Walked into this class expecting absolute hell based on my experience with ENES102, but tbh Prof Li is great. After a string of bad professors, Prof Li's teaching style is miles ahead of any other experience I've had. He does a pretty good job of carefully explaining examples and usually gave us everything we needed for homeworks. One thing I will warn is that sometimes he can be a little behind in teaching concepts, and sometimes he would teach a concept that we would see on our homework that day that it was due. I never really had an issue with this, but I would suggest taking a look at the textbook if you need further explanation, a lot of homework problems are similar to examples in the textbook! Oh, another thing, grading with him is extremely kind, and I would argue he is an extremely light grader with exams. Our exams were fair even if you got the completely wrong value, as long as you demonstrate an understanding of the general process, you are set to get a decent grade. |

Took him in spring 2024 and he is a pretty funny guy. His teaching style is weird and didn't post notes online but he was forgiving in which he allow custom accommodations on exams because of external factors. |

AWESOME!!! He is chill and funny and very knowledgeable and can teach super well. Having the prelecture, and actual lecture, videos posted makes it easy to look back if confused, and he does it so well that if you just pay attention then not much studying will need to be done for homeworks or exams. Also, his drawings make it very easy to visualize what is going on in problems. |

Professor Hans a very animated Professor but as long as you follow his instructions in lecture then the exams are fairly easy to do well on. |

ENES220 is an annoying class and it's going to be an annoying class no matter what professor you have. the homeworks are long and frustrating, the groupwork is weird, and the exams are hard. that being said, most of my complaints about this class have nothing to do with Beigel. He's funny and engaging and does a good job of explaining things. It's annoying that you have to watch lecture videos before class, but it also means that you're able to go through it as slowly as you need and replay it as many times as you need. I liked that he did practice problems during class. The applications of the basic concepts are usually the most challenging part anyways, and this lets you ask questions in class and get an immediate answer rather than emailing him and having to wait on a response. My only issue with him was his tendency to start and end class late, I would end up missing sometimes important information at the end because I had a class to get to. |

Biegel was a mediocre teacher, and for some reason didn't spend anytime explaining the spatial concepts and notation (the most grade-heavy part of the course) like the other teachers did. At some point in the semester I began attending a different professor's class, which was a world of difference. Calabro is a much better option, and contributed much more to my understanding of the class in three weeks than Biegel did in the entire semester. I ended up relying on the TAs, students, and other professors much more than Biegel, who didn't contribute much to my understanding of the content of the course. |

One of, if not the best professor I've had so far at UMD. The way he paced the course and also reinforced concepts with plenty of examples made the class really easy to follow. He also posts lecture notes which are super detailed and easy to follow. |

Broderick is super chill and he likes to connect his job to the topics in class which is really interesting. He does examples on the board and it really helps you understand the content better for the homework and the exams. The exams were pretty fair overall but the homework's were annoyingly long. I highly recommend taking him. |

Professor Calabro has been one of the most thorough and dedicated professors I have had during my time here at the University of Maryland. He is incredibly devoted to working through practice problems and clearly cares about how well his students retain the course's information. Some of the best lectures on campus and is incredibly easy to approach after/before class with any questions. Highly recommended. |

I really liked professor Bonenberger, his notes are very clear and he does a great job of explaining difficult concepts. He also posts an agenda and the lecture notes for every class which was very useful. The exams and course content were challenging, however, he does his best to make sure that his students succeed. If you are struggling, go to his office hours!! They are very useful |

ENES220 Expecting an A Anonymous 12/01/2022 |
The thing about Brodrick is that he expects you to know what you're doing. He teaches like it's your third time taking the class but it's good. He simplifies things, that are easy to picture, and with a little HW outside class, you'll understand the concept and be able to apply it to any questions. The exams are very fair, as long as you do the practice exams and look and the examples he posts, you'll be good. 1000% Recommend. |

Awesome professor. Really intelligent, and provides very clear and concise note for the class that are great for studying. Felt like his teaching style was good. Lectures would be posted and include an example problem every class that would be helpful to follow for HW and studying. While he probably is one of the harder graders for 220, the tests are absolutely reasonable. I would recommend taking him. |

Beigel is a fantastic teacher. While he occasionally was a little slow on posting notes, he was very responsive to students concerns. He occasionally makes jokes that some may find a little off-putting, but he does it all in good humor and truly cares about his students and making sure students actually understand what's going on in class. The one annoying part of the class was the pre-lecture videos we had to watch before class, but they did help me to learn the course concepts very well. |

