I know the class is pointless and I want to cut her some slack, but Dr. Johnson makes this class really irritating. She's weirdly passive-aggressive when interacting with students. Completing assignments for her just consists of creating hollow, pointless walls of text that happens to line up with whatever sociopolitical views or platitudes about community building she was droning on about that day. Lenient grader, though I doubt she reads submissions anyways.

Although the course is super boring, professor Riley makes it somewhat interesting by including her comedy into it. She is super kind and understanding!

Amazing Professor. This class prepares you for college life! Be ready to embark on well-planned workshops from your trusty PAL and apply them yourself.

Not too many things to say that the first reviewer hasn't mentioned. Dr. Johnson takes this class way too seriously and makes this "class" a way more annoying experience than it should be. There are worse things I could say, but I will opt to just tell you to try to find a different professor if you want to take this pretty useless class.

You don't get to choose your HNUH100 professor, but it's a good thing if you get her: Pros: - Friendly & welcoming - Lenient, easy grader (not that many hard assignments to begin with) - Does a much job neutrally delivering a heavily politicized curriculum than other professors do

The class is a waste of time and Dr. McBryde knows that we're all busy. She's a super chill and easy grader, so don't skip the class and you'll be fine.

The class itself is pretty easy, but I feel like Dr. Johnson tries a lot to make a 1 credit gateway course seem important. She can be very picky with grading and takes off points for minimal mistakes so make sure to try and follow exactly what the rubric says. It can also be easy to forget about the participation assignments, don't forget to do those because the more you miss them the more of an impact it has on your grade than you may think. Besides teaching/grading, she genuinely cares for her students and is a very approachable and sweet person.

Amazing professor who really cares about his students. HNUH100 isn't the most exciting class but he made it bearable.

If you ignore the fact that the class itself is a complete waste of time, she does attempt to make it more interesting by giving her thoughts here and there. Overall, very chill and easy grader, so it's pretty much a guaranteed A as long as you show up.

Dr. Johnson cares too much about a 1 credit class that could be an email. She can be condescending if you don't do exactly what she wants, the way she wants it. This is not to say that following the rules and assignments is the issue, it's more so the way she facilitates discussion. She makes it appear she wants open opinion however, after a while it is clear that she is looking for one specific answer. While this could be understandable in a class where this is one clear right answer, however Gateway is supposed to encourage free thinking and discussion on many deferent, often personal topics. While this next issue may be no fault of her own, as she may just be following the curriculum she was given, it often appears as she has only just learned a topic that she is lecturing on, nay it seems as if she has just preformed a 5 second simple google search on the topic 10 minutes prior to the class, while also presenting herself as an all-knowing expert. I'm sure she is a lovely person outside of lecture, however she has made this class absolutely insufferable.

Overall a very nice professor. HNUH100 is basically a waste of time, but Dr. McBryde is a pretty good teacher. Can't really complain I guess.

I had them for HNUH100, and I HATED their class. They are passive-aggressive and hypocritical. They would constantly complain about how late our class was, but if we said something or if we looked tired they would go on a rant about how we were honors students, so we should be better. They demeaned us and made comments about how we were in college now and needed to act more maturely when they would constantly go on weird rants. They also added extra assignments to the HNUH100 curriculum after complaining about the original curriculum, and saying they had no control over what we were taught. They took grading for a one-credit course way too seriously. We had an assignment to make an online portfolio. They gave absolutely 0 directions, and the average class score was 15/25 because people didn't include enough projects, but in class, she never said that we had to include projects, and there was nothing on the rubric either. Avoid their class at all costs!!

This class is such a waste of time and a complete joke, but Riva makes it somewhat enjoyable. She accepts a lot of feedback and is willing to go to her bosses about it to make the program better. She is a very sweet and genuine person and a lot of her presentations are about animals, which just make the class a lot better.

