Hosam is a great professor who teaches the class in a way that teaches you something you'll remember instead of just learning how to memorize tons of formulas the week before an exam. The exams are fair and make sense and he's a nice guy. |

"Know that things will always get better...moving on to the quiz!", If you know you know. Very great professor for this class. Don't listen to the review saying to avoid him if you want to learn from his class |

If you want to learn the material not just get a good grade, avoid him at all costs. Everything is graded for completion |

In the dark tunnel that is vibrations, Keenan shines as a beacon of hope. The homeworks for this course get very difficult as the semester goes on, so Keenan's office hours became my home, and Keenan himself became my knight in shining armor. Keenan masterfully demonstrated his prowess as a TF by helping multiple students get through the homework each week; regardless of difficulty he always found a way to pull us through. He is a fantastic TF worthy of all my praise. |

She reads off the slides at break neck pace and doesn't make an effort to make the content understandable. It's a tough class, but she makes it unnecessarily difficult for us to follow along. Her lectures are indecipherable to the point that it's hardly worth it to come to class, yet she blames us for the low attendance. |

Hosam is one of the best professors I have had at UMD so far. The structure of 361 is very straightforward and he makes it easy to follow along as long as you go to lecture. He truly cares about all of his students and their ability to succeed in the course, so he designs all homeworks, exams, and assignments to be consistent with course material and there are no extremely difficult or trick questions. His exams are very easy when compared to other sections of the course, and he only tests on material that has been explicitly covered in lecture. There is also an extra credit assignment at the end of the semester that gave up to an additional 3% in the course grade I believe. He is very responsive to emails, and tries his best to be interactive in class and learn all his students' names. I would highly recommend taking this class with Hosam, which is only offered in the fall semesters. |

In recent lectures, there have been more examples and practice problems which has been helpful. I find the lectures a little difficult to follow at times, but giving some time to do the problems ourselves develops the skills necessary for homework and exams, and doing problems by hand allows everyone to follow each step and ask questions if they do not understand. This is a hard class when taught focusing on practical applications and solving problems which to my knowledge, is different from how some other professors teach it, but if you want to gain a deep understanding of how to apply vibrations and controls to physical systems, I would recommend taking this version of the class. |

Absolutely useless for lectures, it's a self taught course completely when Yu switches off with her. |

Very tough grader. He won't give partial credit at all. He is a nice person, but his lecture is really fast-paced. |

As someone who was forced to drop the class in spring due to medical issues: Fathy is the superior teacher in regards to teaching this class. Not only is homework collaborative and graded for completion, but he was genuinely better at explaining the material. He makes a serious attempt at keeping the class engaged in the content, and rewards participation. He also provides opportunities to gain extra credit. He's an excellent professor for understanding the fundamentals, but if you're not careful it could be easy to miss out on other important information. |

Hosam Fathy really cares that his students understand the material and how it related to other things we may learn outside of his lectures. He also gave warnings about expectations for Vibes 2. Unlike some of the other people here, I really appreciate that he stresses the structure of the course and relationships between chapters, rather than rote formulas. He was fair with regrades and accomodations, but rarely should you need them. The exams we structured pretty different to home-works and class examples, wi9th very short questions worth one point each. After the first test, though, you know what to expect and old exams are made available. Also he repeats questions (not word-for-word but very similar content) quite a bit. |

Great professor, and answers questions perfectly, making class very manageable. Extremely smart and teaches the course completely from memory. Exams and curves are very fair. |

Overall this class was pretty easy. Hosam makes everything completion so you only have to worry about exams. Exams are fair, but you need to be in class to do well on them. The reason I give him three stars is because he structures the class in such a way that you learn almost nothing. I think I learned the least in his class than every other class I've taken here. There's no motivation to learn anything since all the homeworks, classworks, and quizzes are graded for completion. As long as your work isn't completely BS you'll get the credit, so obviously there's no reason to learn the concepts until 2 days before the exam, after which you forget it all. He also takes up to weeks to get back exam grades, which doesn't make much sense considering his exams are usually multiple choice. My biggest gripe with him was when he would pass around a stapler during the exam so we could attach our equation sheets to the exam. I find it really distracting when the person next to me drops a stapler in my lap mid-question and I have to fumbled with all my stuff for a full minute so hosam can get my equation sheet. Makes 0 sense why he even needs our sheets since he says we can put whatever we want on them. Like just have a stapler at the front of the room and we can do it once we finish??? Ridiculous. |

Hosam made the class relatively easy as the homework was only for completion and the exams were very similar to the practices. However, I felt his notes in class were disorganized and not always relevant to exams. I often felt like I learned the content solely from the practice exams. I appreciated that this class wasn't too much work and exams were straightforward, but I wish we did practice exams more similar to exam content. Overall, Hosam is a super nice and understanding professor and that class wasn't too much work. |