Absolutely terrible professor. Just yells at you during class about the material and expects you to remember every word. He also doesn't give actually notes and then rants on in groupwork sessions about you need to do it his method or you wont get the problem correct. take another professor, he isn't worth taking for this course. |

ENES220 Expecting a B+ Anonymous 12/19/2021 |
Tom is an incredibly fair grader and an excellent professor who puts his knowledge of how the content is used in the engineering field into his explanation of concepts and their importance. At times some of the concepts came across as complex, but he reassured us that they really weren't and we just needed more practice and it would become easy. He was right, and overall his teaching, grading, and approach to engineering problems made him an excellent professor that I would highly recommend! |

ENES220 Anonymous 12/16/2021 |
One of the worst professors I have ever had, if you have any other options DO NOT take it with him. All of my friends in other sections go on and on about how easy this class is but all my friends in Han's section with me feel like we are drowning. His notes are incomprehensible, we've had whole lectures where he doesn't even fill up a single chalk board with notes so it all comes down to understanding what he is saying. He goes on long tangents about how he doesn't care what we think about an answer and we need to listen more to what he's actually teaching, we timed one of his rants once and it was over ten minutes. He also creates a very hostile environment towards students asking questions, getting visibly frustrated when students are struggling to understand a concept. A friend and I were trying to figure out a groupwork and we couldn't get it on our own so we called him over, he took one look at my friend's paper and yelled "this is shit, just draw the damn circle" while slamming his finger down on the table in front of us. He also isn't accommodating when you're sick, he has on more than one occasion shamed students who got covid and when I missed a groupwork he refused to give me more than an hour of extra time to submit so I ended up completing it from the waiting room of the doctor's office. TL;DR he spends more time talking about things that aren't class content, is super mean to students who ask questions, and god help you if you have the audacity to get sick, not worth your time other professors are way better. |

Mechanics is not an easy course. Most students have to retake it. I took it for the first time during the summer. Do not take this as a summer course under any circumstances. Pros: * No textbook is required. * Helpful lectures. The examples he provides are useful and similar to problems seen on the exam. * Equation sheet. He allows you to use both sides of a standard 8.5 by 11" paper. You are allowed to put *anything* on it. Examples, equations, whatever you want. I recommend creating your sheet digitally and then printing it in high quality. That way you can utilize the most out of both sides of the paper. Cons: * Long exams, not enough time. The exam problems are too difficult to be completed within the time allotted to the exam. You won't have enough time to solve each problem correctly. Focus on what you know, prioritize accordingly. Go into this class expecting a B. * Groupwork. The groupwork is horribly categorized, the problems are too numerous and too creatively difficult. Try to complete as much as you can before class, so that you'll have some progress to show during class. The only way you can solve these is with hints. So whenever you get stuck, ask your groupmates and then ask the Professor or TA, do not hesitate! |

This review is strictly based off of his online class as that is what people will be dealing with for the next semester or so. He was amazing in person, but lacks a little on the online transition. It was difficult to reach him, his lectures were released at 1am at night, and the first exam was difficult. That being said, he understood this and gave curves generously based on the struggle given to students. Extra credit opportunities were given and he consistently changed homework due dates based on the convenience of the class. His TA was great and usually the one people would contact. This was a summer class and was extremely accelerated so I imagine during the semester it will be easier. |

