As the other reviews say, the exams are impossible. I went to every lecture and didn’t gain much, and the lectures didn’t help me perform well on the exams. I got a 60% on the midterm and a 50% on the final, yet I studied way more for the final exam. The questions are very in depth and not related to what we went over in class at all. The curve is the only saving grace to this class. |

Dr. Boyd, while possessing a charming and friendly demeanor, teaches a course in which it is impossible to learn. His lectures are meandering and difficult to follow, and his examinations and course materials have little to do with actual lecture content. In fact, his examinations differ so far from the assigned textbooks, that he will ask questions relating to other chapters that we were not being tested on, or even material that was never covered in lecture OR the textbook at all! You will do extremely poorly on his exams. However, since literally everyone else does just as badly, you will be granted a generous curve. You will not be able to properly gauge how much you learned because the class average hovers around a 55%. If you want to actually learn, you should not take his course. |

Makes lectures interesting and is charismatic. Not the easiest class to get a good grade in but he makes it worth it to come to class and listen. |

He seems like a really nice person but a terrible teacher. This class is really poorly organized. He regularly gives assignments that you complete with a group and he grades them comparative to other groups in your class. No clear rubric is provided either so you don't know what you are losing points for. The lectures do not match up with the exams or the assignments. The average exam grades are consistently 50-60% but he curves it which is nice. No matter how hard you study though, there is no way that you will get an A or B on the exam. This class was very frustrating and I would recommend taking it with a different professor if possible. |

Interesting guy but terrible professor. First off his exams have nothing to do with the textbook or the lectures so it is impossible to study or prepare. He references specific companies than were never discussed whatsoever and asks in depth questions on the exams. He gives a curve but it is impossible to know what grade you will receive until he releases the final grades after the year is over. |

Weekly mini group projects that don't relate to the lectures. Exams that don't reflect what he teaches in class, nor do they cover the chapters we are told to study. He says to expect a curve, but we have no clue where final grades will end up. |

He's a good guy but not the best teacher. Don't think you know anything going into his exams. The average was around 55% for each exam and the highest grade for each was 80%. He curves the exams by 20-25% each time but doesn't update the grades until the end so you have no idea what your grade is. |

He is funny and his classes are pretty entertaining. His exams are quite difficult. I wish he taught to the exam a little bit more. He does curve the exams though. |

A very enjoyable professor who can relate any concept to life and make it understandable. The exams do not feel as though they are related to the content in class but I retained a lot of concepts and terms from class. |

Boyd is a great guy. He enjoys what he does and is to date my favorite professor in the Smith School. His tests are hard. He has a generous curve for them. |

He's a great guy and very enthusiastic about what he teaches. I'll say this- pay attention in lecture because his exam questions come from lecture and the textbook. Speaking of the exams, they are not solely definition based questions. A lot of the questions are application. Thank goodness for his very generous curves. Turned a D into a B. |

Good professor and nice guy. His lectures are awesome and he ties in real world examples for everything he teaches. Makes this a fun class and i guarantee you will never be bored in his class. Ofcourse, just as everyone mentioned his tests are impossible. You have to read the book to do decent but even that doesn't guarantee you an A. Most people who get A's generally get lucky with the curve in their favor. Even though his tests are hard, I would recommend taking him. You will most likely end up with a B but honestly you will learn alot about business in his class. |

DO NOT TAKE BOYD - HIS TESTS ARE CONFUSING, CONVOLUTED, AND AMBIGUOUS. That's basically what you need to know. I agree with everyone when they say he is an awesome guy, fun person to get to know, and will definitely try and help you but he just does not know how to make tests. I would highly recommend taking Letkoff or whoever else is teaching BMGT350 because in the end, your grade does matter. The class just becomes frustrating because the material isn't hard, his tests just don't ask about the material. I'm not mad or bitter that I took his class, but for your sake and your GPA, I would suggest you take someone else. |

Boyd is awesome. His lectures are really entertaining and actually enjoyable. The downside is that his tests do have a lot of random questions out of nowhere, but the curves are huge to make up for it. I got As on the first two tests. You just need to carefully read the book and review lecture notes, and use your best guessing skills on all the random questions. You need to go to his lectures, but that's not an issue because they are interesting. Whats also great about his class is that he has no annoying papers or group projects. I definitely recommend him. |