Her lectures are by far some of the worst I’ve been through. She seems very smart which leads me to believe she’s here for research not to teach. She rushes through examples and breezes past large concepts. Retaking the same class she’s done such a poor job teaching with a new professor truly gave me some clarity about just how bad of a professor she is. |

This guys knows his stuff, is very nice, and does not try to academically haze you. Office hours are very helpful to understand concepts and he prepares you very well for exams in class. Never gives too much work at one time, if you are going to take 361, take it with him. |

Impossible homework with the way she teaches. Lecture was my least favorite part of every week. Lecture slides were confusing and 60+ slides long. First class I have ever had to withdraw from. Content is definitely difficult, but she made it much harder than it needed to be. |

Professor Fathy was an unbelievable incredible professor. He was engaging, fun, and clearly explained all of the material. You need to show up and pay attention but if you do that, youll be set. I heard a lot of horror stories about the vibes class but I learned more in this class than I have in almost any of my other classes. I cannot recommend him highly enough. |

This was maybe one of the best courses I have ever taken. I learned a lot in his class. Fathy placed all his emphasis on learning the material and not on grades. He repeatedly said not to worry about your grades and focus on the content. He is very approachable and patient when explaining concepts. If he could, he would give everyone an A or B in the class. |

Hosam is one of the most caring professors at UMD. However, you have to take good lecture notes and show up to class because he doesn't record the lectures or post notes. He cared more about us learning the material for the course than trying to fail his students, and all of the exams were multiple choice, which was nice. I would 1000% take this professor again and feel like I learned the material super well |

Professor Fathy is a great lecturer. If you pay attention, you will understand the course material. However, he uses different nomenclature than the textbook, so it id difficult to reconcile lecture notes with what the textbook says. |

This class was incredibly challenging, but not for the reason of the content being overly difficult. The lectures are insanely fast paced, and you'll get one, or maybe half of an example that will be extremely easy compared to HW and exams. HW much easier than exams, so not really relevant for helping your grade. For our section, you basically got a handful of practice exam questions that might be similar to what was on the exam, but the exam would be different enough to throw you off. He refused to give practice exam solutions which made it impossible to tell if you were doing anything correctly. Harsh grader as stated, but HW was graded on completion not accuracy. Massive curve for our class so a few F averages ended up passing with minimum C- or better. Class content could be interesting but this class is so focused on derivations that I feel very little real world use is gained from this class. |
Joshua Radice
ENME361 Expecting an A- Anonymous 08/04/2022 |
Dr. Radice is an amazing teacher and I wish I could have him for my other classes. His lectures are easy to follow with tons of examples. His lecture slides are very technical and similar to the textbook, but he will switch from slides to working problems which are very thorough, neat, and detailed. His goal is to ensure we are fully understanding the concept/problem before moving on. Dr. Radice truly cares about his students and is a great guy one-on-one. He does have a good sense of humor so he likes to make jokes here and there. For homeworks, they are more challenging than the problems in lecture, but going in for help is a great way for success. For exams, he pulls one problem from homeworks, one problem from lecture, and creates a new problem. Attending lecture and reviewing example problems and homeworks are the best ways to be successful in his class. |

If you ever see him teaching this class for the upcoming semester, take his class immediately. He is genuinely one of the better professors at UMD, especially among all the mech e professors. He teaches the material really well. He will use another lecture to go over the material again if he received feedback of students not understanding the previous lecture, and the exams are fair. |

ENME361 Anonymous 05/15/2022 |
Dr. Radice is the best engineering professor at the University of Maryland. He has amazing lectures, and he absolutely gets the most out of his students. He finds a way to make dense material simple to understand and really interesting. I've been seriously slacking off this last year as I am about to graduate and will not be working in the field of engineering, however, he reinspired me to learn and enjoy doing it. If you watch all of his lectures, you will be absolutely fine. He is super funny and engaging, plus he always teaches something useful so you never leave feeling like you should've stayed in bed. Usually, I learn strictly from the books and ignore my professors, but in 361 I never had to get the book because Radice taught the material so well. He always goes way above and beyond any expectations to make sure he is adjusting his curriculum such that he can best teach his students, and I've never met a single person who hasn't said amazing things about him. Do yourself a favor and take his class!!! |

Very good professor. Explains the material well. Exams are similar to the practice exams but he's an extremely tough grader. If you make a minor mistake at the beginning of a problem and other questions depend on that answer, you will get something close to a zero on the rest of the exam. |

Talks very fast and lectures straight off of the slides. She does no examples in class. You don't stand a chance on homeworks/exams if you're relying on this teacher. |