ENES220 Expecting an A Anonymous 05/11/2019 |
Beigel was an excellent professor who knows how to explain concepts better than most other professors. He has taught the course so many times at this point that he knows exactly what he's doing. He is consistently ahead of all other professors and therefore can take the time to tell you some of his best jokes or engineering facts. As long as you attend lectures (most of them at least), understand homework problems, attend his review session before exams (extremely helpful), and most of all take the time to make an equation sheet, there is absolutely no way you won't get an A in this class |
Peter Chang
ENES220 Expecting a B Anonymous 12/19/2018 |
Dr. Chang is perhaps the worst professor that I have ever had at the University of Maryland. The one glaring flaw is that he does not care about the joint nature of the keystone classes. The keystone classes, since they represent the baseline of knowledge needed for most engineers were supposed to be a uniform class among all the other instructors. Chang shows this the same level of respect that he shows his students, which is none. He will routinely brake from the shared syllabus, and go against what the other instructors are doing in their class rooms. He would not conform to uniform testing procedures, and furthermore whenever any of these violations were brought up, he would address them in the most disrespectful manner possible. During these periods he would not only disrespect the students, which plenty of other reviews have mentioned, he would disrespect the other instructors. From an academic stand point, he is not utterly hopeless, as it is clear that he is aware of the information. However, he is utterly incapable of teaching this information, never mind teaching it in a respectful manner. Several times during the semester he would embarrass and make fun of students asking legitimate questions, failing to due his basic responsibility as a teacher to educate his students. During lectures, when no one is willing to respond due to the fear of being disrespected by Chang, he would routinely say that if you don't want to listen to me teach, then don't come to class. So naturally students stopped coming to class, as it was not helpful. Chang decided that the syllabus, that only allowed him to have quizzes on Friday's if attendance is lacking, to start issuing them during the Monday and Friday sections. When this violation of the syllabus was brought up he simply refused to address it, and continued to violate the shared syllabus for the class. Do not take Chang even as a last resort. In addition to the issues I talked about above, his grading scheme is inane. Dr. Chang, despite university policy does not believe in giving out plus or minus grades. The simply reason for this was that he found it too difficult to draw the lines, so he just decided to ignore the lines. This too is another symptom of Dr. Chang's horrible lack of respect for his students and anyone who is not Dr. Chang Dr. Chang is not only the worst teacher that I have encountered, he is one of the worst people that I have ever had the displeasure of meeting, let alone being forced to be in a room for over an hour with. IF YOU HAVE THE OPTION TO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH DR. CHANG TAKE IT. |

My absolute favorite ENES professor. I had him for ENES 102 and 220. He explains things very well and his lectures are extremely detailed and easy to follow. Literally. This man has beautiful handwriting in chalk and is very organized. He does a ton of step by step examples in class, which were helpful for doing the homework. The exams were fair and straightforward. He gives practice problems from past exams with answers (but not solutions). They are very close to what will be on the exam, so do them! The ENES professors also always hold review sessions before exams and will go over all of the practice problems. Some of the exam problems required a bit of thinking, but weren't impossible. Some exams were definitely easier than others. |
Mary Bowden
ENES220 Expecting an A Anonymous 11/07/2016 |
Bowden is hands down the best professor you can have for 220. She is super nice, teaches at a pace so that everyone understands the material, and wants everyone in her class to succeed. She is very smart, but also super approachable. If you do the homework and put a little effort into the class, you should get an A. 220 builds on the topics taught in 102, but she goes over the concepts learned in that class before adding to them. She understands that you will not remember everything, and if you struggled in that class, she will help you learn what you need to know for 220. |

STOP. TURN AROUND. RUN. PF Chang the type of dude to throw a child at you to make you catch it so he can steal your wallet. COMPLETE lack of communication regarding project, horrible at answering questions,no curve, teaches you how to do the homework the hour before it's due, not clear about....anything. Ever. That being said, he has one of the best note-taking styles ever, he uses OneNote to take notes that are projected on the screen and immediately uploads all the notes after class. His notes are fairly organized and are the only redeeming quality about this professor. The book SUCKS so don't expect to teach yourself the material, although going to other teachers' lectures is always a viable option since exams and other graded things take place during Friday studio sessions. Unless you are very good at staying on top of everything very well yourself and teaching yourself from the internet or from friends, find another teacher!! |

Professor Bonenberger is an amazing professor for engineering statics, both ENES 102 and ENES 220. He writes everything you need to know on the chalkboard and goes over multiple examples for each topic. He is very helpful during the groupwork problems and isn't a harsh grader, often giving lots of partial credit. If you go to class everyday and take notes, you will do great in this class. His lectures aren't boring at all and the exams are very fair. Overall, he is one of my favorite professors here at UMD, I highly recommend you take him. |

Up until the week before thanksgiving, I would have given Beigel 5 stars. When he teaches, he is excellent. He explains things clearly, and even manages to make it entertaining. He engages the class, and makes sure you are not afraid of asking a question, no mean feat for a class of 40+. However, by thanksgiving, his teaching took a turn for the worst. Never have I had a teacher who is more lazy. By the end, he started class 20 minutes late because he was sitting outside the room, too lazy to come in. He can be rude too. He once ripped someones homework in half to entertain the class. One girl asked for him to do a problem for final exam review. He said he didn't feel like it a proceeded to tell a joke. He seems to care more about coming off as smart, funny, aloof, and all knowing. Instead, he can be off-putting, lazy, and inconsiderate. |