In the 45 minutes or so that she was co-teaching my section, she talked about how the world map (the Mercator projection, though I'm not sure she knew that there are other projections) was essentially racist and colonialist because Europe appears larger than it really is relative to Africa. The Mercator projection is obtained by placing a cylinder around a globe with a light in it, and taking the shadow that it projects onto the cylinder. It preserves angles well, and that's why it's the most common projection. Very racist. There are at least two other reasons the map could be considered colonialist--the map is Europe-centric, of course--but she immediately went to the one thing that made no sense. Why was she talking about this in a HNUH100 section, you may ask? I haven't a clue. "Don't you love it when your white cis hetero friends stick up for you?" Umm, sure, generally speaking I like it when anybody sticks up for me. Weird question. I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt and give her 3 stars instead of 1, considering that I didn't actually have her section. My friend did, and he did not like it.

Riva is an amazing, down-to-earth professor who deserves to be teaching more worthwhile courses than HNUH100. Regardless, she is absolutely hilarious, super engaging, not afraid to speak her mind, and all around charismatic. She made the pointless course enjoyable to an extent. She's a little crazy, but that contributes very well to her personality, and I'm sure she'd consider it a compliment to be called crazy.

HNUH 100 is a waste of a class, but this fish-loving, stand-up comedian of a professor makes it a little better. Dr. Riley is an understanding and interesting professor and I would recommend taking her for this course. I do think the canvas layout for the course is terribly confusing, but that's not her fault!

Great professor, really cares about student health, both mental and physical. Did a good job teaching the material he was given, even though it wasn't his expertise.

If you have to take her for Gateway seminar, you might as well drop UH. She takes the garbage curriculum very seriously and I have never met anyone as passive aggressive. She doesn't respond to canvas comments. I had her in the evening and she constantly complained about the timing of the class, saying she wanted to go home. I said something similar in an assignment, and received a zero and had to meet with her. In the meeting she went off about how I need to have more respect for the course. For reference, there was an assignment where we watched a documentary on Renaissance era nude paintings, posted photos of ourselves on a discussion board, and had to analyze 2 of our classmates photos. It was a very strange assignment and from what I know, other Gateway instructors didn't assign it to their sections.

Dr. Jiao is an awesome guy. He truly cares about the mental health of his students and tries really hard to show you that he is there for you as a first-year guide. At the end of the day, HNUH100 is a course that isn't very engaging, but his unique perspectives made it worth it to go to class. I hope he builds a really interesting cluster course!

Dr. Jiao is such a sweet human. HNUH100 was a pretty useless class, but Dr. Jiao had no control of the course material and did his best to make the class interesting. He clearly cares about his students, and I know he'll design a really great cluster course or Theory and Practice Track bundle that will really cater to his students' needs.

Dr. Kat is for the most part nice; however, they can be extremely passive aggressive at times. Moreover, they were not extremely sympathetic to circumstances of the class: they are teaching HNUH100- a 1 credit course-, and expected us to put in the same amount energy that we would for a major-related course. It also seemed for that they didn't understand that we take like 5 other classes. While they can be nice, I personally don't know if I would recommend taking class with them. Maybe if you like theatre and have more in common with them then yes.

Veronica straight-up went awol for the last month of class and stopped showing up. She's crazy. If you want a professor who will keep things interesting, take her for sure. She almost decapitated someone with a bag of skittles. Went on a rant abt how we should all convert to socialism. The class was a waste of time but she was always hilarious. Definitely not organized; she forgot to assign out final project so she just didn't grade it.

This professor was not very communicative. I can't say much about her teaching ability because the lessons we 'learned' in this class were mostly basic information about how to be professional which is not something that was necessary for me to be taught in my opinion. I don't think this is a class I would willingly take if I had a choice and the professor did not help.

This is a once credit class and while it is very easy she made it harder than it needed to be. This professor had no idea what was going on and always relied on our PAL to answer questions. One time she did not show up to class and did not let anyone know. Her "lectures" only last about 30min so when she's done talking just ask to leave and she will let you. Her emails were hard to follow as well as passive-aggressive and a couple assignments were hard to find. She just seems to be a strange person overall. The last month of class she canceled or had us over Zoom. This was nice but not what a professor should do. While HNUH100 was fine with her I could not imagine taking a difficult class with this Professor.

Professor McReynolds made HNUH100 an excellent experience. She sends weekly announcements to ensure that her students know what they have to get done for the week, and is lenient on due dates. She has given me useful advice such as when to send a reminder email. Lastly, her classes will most definitely be enjoyable as she often adds funny comments based on her own experiences. Overall, Professor McReynolds has clear expectations and is quite lenient and considerate.