Honestly she seems really smart but I didn't learn much from her. Her and Prof Yu traded off teaching different sections last semester. Way too theory based and even that is skimmed over too quickly. She'd go weeks without doing any in-class examples, which hit you like a brick when you saw the assigned HW. Good during office hours, but in class... nah. bonus points for agreeing to push back the first exam though |

So I took this class over the winter. Overall it is a lot of material in a short amount of time. There are 4 exams, 5 Hw's , 8 quizzes, and one take home exam. A lot of work for only 13 class sessions. Vince is tough, but he really wants us to be great engineers. Vince is concise, he clearly explains and relates all the material to real world examples. He does hold all students to a high standard, so just be prepared to suffer, but its for a good reason. I would take Vince again because I will be a better engineer for it, not because I enjoy working so hard. In short, Vince is a great professor. |

The man is the absolute best. He teaches his class how every class should be taught. He gives really hard homework problems that force you to use Matlab and other online calculators, but his tests are super straightforward and just test that you know the concepts. Also incredible in office hours and a really funny and nice man |

ENME361 Expecting an A- cheesecake 06/04/2015 |
Dr. Yu is a fairly effective teacher that really tries to help students succeed in the class. She is a very reasonable teacher and teaches from a powerpoint she uploads online. She also works through example problems on the board. She taught the material for the first midterm extremely well, but for the second midterm and finals, the material got really dense and hard to understand. Overall though, I would recommend taking Yu for 361 if you have the option to. |

Maybe I wasn't reading him right, but I had the impression that he just didn't care in the slightest for teaching. He essentially just read powerpoint slides that were taken straight from the book. He skirted around any questions asked during lecture, most often answering with "Well...it depends on the question." There were a number of pop quizzes throughout the semester, many of which boiled down to whether or not you memorized a formula from last lecture. I believe the lowest two quizzes were dropped though. |

Dr. Yu really wants you to succeed in the class, she is very approachable and a really nice person. She can get a little flustered when students can't grasp the concepts sometimes, but for the most part she does a good job explaining the concepts. Grading is very fair, the course is very well organized, she is helpful in office hours, exams are difficult but fair. Recommend her if you have a choice. |

She's a good professor. Vibrations 1 is a hard class, but she is very nice and friendly. Her exams are fair and in my opinion, alittle easier than others which is a good thing. Whatever you do, Avoid Vince Nyguen at all costs. He is the worst teacher there is, and his exams are extremely difficult. Miao Yu is pretty good, just take her |
Edward Magrab
ENME361 Expecting a W James Pritts Jr. 01/06/2012 |
Probably a really smart guy, but he just can't teach. A "tough but fair" teacher, with a little more emphasis on "tough". Actively seeks to help students through office hours but it was almost as if you had to go to office hours to actually learn something. Lectures were basically straight out of the book (that he wrote) and so nothing additional was gained by attending. If you can't make office hours you're probably screwed. Magrab relies heavily on his students possessing very strong knowledge in the class pre-reqs, which is perhaps not always the case, seeing as how this includes Dynamics and Dif-Eq. To make sure, he will quiz you for the first month of the semester on Dif-Eq. Not Vibrations...Dif-Eq. Doesn't curve. Makes it clear in the first class that he is unapologetic of students not stepping up to the plate. Not a bad attitude, but he acts like he's the only professor who really holds his students accountable, which kind of makes one feel "unworthy" Not cool. In the end, seems like just another research professor who can't be bothered with undergrads. A little over half my class, including myself, dropped within a week or so of the first test. The average of which was low enough to warrant some sort of re-test or correction opportunity (I wouldn't know, had taken the W by then). I continued to hear horror stories for the 18 brave souls who remained in the class. In a Winter course now for ENME 361, taught by Vincent Nguyen. Things that seemed impossible before are now completely reasonable. Much better experience. Don't take Magrab. |

Dr. Yu is a good vibrations teacher. Vibrations is not an easy class to teach and requires a great deal of effort (on the students half) to learn effectively. Dr. Yu's grading is very fair and she does curve. Out of all the professors who currently teach vibrations, I would choose her hand down. |

B Balachandran
ENME361 Mike Shaffer 05/17/2011 |
Balachandran is a fair professor. He wrote the book for the class, and does a decent job and conveying the course material. There are periodic quizes, weekly homeworks, 2 midterms and a final. Fortunately, all of the exams we're reasonable and straight forward compared to what I had heard from other professors. I would recommend him for ENME361 if you can take it with him. |
Miao Yu
ENME361 Expecting a C kvizzle321 04/25/2011 |
Miao Yu loves to feed on the souls of those that cannot succeed in vibrations. The class is very hard in the first place. On top of that Yu moves through the material very quickly, has unclear handwriting, and a hard to understand accent. Sometimes it seems like she wants you to fail. I suggest avoiding Yu if possible. |