Unequivocally the best prof I've had at UMD. I don't even know how, though. He goofs off for the first 10+ minutes of class, and pretty much everything everyone else said, but when he gets to teaching... He says more with less time and words than any other prof, but you can still understand it; he's not just fire-hosing you with information. I'm choosing a senior elective based about 50% on the fact that Beigel is teaching it.... TAKE BEIGEL. Caveat: He's not for everyone. A friend of mine really didn't like him because he does more physical, visible explanations rather than derivations and proofs. I hate derivations so this was perfect, but not for my friend. |

ENES220 Expecting a C- DEVTEMP 07/18/2014 |
This semester, Dr. Han displayed high level of arrogance and temper that made some students, including me, feel uncomfortable seeking help from him. In addition, he and the TA's behaved antagonistically towards students who had shortcomings in understanding certain statics concepts (concepts which this class builds heavily upon). As for me, when I sought help, they shamed me for not knowing these principles; and to an extreme, encouraged me to drop the class, as they "were not here to teach statics". Furthermore, despite knowing that the grading scale on CANVAS was erroneous, and not reflective of our actual grade in the class, he deliberately left it like this and refused to correct the errors (the reason for doing this, I will never know). He is, nonetheless, very dedicated to the material. However, if you are ever stuck, then you are on your own. I was able to seek help elsewhere; but in the end, I barely passed with a "C." I don't look back on my semester with Dr. Han very fondly at all. |

Okay. I read reviews on Chang prior to taking his class and I thought, "what the heck. He can't be that bad". I was wrong. At first, I thought it seemed alittle strange that Dr. Fourney "sat" in every lecture and watched Chang teach us but I realized after talking to other students later in the semester that Chang was under review because his teaching was so poor. I wish Fourney had saved my class because Chang did not teach it well. Every minute he asks "do you understand?" And I want to say "no" but nobody answers anyway. Chang's idea of extra credit was assigning random problems at the end of lecture that noone rly knew how to complete and out of everyone who turned it in, one person would be picked at random and given credit. In addition, he literally did one practice problem about entire topics that were expected to be on the final exam (pressure vessels and 3D loading). One day I had to approach him because I missed a quiz because my bus to campus broke down and although the story seems fake it was 100% true. I didnt expect him to give me mercy but it was worth a try. He didn't even look me in the eye as I pleaded my case and just said ,"oh well we drop one". (He never dropped it) At the start of the final exam he ordered everyone to sit in alternating rows and in every other seat. It was impossible to do bc the lecture hall wasnt big enough but for 5 minutes he would not budge, making ppl rearrange their seating. All in all, he actually was the worst professor I've ever had and after my entire high school career plus 4.5 years of college (because of transferring and entering the engineering school) I got my first C in his class. That should tell you something about Peter Chang. |

he is a good person. I like him as a person. As a teacher, it goes back and forth. He doesn't really teach as much as he just shows examples- and sometimes he lies when doing the problems just to see if someone will call him out on it. So... now I'm lost in the class. Professor Chang is a downright shitty person and an even shittier professor. I have never been around an individual with less respect for his students. He has as much personality as a spiral notebook and is totally unapproachable. I would ask my eight year old cousin for help before I would ever go to professor Chang. Needless to say, I would give him negative stars if possible. Professor Chang often decides to institute his own methods into the lectures, making it even more difficult to learn. He is the Ratsie's Pizza of professors. He does the absolute bare minimum for his students and goes out of his way to embarrass them and make them feel totally inadequate. |

After the first day of my winter class with this professor, I had serious thoughts about dropping it. He did not explain any of the material required for the homework, assigned an absurd amount of homework each night (6+ hours), and expected us to know all the material for next class plus how to do the problem sets before we came in. I'm not sure why I am paying this professor to be honest. Not only does he fail at teaching, he uses a different textbook for his winter class than the required Mechanics textbook during the semester. He failed to mention this not only to his students, but also to the Book Center, till the first day of class. This made the textbook unavailable for another week out of a three week class that meets every day, thus forcing the students to buy it online and pay an extra $15 for overnight shipping. He uses methods I have never seen taught before that are ambiguous and confuse the entire class, making problems much harder than they truly are and does not understand students well at all. I would never recommend this professor to anyone and he should not be teaching. |