His lectures are really fun, but he's a terrible professor. He can't teach and loves to talk about himself throughout the class. His lectures don't tie into what's going to be on the test. His test are completely random. Half the material comes from the book and hte other half is complete BS that we have never covered in class. If you want to get an A in the course you really have to read the textbook well and beat the curve. His curves are ridicioulos. Even if you fail the exam you end up with a B-. Worst class ever because you legit have to put more effort into it to get an A than any other class. |

Professor Boyd is a great lecturer. He's funny, will keep you engaged and you'll never be bored! However, when it comes to his exams he has like half of the materials out of nowhere. No matter how much you study the book, do the online quizzes, it'll never help you. If you end up with an A it's pure luck. My advise don't study too hard for this class. No matter how hard you study there is no guarantees for an A. However if your target is a B don't even bother to study since you'll never fail his class and get a B anyway-thanks to his gigantic curve. |

Professor Boyd is an excellent lecturer. He is concise, interesting, and always has relevant real world examples. With that being said, I am still not sure where some of the exam questions came from. The exams have about 50% information from the book, 15% from lectures, and 35% from a random source nobody has discovered yet. They are curved steeply so this pretty much makes up for it. I kind of like this because you don't have to study much for the exams. |

Professor Boyd is the best lecturer I have had so far in the business school. He knows how to captivate the attention of the class and makes his lectures interesting. As far as the tests, don't get too freaked out by all of these comments on here. Just study the chapters in the book! Lecture is just part of what he tests you on. Yes, his tests involve some application of the material, but it really prepares you for real world marketing situations. If you want to be a marketing major you should take 350 with Boyd! He also tests you at the end of the semester on "marketing jargon." So you basically have a vocabulary test circa 9th grade in a college level class. However, reviewing words like "surmise" and "obviate" isn't all too bad in the realm of preparing us for mature business conversation. Overall, I highly recommend Professor Boyd for BMGT 350. He really knows his stuff and keeps class interesting. I'm pretty sure attendance is taken throughout all sections of this class, so why not have a professor who's interesting? Also, everyone is basically guaranteed a B. I got an A on my first test and a B on my second, so only time will tell how I do after the vocab test and final. Regardless, I'm going to get at least a B. |

He's no doubt a great lecturer. Only con is that his exams are unfair, which makes this class not worth putting an effort in. One reviewer said that to do well on the exams, you must guess how Boyd would analyze a situation. I agree completely. This is how I did on the exams: Exam 1 - studied somewhat, ended up getting a high B Exam 2 - studied a lot, did worse than the first exam with a B- Exam 3 - decided to test this guy's test. didn't study at all. I legitimately knew answers to 5 questions out of 50 on the exam. I guessed the other 45. I got a B on this exam. Conclusion: Whether you study or not, you'll probably end up with a B in this class, so my recommendation is don't study. In fact, save your money and don't buy the book because you'll get a B whether you read it or not. |

Extremely amiable guy. Very funny and really keeps your attention. Lectures are fun and interesting, though can sometimes seem irrelevant. When looking at ourumd.com before taking the class, i said that i would be one of the 17% or whatever to get an A. I was wrong. Though, i'm not sure of my final grade yet, i'm assuming its going to be in the B+ range. Getting an A is attributed to one thing only - luck. Honestly I put in at least twenty some hours before each test studying and it yielded no results. For the people who did really well, honestly it is luck. not to put any of them down. So if you're one of those people who is good at guessing on tests and prepares a lot, you might pull it off. By the third test, the best way to study for me was reading each chapter (not outlining), then reading the summaries in the back, then taking the online quiz for the chapter, and then going over the lecture notes from that date pertaining to the chapter. I don't know if the third test was easier or what, but i felt a whole lot more confident from that method of preparing. |

Boyd is an extremely interesting lecturer, and is very lively for an early morning lecturer! His exams ARE from the lectures and book respectively, but if you miss lectures you can get an A just by reading the book. The book is also extremely helpful in that it has online practice quizzes. Seriously, the reason people are convinced it is impossible to get an A in this course is because they hear it so much and it gets into their heads! There is no reason a student cannot get an A in this course if they make an effort. |

