The only thing good about the class is she drops the lowest two HWs, there's only one midterm and she's lenient with deadlines. |

Dr. Gholampour is an amazing professor. He really likes math and knows how to teach math. I really recommend him as an upper-level professor. |

I would give 4.5 starts if it let me. He is a very effective teacher, and the class is not too hard while still being useful. The only problem is his lectures can get a little boring. |

She is a really good professor. I recommend to take her class. |

One of the worst professor you can take, particularly for MATH462. You will have difficulty studying with his answer sheets, since either, most have typos or the wrong way to approach a problem. No need to go to his lectures, he just iterates what is said in the book, and explains it in a much difficult way then the book would. Just as reading the book, is like going to his lectures, you barely learn much about PDE. I suggest you watch videos on youtube, and get a different book that has more examples and better explanations if you have to take this course. |

I'm sure she is a nice lady but it’s really hard to follow her lecture. It's not just her accent. She teaches undergraduates like she teaches graduate students. I'm sure more than half of the class stopped listening to her after few weeks. I had to rely on my TA for everything. There is a quiz every week and she said they are from book problems but I've never seen anyone getting a perfect score on it. I studied hard every week and the highest score I've ever gotten was an 8 out of 10. There are two exams, the first one was a joke the average was like 83% but the second was 63%, and the final was 67% There are 5 matlab projects and they are brutal. This was my first time dealing with matlab and I expected her to teach us something but she never did. I had to learn everything from the book. She graded the first two projects but she never even bothered to grade the other 3. Final grades are in so I guess they are just not graded even though I spent so much time doing them. I agree with everyone else here. I don't recommend her but if you have to take her, never miss discussion. |

He was a good, but not great professor. He lectured quickly, but clearly. The material didn't make sense while he lectured, but it made sense when I looked at the notes after class. My main gripe is that he did not review at all for the midterms. Literally, the last class before the midterm, the only thing he mentioned about the midterm was that we were responsible for everything up to and including that lecture. Fortunately, the exams were not too difficult. Other than that, the class was not bad at all. The weekly homeworks (which he creates, so you don't need to buy the textbook) take maybe 2-3 hours, and there are no quizzes. The exams were straightforward; just do some practice problems the night before and you'll do fine. |

Von Petersdorff is crazy. I don't even know what to say. Read the description below (by the anonymous guy in AMSC466) for a detailed description of lecture, as hard as it is to believe that description is correct and there is no exaggeration. Tests: Were fair, and based on lecture material We had one test and one final, but we were supposed to have two tests. We took the test before spring break and got it back on the last day of classes in May. Homework: Was somewhat difficult, but we only had 3 homework assignments. This was also handed back very late, about 2-4 weeks after turning it in. Office Hours: If you want to learn anything you pretty much have to go to office hours, he is much less nervous while in office hours. If he wasn't crazy he would actually be a good professor. |

He has the neatest handwriting in the world and his lectures are very organized. He explains concepts fairly clearly. Homeworks typically took a long time to finish, and quizzes were usually relatively simple compared to the homework. However, his final was much harder than anything we had done for homework or quizzes so you really have to know your stuff for the final. |

This course is a hard course, the material is challenging but also very very useful. It is very hard for any professor to teach this class well. But Dr. Cerrai does a great job. Although she writes all over the board, she teaches very well. If you pay attention when she teaches you will be able to figure out whats going on. She goes over every detail and make an effort to do a good job. She also has a sense of humor and this makes the class a lot more fun. I could not make it to her office hours all semester, but she always found time to accommodate me was extremely helpful. Her exams were not bad at all she is a very easy grader. I would definitely recommend her, but just remember to attend class every time and pay careful attention. For a course of this caliber she is very good. |

Great professor - the class he taught was difficult and came with a difficult book, but for what we came with he gave out great notes and was easy to understand. Cool, chill dude |

This professor was awful. I went into his office hours to get help from him and he didn't explain anything. He clearly knows his stuff, but he cannot teach. I absolutely do not recommend him. |
Casey Cremins
MATH462 Expecting an A allie 06/04/2008 |
Cremins is a decent professor, but I had to teach myself from the book a fair amount. If you need to save money, you could just photo copy the necessary pages out of this book because it is small and you only use about 1/3 of it. Or you can get the 1st edition. Tests and quizzes weren't too bad, they were mostly based on the homework questions, so do all the homework and get help if you can't figure it out, and you'll do well. |

Professor Nochetto is not really the most exciting professor. He basically reads out of the book and assigns hw from the end of the chapter. Still, You will probably need help frequently and depending on his mood he can either be a complete jackass or very patient. For grading there were 3 tests, hw every week, and a final. Overall I would recommend this class if you are an engineer and have learned some of the concepts that are covered. Waves, Heat transfer, and other concepts from physics or transport process classes are covered. So if you already know the concepts its actually pretty interesting to see the math behind it. If you are just a math major, the math theory is pretty simple but picturing the concepts might be a little challenging. The only reason I got a B was because I didn't study and bombed the final to drop my grade. So as long as you make good decisions you should get a good grade. |