Professor Chang is the worst engineering professor at Maryland. I literally made this account on ourumd just to warn you not to take him. In my case, I had heard the horror stories about Chang, but took his class anyway due to the lack of flexibility in my schedule. If I could do it again, I would fight tooth and nail NOT to be in his class. Beigel, Bonenberger, any other teacher in for this class will be better than Chang. I'm not trying to blame my score on him, because I really don't like to do that. I admit I could have worked even harder than I did to earn a better grade, but this teacher, without a doubt, hurt whatever chances I had in some way shape or form on every assignment. For homework, he always teaches his way, not the books way. I had to go to office hours to learn how to do the homework at ALL, usually doubling the intended amount of time it takes to finish homework. For tests, if you put down wrong units on ANYTHING, final answer, scratchwork, anything, he'll take 10 points (a full letter grade) off your test. Extra credit was only presented in the form of a "real life scenario" noone in the class could complete. All I ever heard from other classes was "wow why are you doing it like that?" we all answer "Chang" and they instantly know, wow you guys are screwed. Again, I dont like to put the blame on teachers, but the C I got in his class HAS to be a 76-79 raw. He's not the kind of professor to curve in favor of anyone, if he curves at all. I could write all day about how much you SHOULD NOT take him, but I believe I've made my point |

Pretty easy class, didn't need to study too hard for the exams and the homeworks are not too bad if you work with other students. Beigel is a funny guy and a decent teacher. He wastes a TON of time at the beginnings of classes, so you can show up 10 minutes late and usually miss nothing. He allows a lot of freedom with the project, which is nice compared to what others have had to do (ie Bonenberger's classes). I can see how some students may have trouble since he does not really teach concepts, but in reality these students are probably not cut out to be engineers. |

One of the best professors in the engineering department. People complain that he only does one or two examples a day, but the examples he does are exactly what you need to know he explains the examples thoroughly, showing each step. He does bs for most of this class but he can afford to because he's not teaching you the stuff you don't need to know. Pay attention in class and study his examples before the test, you'll be fine. If you want a teacher who goes the full time doing pointless examples and proofs just because it makes you feel like you're learning something, don't take him. I also took ENES102 with him (received a B). That said, Dr. Bonenberger is an absolutely phenomenal teacher, even if he's a bit of an engineering stereotype -- extremely methodical. He does have a sense of humor and cares for his students, but he is also so subtle that I didn't fully appreciate it until my second semester with him. |

There is no doubt that dr bonnenberger is a good teacher and if you go to class regularly you will get everything you need to know through the notes. That being said he can be really boring to have to listen to and moves at such a fast and robot like pace that most of the information is not understood. Also he is a bit awkward and hard to approach outside of class and otherwise. I prefer beigel or fourney they convey the same amount of information yet teach class in a manner that is more conversational and more involved for the students rather than writing all of the notes on the board and not giving you enough time to copy. Also besides Chang he is probably the harshest grader. On many occasions I would lose large amounts of points for simple calculation error which essentially caused me to get aetter below what I expected. If you can get a different professor, not Chang, take them instead, but if you're stick with him then it's not the end of the world |

Dr. Bonenberger is very good at teaching; he is methodical, clear, and helpful. As long as you do your work in the class and ask for help when you need it, he's a great professor. |

Great professor and really nice guy, and he wears a sick hat most of the time. He will really work with you in office hours until you understand. He definitely wants his class to do well. Exams are very fair, and grading is as well. As a lecturer, he does a lot of examples in order to make the material understandable, as well as show you how to get the right answer. Overall, definitely recommend taking him if you can. |

I have had many poor professors and only a few good ones. Han is one of the later. He is actually the best professor I think I've had in college. He is passionate and knowledgeable, and will help you if you need it. He won't give you the answer but makes you figure it out so that you understand the material. I'm planning on looking for upper level electives that he teaches in the future. |

A very good professor. He most definitely knows his stuff and is very passionate about what he teaches. Sometimes the class did get boring, but he would still teach it with rigor and like it was the most important thing in the world at the time. He told all of his students that if they ever have any questions or problems with engineering or not that they could come find him even after the semester is over and he would try to help. He said it is his job as our professor to make sure we succeed. Couldn't have asked for a more dedicated man to teach me. |