Most interesting lecturer I had this semester. However, this guy tests on NOTHING he lectures about. Some of the information on the tests is from the book but the vast majority isn't from the book. I don't know where the hell he comes up with his test questions, but they suck ass. Everyone fails the tests and he curves everyone up to a B. It's stupid. It seems like the guy likes to see us fail. |

Getting an A seems unrealistic. He's a great lecturer, but the material on the exam is based on the book, not his lectures nor his power points. Pick Van Winter as yor TA, he's the best. Just read the book, or don't read, you'll probably get a B no matter how hard you study. 3 exams, all multiple choice, 1 paper, 1 true-false reading quiz, discussion attendance, and experiment participation. Overall not pleased because studying hard isn't rewarded; i got a B in his class. I found out later that i was 0.4% away from an A. Sad. |

This is the most frustrating course I have taken so far at the business school. His lectures are really interesting and make marketing seemed fun and then he hits you with the first exam. It had nothing to do with the interesting things in lecture; instead, it was mostly from the book and partially from who knows where. They are multiple choice and most questions are "application" questions, which basically mean how good are you at guessing how Professor Boyd would analyze a situation. The terms are annoying because there are a ton of them and a lot have very similar meanings. The second and third exam aren't much better, they did seem to incorporate more from the lecture but that doesn't help because after the first one you're not expecting lecture material to be on it. The true/false quiz on the reading assignments is tough too because some of the questions were very specific and hard to remember after reading like 10 articles. Hard to figure out what your grades are because everyone does so bad that it all depends on the curve. |

Boyd gives awesome lectures; one of my favorite classes ever to go to. His lectures are short and sweet, he always ties in the most random examples either from his own life or things like movies and tv shows. He keeps the class interesting and entertaining. However, the only downside is that the exams are really hard. he lectures about basic concepts from the book, but the exam are all application questions. and there's always random questions that have nothing to do with anything we learned. Thankfully there is a huge curve. |

He is a really good professor and his lectures are really interesting. However, as mentioned by many others, his exams are very difficult unless you are good at memorizing 100s of useless terms. Grading for the marketing paper was ridiculous since he didn't provide us with any specific guidelines. I would suggest taking this during winter or summer, or at a community college if the credit transfers. |

Get Bonavia as your TA! She's fantastic. Really helpful, too. On Boyd - He's a great professor. Lecture is really interesting, and he never keeps us longer than an hour. Exams are tough but not impossible if you study hard - both lecture and textbook, I'd recommend. Go to class! He doesn't post his slides online, and the information that he goes over during lecture WILL be found on the test. Theres a paper in the class - but nothing aggregious, just 5 pages and your TA will go through it with you step by step. You DO have to attend discussion, but its fairly painless (assuming you don't get an early one). Readings for the class are interesting, and required for a reading quiz at the end of the semester. Good class, really!! |

Mr. Boyd is a really nice and funny guy. His lectures were always interesting and enjoyable to go to, but some of his examples didn't really help us understand anything. However, his tests were mainly straight from the book (his lectures basically reinforce what the book say). For the quiz on the readings at the end, listen to what your TAs say about past years because he reuses the same questions. I ended up getting an A in the class. I read the each of the chapters 2-3 times before each test and did well. An A on the tests was about 82%. |

I took this course in Fall of 2006: Strengths Dr. Boyd is a very funny guy and wants his students to do well. Made lectures enjoyable and easy to go to even at 9:30AM. Knows marketing well. Definitely recommend going to lectures as it reinforces what you are going to read and he provides good examples and it makes reading the textbook easier. But do read the textbook too as the tests are more heavily based on the book. But you're doing yourself no good by skipping lectures. Also I've heard that he eliminated the group paper and made the project and made it an individual project which is definitely better as you never know who you'll get put with in a large class. Drawbacks His tests are very challenging. He curves on a floating curve. You really have to read the book well and think about the material. It's hard to get an A though easy to get a B. I squeaked by with an A-. The first exam is the easiest and if you manage to get an A on it, it definitely increases your chances of getting an A in the class. About 80% get B's and 18% A's. My TA was not very good as she couldn't get people to participate and didn't really seem in control. |
