Advanced Topics in Civil Engineering; Highway Safety Fundamentals

This is a graduate level course for Transportation/Highway Engineers that are planning to expand their working capacity to the highway safety field. With the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) published by AASHTO (2010 and 2014), there are more than ever before opportunities available in highway safety in both State DOTs and consultant companies. This course introduces the fundamental highway safety concepts, introduces crash characteristics, crash data properties and major modeling methods used in highway safety, and familiarizes the students to the IHSDM software and helps them to conduct safety evaluation by using this software. In general, it expands the students' capabilities in handling highway safety projects.