This class is pretty boring, and paying attention to this professor in lecture is hard. But he is very excited about the class and will help you in any way he can. Overall, I liked him. And I just cannot sit in a class and look at Professor Beigle, so if they are your two options I would definitely go with Han. |

Ehhhh..I'm going to be honest in that I really don't see what the big deal is with this guy. He blazes through the material with one or two examples per topic which for boneheads like me simply is not enough to get the 'A' that everyone wants, nor is it enough to learn the material sufficiently well. I did laugh my ass off all semester though, and he is highly amusing, but looking back I would have rather had someone more rigorous because I feel like I would have definetly gotten my moneys worth having not had Tom. Pros: - You can turn your all of your crap in pretty much as late as you want if you just tell a dead baby joke or make a general remark regarding the end of the human race as we know it (highly inevitable). - Is definetly sympathetic towards his students, and realizes that this university pretty much sucks ass in all aspects of teaching engineering (he went here too). - Makes classtime very quick and concise (could also be a bad thing for people like me) Cons: - Rushes through material with one or two examples and not a very thorough or memerable approach (I've already forgotten a good amount since class has let out and its only been a few weeks.) - Is late, and is a HUGE slacker which for someone like me was annoying (again...didn't feel like I got my $ or time's worth) Overall I'd say go for it. Engineering is awful here anyways, so its not like you are going to find another teacher with an actual sense of humor like him. If you are smarter than I am (I'm an idiot and I got a B) and can extrapolate a lot out of a few simple problems, then this class will be a very easy and enjoyable experience with him. If you need to be smacked in the head with a hammer to learn the material then I would definetly go with someone else who is going to have a much more thorough and in depth approach to this class. His class notes were only slightly helpful most of the time in attempting homework problems, and I found them to be very jumpy and illogical. |

Tom is easily the best professor I've ever had. He's a great guy, hilarious, very reasonable, strives to help his students however he can, and he's legitimately a good teacher. While most professors earn their teaching position simply by knowing the material (some don't even meet this qualification), Tom actually knows how to teach it as well, a skill that seems to be in strikingly short supply amongst UMD professors. |

Not particularly exciting, but he explains the material well. Also his in class test reviews consist of telling you what to write on your formula sheet. (which is about half the battle in ENES classes) |

awesome professor. he teaches what he thinks is important and is very good at explaining the concepts. exams were fairly straightforward and tended to test your understanding of the fundamentals rather than special cases. in lecture, he'll work out problems that either he made up or one from an old exam. |

The best engineering professor I have had at this university by far. I agree with all the other comments posted about him thus far: 1. Comes to late pretty much every class 2. Teaches you more in 25 minutes than you would learn in any other 50 minute class 3. Tells semi-offensive jokes that you either find hilarious or slightly alarming. 4. Cancels class whenever he isn't up for teaching that day 5. Explains the material extremely well. 6. He is extremely interested in answering any questions you have. I strongly recommend him for ENES102/220. |
William Fourney
ENES220 frakking_geek 12/31/2009 |
He teaches completely through example problems which made it difficult for me because I can't learn like that so it forced me to read and outline the book to understand how to do the problems he did during lecture. However, my only problem with him was the teaching style. He's extremely approachable and gives out his home phone number to ask him for any help at any time. Basically, the class is a bit like ENES102 all over again, if you do the homework and all the practice problems for the exam, you'll be fine. I think they're going to make all the sections a bit bigger for next semester due to budget cuts though so it'll be twice the size of a normal enes class for anyone taking it after this fall 09 semester. |

ENES220 Expecting an A Anonymous 12/23/2009 |
Dr. Bonenberger is one of the best professors I've had so far. He co-wrote the textbook, so he definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to Mechanics of Materials. However, he's also able to effectively communicate his knowledge to his students. He teaches in a very organized, linear, and methodical manner and explains every step and concept as he writes it on the board. Unlike some other mechanics professors, who show up to class late and delude their students into thinking they actually learn something in 20 minutes, Bonenberger teaches you for the full 50 minutes so that his students know the right way to solve mechanics problems, not just shortcuts you can throw away as soon as you leave ENES220. The only downside is that he actually grades how well your beam does in the competition, and he nitpicks on the design report, so make sure you check your calculations and design your beam right! Overall, if you like an all-business professor who does not waste your time and teaches you all that you need to know, then this is the guy for you. |

Great guy! He is a decent lecturer, tends to teach through example problems. He often talks about applications, and real life things that relate to the materiel. For some reason, he teaches a lot less than the other professors yet the students learn a lot more. Sometimes, the hour-long lecture is taught in as little as 20 minutes. Having him as a teacher drastically increases your chances of doing well on the midterms and finals. But he tells a lot of offensive jokes so if you're the sensitive type, avoid him. |

ENES220 Expecting an A Anonymous 10/24/2009 |
This guy is all business. He's a great teacher and does every example problem step by step. If you happen to come across the solutions to the homework you can tell they're done by him by how neat and organized they are. If you pay attention and write everything down that he does there's almost no way you don't get an A. He actually has given out extra credit. In my class he gave everyone in the class a bunch of extra credit just for everyone completing the professor reviews at the end of the semester. On the one time he cracks a joke during the semester he will immediately apologize. He doesn't like nonsense and has almost no personality. One last thing, if you're one of those people that likes Beigel, be warned, he hates the guy. So when the exam review comes around he takes a lot cheap shots. All in all, if you want to learn the material and don't need excitement in your class, pick him. |

Good teacher. Teaches everything step by step, which is really easy to follow. The 2 hour discussion period consisted of finishing that weeks material followed by doing 2-3 group problems. He was also very helpful with the problems. Homework solutions are "around". Look for them. To do well on the exams, just study the practice problems he posts up. If you can do all of them and understand those problems, you will DEFINITELY get an A or B because the exam problems are just variations of the practice problems. |

Either you like him or you hate him. hes a no BS kind of guy for problems, but a complete BS guy when it comes to doing work. he will occasionally cancel class within the first 5 minutes because he doesnt feel like teaching that day. this is great if you have other shit to do, but not so good if you want to learn and just walked all the way across campus to his class. He is willing to help out if you make an appointment to see him but dont count on him being in his office hours. his sense of humor is such that if u ask a question he will call you retarded but is clearly kidding and will proceed to answer. He doesnt teach from the book though so just write down the equations he give in class. they make things easier anyway. |

Really good teacher. Teaches in a very methodical manner which is generally easy to follow, though a bit slow at times. I personally did a crossword in class most days and still did well. And surprisingly, he gave extra credit if you were there the day before Thanksgiving or if there was a lot of class participation on the UMD Course Evals. |

Beigel is only for certain types of students. If you have trouble with Physics and ENES then he is definetly not for you. He doesn't really teach but if you are the type that can learn off one or two examples off the board and dont need every thing explained to you this is for you. He does however teach you only what you need to know and does not overload you with information. And somehow the class always seems to know exactly what problems will be on the exams. |

A great teacher. I never went to class unless there some concept I didn't understand in the homework. Beigel would then go over that type of thoroughly so it would be pretty difficult to not understand. His reviews for the tests also go over everything you would need to know. Overall Mechanics is not a hard course. You could easily just not go to class and teach it to yourself. But, if you to class you have to do very little work outside of it. |
Thomas Beigel
ENES220 Anonymous 12/04/2007 |
Beigel teaches the students how to finish the problems they have to complete for the homework and exams in order to pass the course. He teaches with the minimal amount of academic BS that you will encounter from every other professor. It's almost like he has worked in the real world as an actual practicing engineer! The lectures are straightforward and to the point: 1. Here is a concept 2. Here is a problem involving this concept 3. Here is how you solve the problem 4. next concept On the first day Beigel is very up front about his teaching style and encourages students to switch to a different section if they don't like it. If you want a professor that reads the book to you verbatim, then don't take Beigel's class. |

The good: The guy knows his stuff and if you are serious about your studies, take notes and do all your work, you will do well. The bad: He doesnt joke about anything, or talk about anything besides the class, and hes got some OCD so hes really picky on homework and tests. The ugly: Besides his gigantic glasses, he will never curve anything, gives no extra credit and takes an more delight than ive ever seen in seeing students not do well or fail tests/quizzes. Suggestion: If you take him, just do the work and dont take it too lightly. The material isnt really very tough for Statics or Mechanics but if you mess anything up, dont expect any sympathy from this guy. |
